Review Summary

Brasserie Bernard is widely regarded as a quintessential Parisian-style bistro in Montreal, celebrated for its sophisticated atmosphere, elegant decor, and generally consistent French cuisine. Many patrons praise standout dishes such as the duck confit, steak frites, veal ravioli, and fresh oysters, often noting that the warm and professional service enhances the overall experience. While the restaurant is a favorite for special occasions and neighborhood dining, recent feedback indicates some inconsistencies regarding service speed, noise levels, and plate presentation. Additionally, while many appreciate the quality, some diners have expressed concerns regarding pricing, portion sizes, and occasional lapses in food preparation, suggesting that the experience can vary depending on the visit.

I must say Bernard Street is going through a small renovation as to some of the restaurants previously there. The one thing I can comfortably say, Brasserie Bernard is still heads above all. I waited to post because we were there twice during a 7 day period. First lets start with the really nice French bistro vibe. The surprise for first my friends & I was a super cute & ultra friendly server Marco. Warm, inviting & honest when asked about suggestions first about wine & then about food. He really made our night. Keep him as you have a professional jewel.
The food is just consistently solid & delicious. Not easy every time.
We had the beef tartare with truffle. My girlfriend who has eaten all over the world has deemed it her favorite tartare. I would agree. We shared the main size as as starter. We could have had more. Incredibly good.
She had the veal ravioli. loved every bite. I had the duck confit.Amazing. Our friends had the salmon tartare to start. Mains were the mussels in the red marinara sauce. As well the steak frites. Happy smiles all around. Great good makes it easy. No room for dessert. When so many restaurants are vying for patrons these guys deserve it. Polished maitre D & of course Marco. He just made this experience just delightful. A must try... Thanks BB

The food was terrible - have no idea why this restaurant can have such a high rating in Google Maps. The worst restaurant I have ever tried. The chicken was so salty that I was afraid I would get kidney issue after the whole plate. The steak was so bad that there was crust, overcooked & very chewy. The oysters were very small - even including the shell, they were all smaller than my palm.

For sure not recommend this restaurant & for sure won't visit again. Wasting time, wasting money & ruin the day

The dessert serving could be faster, or the servers should mention how long it takes.
I ordered the lemon tart & it took 25 minutes after my meal.
Otherwise delicious.

We had a great lunch & a good time at the brasserie Bernard. Our waiter gave us excellent service. The mussels were a big portion & the wine proposed by the waiter was very good. Would recommend this restaurant.

Had a wonderful evening Saturday at BB. I agree with other reviewers who say they feel they've stepped into a real Parisian establishment. You do feel you are entering another world & time. It is both an exciting & relaxing experience.

I was with 6 friends & it was the first time for all of us. Everyone was very satisfied & happy with their meals. I had the Dore (fish lightly fried in pan) & it was prepared well. I think they could be a bit more generous with the celeriac puree; green beans were perfectly cooked. Very nice if you want a very light meal. Others at the table had the duck confit; chicken; a salad; mussels & steak frites. I think the steak was the winner. The fries looked just like the photos on google reviews site so if you like your fries dark (indicating over cooked or reused oil) then you might forgo all dishes with fries or ask for a salad I would have wanted to order the fish & chips but was worried about the fries so that's why I didn't. However those who did have the fries ate them all up with no complaints.

They were generous with the time. We arrived at 5 pm & told us we had the table until 9 pm! We had tickets to concert across the street so only stayed until about 7:30 but that was nice to have no pressure.

Wait staff are all very nice, attentive & efficient. One of the best services I've had. I would say second only to Mon Lapin. One thing I felt the plate server put the dishes very close to the edge of the table so that each time part of the plate was sitting beyond the table. To be fair I think the tables are too narrow so it's hard if you have a lot of drinks/glasses to fit the plates. But I did notice it & was a bit disturbed by it.

It would be nice if they provided a basket of bread. They don't do that automatically but I saw another table get it. So don't know if they forgot about it or you have to request & pay. For instance the person with the mussels could have used the bread to sop up some of that nice sauce.

But they have cloth napkins which is so nice & luxurious.

BTW the person who ordered the Mussels wanted the marinara & got the leek & cheese. She didn't want to send it back & still enjoyed it.

All the desserts looked great. The Pavlova looked like a piece of art. I had the Profiteroles & they were tasty. Nice chocolate sauce with ice cream. Very generous portion. One person said her creme brulee wasn't warm but the other person who had it said it was fine.

The decaf coffee was so so. They don't provide cream/sugar so you have to ask. People who had the house wine enjoyed it.

Washrooms are nice (individual rooms) with hot water! So often nowadays you only get cold water.

All in all there are a lot of nice touches at BB. BB haven't sacrificed service or quality (with a few minor caveats) like so many restaurants have done these days. It's a relief to know restaurants of this calibre are still around.
