After two-hybrid local editions, the MUTEK festival is back with a fully international 23rd edition in Montréal from August 23 to 28, 2022. Today is the unveiling of the first 25 the international artists who will perform live at several Quartier des Spectacles venues: the Society for Arts and Technology [SAT], MTELUS, Place des Arts' Théâtre Maisonneuve-and for the first time, Esplanade Tranquille, which, for six days, will host a must-see free outdoor stage.
Montrealers and festival-goers from all over the world will once again be able to take part in indoor and outdoor experiences together and discover an eclectic, inspiring selection of performances grounded in electronic music and digital creativity.
Brits Koreless and Loraine James will make their national premieres alongside Canadian Aquarian, offering up live performances inspired by their recent critically acclaimed productions, while the public will also enjoy Italian composer Caterina Barbieri and Norwegian saxophonist Bendik Giske.
Indonesian sensation Gabber Modus Operandi will deliver an explosive, multi-sensory evening of music-as well Deena Abdelwahed and Azu Tiwaline, who brilliantly fuse electronic and traditional North African sounds.
Pianist and vocalist Marina Herlop, experimental folk duo Tarta Relena, and activist creator-producer Cora Novoa will celebrate 25 years of cooperation between Catalonia and Québec. The European Keychange initiative will also make it possible for these three stellar musicians to perform: Efe Ce Ele, Liliane Chlela, and Sissel Wincent.
In addition, MUTEK is very excited to have invited English producer Luke Slater and his techno project, Planetary Assault Systems, to Montréal for the first time. Ecuadorian musician Nicola Cruz is sure to spread some tropical heat, both on stage and among the audience, as he did during his memorable 2019 performance as part of the festival's 20th anniversary.
