I can honestly say that I have never had a worse experience at a Montreal restaurant than I did at Monsieur B. We had 6 pm reservations, got there on time and, yet, the service was sloth-like despite their tight deadline of 9 pm – we had to be out by 9 pm for the next service. When the food finally came, it was mediocre at best with the servings being even smaller than your average “fancy” restaurant. My wife asked for steak well-done, but it came bloody. She would have sent it back, but the servers never once interacted with us during the meal. As far as the mini-portions are concerned, I’d accept the small plates were they tasty and served with a side of good atmosphere. Unfortunately, the meals were tasteless and we were right next to the door in what is a cramped, closet-sized, loud dining room with uneven tables and hard-as-rock chairs. We were all freezing all night because the door was not three feet from my chair. My wife asked for us to be moved in the beginning, but we were given a “hell no” type response with zero sympathy. So, if you go, bring a jacket. Then, after a slow service, we paid for our limp fries and flavorless meals, tipped normally and were finishing about a ¼ glass of wine each – not a whole bottle or anything. It was 15 minutes to 9 and we understood the service went until 9. The waitress, without a hint of politeness, told us we needed to leave immediately because the people that reserved our table had arrived early. As it is customary to wait a bit to be seated especially when you’re too early, we asked if we could take five minutes to finish the wine and she raised her voice, insisting we leave. Well, we had 15 minutes left and, between the six of us, had just paid her restaurant over $300 in a BYOB joint. She didn’t care. Why give such slow service if you want such a tight deadline?
