Quelques plats très réussis (taco de ribeye, taco de crevettes nordiques) & manifestement un souci d'authenticité en cuisine, même si d'autres propositions s'avèrent moins épatantes (plat de porc effiloché & plat de maquereau assez communs). Un service aussi faisant des efforts pour nous faire passer une belle soirée. Mais le décalage entre des prix élevés & la taille réduite des portions, pour une cuisine qui reste somme toute assez simple, constitue une source de déception majeure. La liste des cocktails & des vins est aussi vraiment très courte, avec seulement deux vins au verre (natures de surcroît, donc pas vraiment une option pour ceux qui aiment des vins plus structurés & moins oxydés). Finalement, salle excessivement bruyante.
Bref, sentiment d'avoir été un peu pris pour un pigeon. Mais il y a manifestement une clientèle pour cela, si on en juge les commentaires élogieux.
C'est la troisième fois que je visite cet établissement, principalement pour l'authenticité de sa cuisine. Malheureusement, lors de mes deux dernières visites, j'ai été déçu par l'expérience globale.
Nous étions installés sur la terrasse avant & la table était très instable. Personne ne nous a apporté de serviettes ni même un verre d'eau. Les portions sont assez petites & les prix me semblent excessifs par rapport à l'expérience offerte.
Je comprends qu'il s'agit d'un restaurant mettant de l'avant une cuisine authentique & de qualité, mais les prix ne reflètent pas le niveau de service ni les portions servies.
J'ai commandé une tetela qui était froide & dont la saveur de cannelle n'avait, selon moi, pas sa place dans ce plat. Quant à la cochinita pibil, la portion était si petite qu'elle permettait à peine de garnir deux tacos, alors qu'on pourrait s'attendre à une quantité plus généreuse compte tenu du prix.
C'est dommage, car le potentiel est là & la cuisine demeure intéressante, mais plusieurs aspects mériteraient d'être améliorés afin que l'expérience soit à la hauteur des attentes.

Loved my experience at Bar Luz! The food was so good & full of flavor, one of the best tacos ive tried & the vibe was amazing. The owner is super nice & share with us his story of opening the store. The staff were super kind & welcoming, which made it even better. I'll definitely be back!
We discovered Bar Luz since we had reserved at Alma for our anniversary, but they were temporarily closed, so they suggested we rebook at their little sister restaurant right next door (same chef & kitchen). While we were disappointed that we didn't get the chance to try Alma, Bar Luz was a very charming (albeit more casual) experience & we are happy we got to try it.
This restaurant places a lot of importance on using traditional methods & ingredients. The corn & peppers are imported, & the corn flour is freshly milled every morning. All tortillas are individually rolled, pressed & cooked to order. We appreciated that our waiter took the time to explain the process to us (service overall was really excellent).
In terms of food, everything was exceptional! We asked for a chef's choice & the menu they put together for us was well balanced, fresh, innovative & flavourful. We especially loved the scallop tostada (a work of art!) & cochinita pibil tacos, but everything we had was delicious & we had no complaints about anything we ate. The guajillo shrimps were grilled perfectly & incredibly juicy; the taco del dia (pork carnitas) melted in our mouths; tacos dorado (baja style) were light & crispy, & the sweet potato salad puree was creamy with a lovely smoky spice. For drinks we had mezcalitas & palomas & both of these were great as well.
The atmosphere in the restaurant (on a Wednesday evening) was relaxed & intimate. We were seated at the bar & enjoyed speaking with our waiter, who was clearly very passionate about his work & was very attentive throughout the evening.
In the summer on weekends, the restaurant apparently has alleyway parties with food on the grill & music. We are looking forward to coming back to try this out.
