Bar Luz is a fonda fina — an intimate and elevated expression of traditional Mexican cuisine inspired by the everyday eateries of Mexico. It is the latest project from Chef Juan Lopez and the team behind Alma, the restaurant in Montreal’s Outremont neighborhood widely regarded for redefining Mexican cuisine in Canada. Located right next door, Bar Luz was created by Sommelier Lindsay Brennan and Chef Juan Lopez Luna.
Rooted in memory, migration, and the deep flavors of family and conviviality, Bar Luz offers a heartfelt tribute to the culinary traditions and the incredible women that shaped Juan’s upbringing.
Bar Luz celebrates alta cocina mexicana through heirloom corn, hand-pressed tortillas, and dishes inspired by the matriarchs of Juan’s family, reimagined with Quebec’s seasonal bounty.
Designed by Lindsay and Juan in collaboration with Latino-Montreal creatives, the space channels the energy of Mexico City’s modern design — bold, refined, and rooted in place.
Bar Luz delivers an exceptional Mexican dining experience rooted in traditional methods and fresh ingredients, with corn and peppers imported and tortillas rolled and cooked to order, creating dishes that are flavorful, balanced and bold. Standout plates include the scallop tostada and cochinita pibil tacos, while the guajillo shrimp, pork carnitas, and tacos dorado baja style arrive juicy and satisfying, complemented by a creamy, smoky sweet potato salad. Drinks such as mezcalitas and palomas pair perfectly with the menu, and the overall atmosphere is relaxed and intimate. Service is warm and attentive, with staff and the team clearly passionate about the food and the story behind the restaurant. The experience is described as one of the best Mexican bar restaurant experiences with great decor, vibe and presentation, and guests look forward to returning.
Merci

Wonderful experience Mexican food elevated to another level! Presentation, very pretty. Service was great with a explanation of the restaurant & food ( first time at this restaurant). Drinks very good. Trendy place!
I love this place. The food was genuinely amazing & each bite was truly enjoyable!
The wine selection is also very compelling & the mezcalitas were delicious.
The music was fire, the atmosphere was cool.
I would definitely recommend.
Loved my experience at Bar Luz! The food was so good & full of flavor, one of the best tacos ive tried & the vibe was amazing. The owner is super nice & share with us his story of opening the store. The staff were super kind & welcoming, which made it even better. I'll definitely be back!
We discovered Bar Luz since we had reserved at Alma for our anniversary, but they were temporarily closed, so they suggested we rebook at their little sister restaurant right next door (same chef & kitchen). While we were disappointed that we didn't get the chance to try Alma, Bar Luz was a very charming (albeit more casual) experience & we are happy we got to try it.
This restaurant places a lot of importance on using traditional methods & ingredients. The corn & peppers are imported, & the corn flour is freshly milled every morning. All tortillas are individually rolled, pressed & cooked to order. We appreciated that our waiter took the time to explain the process to us (service overall was really excellent).
In terms of food, everything was exceptional! We asked for a chef's choice & the menu they put together for us was well balanced, fresh, innovative & flavourful. We especially loved the scallop tostada (a work of art!) & cochinita pibil tacos, but everything we had was delicious & we had no complaints about anything we ate. The guajillo shrimps were grilled perfectly & incredibly juicy; the taco del dia (pork carnitas) melted in our mouths; tacos dorado (baja style) were light & crispy, & the sweet potato salad puree was creamy with a lovely smoky spice. For drinks we had mezcalitas & palomas & both of these were great as well.
The atmosphere in the restaurant (on a Wednesday evening) was relaxed & intimate. We were seated at the bar & enjoyed speaking with our waiter, who was clearly very passionate about his work & was very attentive throughout the evening.
In the summer on weekends, the restaurant apparently has alleyway parties with food on the grill & music. We are looking forward to coming back to try this out.
Excellent Mexican bar / restaurant. Very nice decor. The Tostadas & Tacos 🌮 are amazing.
Great vibe & ambiance & super friendly & courteous service. The drinks 🍸 were very well mixed & great taste & proportions presentation is also top notch.

Blown away. Just exceptional in every way, & something different for a city with an incredible amount of exceptional dining. We loved every bite, & I woke of thinking about the rice pudding the next morning. Can't wait to return.
