Bar St-Denis draws largely glowing feedback for its vibrant atmosphere, open kitchen energy, and creative tasting menu that often highlights seafood and bold, well balanced flavors along with a strong wine program. Many diners describe friendly, attentive service that enhances the evening, though a number note occasional lapses in attention, pacing, or value, and some dishes feel underseasoned or overpriced given portion size. Standout dishes like razor clams, scallops, labneh, and duck appear frequently, while some meals praise the roominess of the venue and the lively bar scene, and others mention a bright early evening lighting that can feel a bit stark for a first date. The tasting menu is repeatedly a highlight, with inventive combinations and strong pairings, yet a few visits recall missteps where certain ingredients overwhelm others. Overall, Bar St-Denis is seen as a top Montreal dining option, celebrated for quality, hospitality, and a sophisticated yet approachable vibe, while some reviews remind that price to quantity value can be uneven.
Pour notre anniversaire de 1 an nous avons pris le menu surprise & un gros gros wow nous avons manger au bar & la barmaid qui nous a servie etait ultra sympathique
Really enjoyed my visit here. The ambiance is lovely, & I loved the open-concept kitchen-it adds a lot of energy to the space. One thing to note though: the lighting is very bright earlier in the evening, so personally I wouldn't pick this spot for a first date (unless you're going for fully-lit, no-mystery vibes).
A heads-up for anyone booking: we were told that with a reservation, you're expected to order at least two plates per person. The portions are smaller & designed for sharing, so it makes sense, but it's definitely good to know going in.
Food-wise, highlights were the razor clams & tabbouleh-both tasted super fresh & vibrant. The labneh was great too, & the bread that came with it was good, but we definitely needed more bread to match the labneh-to-bread ratio. We also ordered the fries, which were a really generous portion, & the duck, which was delicious (slightly on the salty side) but worked really well with the mushrooms. We finished with a couple seafood pasta dishes-light overall, but the seafood really shone.
Overall, the price-to-quality ratio feels solid, & we had a great time trying a bunch of dishes.
Would recommend if you want to try something new!

Went there tonight with friends & the service was the slowest I ever experienced. We had to fill our own glasses of wine, no bucket of ice, & had to ask for more water at least 3 times during the night.
The food was bland at best & way overpriced for the lack of flavor & creativity from the cooks.
Will never go back & would definitely never recommend this place to anyone.
For the second year in a row, we spent thanksgiving in Montreal. For the second year in a row, we celebrated at @barstdenis. & for the second year in a row, we had an absolutely wonderful meal. Bar St Denis is one of those places where the joy & warmth of those cooking & serving the food is both apparent & contagious. True hospitality can't be faked, & they have it in spades. Bravo.
Oh, & the food is SPECTACULAR - thoughtful, playful, referential without being unoriginal.
On aime beaucoup.
We had the menu from November 2025, & it was underwhelming. Scallop crudo, matsutake, beef tartare & monkfish. The natural flavors of the matsutake, raw beef & monkfish were overwhelmed by other very strong flavors. Beef tartare with white anchovies just tasted like anchovy flavored paste. Monkfish tasted like bacon flavored flakes. Not particularly bold or interesting combinations & they really compromised/muddled the quality of the main premium ingredients by adding so much other stuff. All of the dishes had components that were wholly unnecessary or actually made the overall dish worse. Service was great & it's nice to see an open kitchen. Not anything horrible taste wise, but did not live up to its price point & reputation.

Delicious food. My friends had the tasting menu but since I don't eat shellfish or pork I went a-la-cart. 4 dishes were plenty.
The leeks, tomatoes & tuna were amazing.

Let's start by saying we had a really nice evening & enjoyed our food. The server was friendly, answered our questions & contributed to a good atmosphere. We had a disappointing dinner the night before at a different tasting restaurant & when we saw that the menu was different than what was online, we became concerned. We started with three dishes, & each was a pleasant surprise. We flet they were all unique takes on traditional dishes. The Sturgeon & Beet plate was very mild in flavor, but it worked. It reminded us of grandparents eating borsh. The Gnochetti Sardi was our favorite, with a feel of mac & cheese with sliced, cripy lobster mushroom as the crunch. That worked so well. & the Onion Tart, like French Onion Soup, had a crisp crust with lots of flavor. I wish we had tried the Razor Clams though. But that is for next time.
Bar St. Denis presents a remarkable tasting menu experience. Each dish is carefully prepared, highlighting vibrant flavors & seasonal ingredients. The attentive service & the effortlessly elegant atmosphere contribute to a refined yet comfortable dining environment. This restaurant is highly recommended for a sophisticated dining experience in Montreal. The stuffed morel mushrooms were truly exceptional, offering a delightful explosion of well-balanced flavors upon the first bite. While the lamb was unfortunately overcooked & somewhat chewy, the remaining aspects of the meal were outstanding. The staff demonstrated excellent knowledge of the menu, & we received commendable service. Our compliments to the chef.
Made a reservation for two & had an incredible experience. The service was amazing-everyone was attentive, kind, & worked together seamlessly. True'teamwork makes the dream work' vibes, & I loved it.
The food was absolutely delicious. We tried the cucumber, zucchini, razor clams, smoked sturgeon, pork, & sausage. For the cucumber & zucchini, I'd personally recommend choosing one or the other since the flavors were quite similar. The smoked sturgeon was a standout-never had it before, & it surprisingly tasted like ham.
Lovely meal. Spacing for dishes was a bit weird, we ordered 4 dishes from the cold section & fries. The asparagus & fries came last with about 15-20 minutes after the 3 other cold dishes. If I'm ordering fries I'd want to eat them through out my meal.
Baked Alaska was so so..not worth the price & a bit too sweet. My mom was also in the bathroom but they didn't wait to bring it out, for an ice cream dessert & a place with this price tag I expected a bit more tact. Not a big deal though!
Scallops, razor clams, & tomato were all amazing! Would come back overall.
