Born out of the Canadian Railroad Historical Association (CRHA), Exporail, The Canadian Railway Museum, continues the legacy of the passionate volunteers who made it possible to preserve and enhance Canada's rich railway heritage. In 1978, the Government of Canada named Exporail as Canada's specialized railway Museum. In 2007, Exporail asked the Government of Canada to recognize it as Canada's a National Railway Museum. That same year, Parliament passed a motion to that effect. Since then, Exporail has worked to have the Government of Canada carry out this motion of parliament. Following eight editions in Mosport, Ontario and two at Mont-Tremblant, in the Laurentians, on October 8, 1978 was disputed Montréal's first Grand Prix du Canada, on an island in the middle of the St. Lawrence. A native son, driving a Ferrari, won his first world championship race. On that day more than hree decades ago, Montréal, Ile Notre-Dame and its 4.5-kilometre track became more than a city, an island and a ribbon of pavement. They became Formula One holy ground. From year to year ever since, every June, tens of thousands of pilgrims have flocked to the island to watch the gods of motor racing. First there was Gilles Villeneuve. Then came Jones, Piquet, Mansell, Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Hill, Alonso, Hamilton, Vettel, Ricciardo and others. They come to conquer and they keep building on the legend of this always-thrilling Grand Prix.
