Stopped by this bar for a late night drink, & it did not disappoint. The drinks were solid, loved the Champagne Papi "Drake drink" & fruit loop shots (they were as good as they sound). The prices were decent. Definitely worth checking out if you're out late & looking for a good vibeView more

This bar was an absolute must-visit on my list with my partner, she had been to a previous iteration of this bar - & it shows that this place has consistently been a success since it's grown into a space 3x its original size. We were served by Elyssa & she was so helpful, I don't know how she knew that I was craving a pineapple flavoured drink, but she suggested I try the house special (also called Le Mal Nécessaire) - which was delectable. My partner got Elyssa's take on a hurricane & only superlatives could suffice to explain how good it was. Everyone should visit this bar when they're in Montréal.View more

Decent drinks in a beautiful new venue. The biggest problem was there weren't enough bartenders to provide adequate service, & we waited too long between orders & to receive the bill. The pina colada was surprisingly just okay. We found the venue got very loud as it's a fairly cavernous space.View more

Amazing nights guaranteed at this bar which used to rocks the Chinatown & now is bigger & better in its new location. The DJs are great, decor settings beautiful, drinks are a work of art of the service personalized & friendly. Let us commence with the important aspect: the cocktails. I sampled 3 drinks, which were satisfactory but ultimately unremarkable. Some are presented in an extravagant manner, such as those served in coconuts; however, fail to elicit a sense of good taste that would compel a return visit. The pricing is rather steep given the quality offered. The garnishes were rather lackluster-I have certainly encountered superior presentations. As for the service, it was adequate but not exceptional; it could be described as merely neutral.View more

A must-visit destination for all Montreal tourists! Great ambiance, phenomenol service & great drinks. It starts at the door. Very humble bouncers, & once you are seated, great hostesses charm you with the offerings. Ours was able to do a good read of rum vs. whisky. & then we had a couple more rounds. Everyone is welcome (three single guys In my case), but this is an amazing place to bring a date. The DJ is spectacular, too! Awesome transitions. Thank you for a great night. We only went for a few drinks before going out for dinner but what a great experience at the bar with the bartender, he was wonderful & engaging at explaining the various cocktails. We enjoyed the conversation about drinks & spirits. I would definitely go back at a time when it's not to busy to enjoy that time again. I highly recommend to anyone looking for imaginative cocktails both avec & sans alcohol.View more

Double review, of the old place & new First went there about a year ago. Small, but the drinks were great, staff was friendly & quick. I loved the little food menu from the place upstairs. The special drinks were amazing & i ordered several. Fast forward to the new location. The bar looks amazing. Lot more open then the old place. The bouncers were friendly & joking with us while we waited for a place. This is where the slight disappointment started. Once seated we waiting almost 30 mins for a server to come see us. People seated after us got served their drinks before the even took our order. In 1 hour we saw our server once. I'll give them that it was a busy evening, but it was irritating. The drinks were ok, I am not sure if they changed the recipe or ingredients since the old location but Le Mal Necessaire tasted a lot different then the old one. Maybe the pineapple was from concentrate? Something didn't taste the same in it. Still good but I'd drop the rating a star of how it used to be. & they don't have the snack menu anymore. SO over all great looking place. But maybe a victim of its own success? I didn't have the rude experience that some seem to speak of but our server took even longer to bring our bill then to take the drinks. another server saw us getting annoyed & came to help us. So service was mixed, drinks were better at the old place. But they layout was great. Good atmosphere. Maybe it was an off day.View more

Hidden bar in downtown montreal, no public signs outside, a bouncer greets you at the entrance. A cocktail drink costs around 20 cad, a pint of beer costs 9 cad. The bar is super classy & the ambiance reflects fancy music & clients.View more

Me & two friends only found this bar late on our last evening before heading home but I'm glad we did. You wouldn't know the bar is there to begin with. There are no signs & it is down a quiet street which I think adds to its speak easy vibe. It has a really chilled out cosy atmosphere with a DJ adding to it with some chilled out music. Our server Morgane was super attentive & helpful. Sat us at a table & we ordered some Old Fashioneds with her recommendation of bourbon. The drinks took a little longer to arrive but the bar was busy & we were happy just chatting. The Old Fashioned was really good! It's a shame we found this bar so late into our trip but I'm glad we found it eventually! Would absolutely return again next time we're in town.View more

Le Mal Nécessaire is an absolute gem! My experience last night was nothing short of amazing. The bartenders here are incredibly passionate about their craft, & it's evident in every drink they prepare. A special shoutout to the bartender Jess, who made our night unforgettable with her humor, kindness, & exceptional service. She really knows how to make guests feel special. We decided to try this bar out after seeing it on instagram & it was PHENOMENAL. We had so much fun the first night, we came back with more friends the following evening. We loved the ambiance, the music was not so loud that we couldn't have a conversation with each other & the staff were outstanding, they really put on a show! The drinks are on another level - I highly recommend the fruit loop shots. We loved hearing the back stories behind the drinks we ordered & how they came to fruition it was also a treat to get shown the back room that had elements from the former bar location (bar top & tile) under renovation. We will be hitting up mal every time we are in the city & you should too!View more
