Review Summary

Wonton Express is widely celebrated for its authentic, handmade Shanghainese-style wontons that consistently deliver high-quality, flavorful, and comforting experiences. Guests frequently praise the delicious soups and unique sesame sauce options, noting that the portion sizes are generous and very reasonably priced compared to other establishments. While the restaurant features a simple, utilitarian aesthetic and an atmosphere that some describe as quiet or no-frills, the focus remains firmly on the exceptional food preparation. Potential diners should be aware that because every dish is made fresh to order, wait times can occasionally be long, and the service style is understated. Despite the modest decor, the restaurant has earned a reputation as a hidden gem for those seeking genuine traditional flavors in a welcoming, unpretentious setting.

Real deal Shanghainese wonton soup (seaweed, shrimp, white pepper, pork filling), tastes handmade.

Delicious food at affordable prices. Wait is a bit long. Nonetheless the wonton soup was a great portion for only $9.99. The Classic Siomai were huge & filled with tasty sticky rice, beans & ground meat. Service & decor are rather utilitarian (although they do have some plants against the wall). The food is where it's at!

We walked into the restaurant & it was completely empty. No customer around, no one working around. There was also no music, just the sound of refrigerators. We walked to the cash register & there was still no one in the back. As we were about to leave, we saw someone pop up behind the cash register & we decided to give the food a try. We ordered one spicy wonton & one regular soup wonton. It took another 30 mins or so for the food to be served even though we were the only table. The owner did play some music which made the atmosphere a bit more enjoyable but the overall decor wasn't great. Mostly stock boxes & used walls. The food itself though was quite amazing. The flavours from the wonton were great & it paired so well with the different soups we tried. Furthermore, it was only around 10$ a bowl & it ended up being quite filling which was nice. We only saw the owner one more time when he served us the food & we never saw them again for the rest of the night even though we stayed at the restaurant for another hour or so.

Upon entering this place I wasn't sure what to expect, the owners are soft spoken & the place has no frills, which wasn't what we came here for anyway just pointing out my first impression, but onto the food:

So incredibly good! We got 2 soup wontons, & the broth was so light & delicious at the same time, I added a little chili oil into my broth for some spice, & the wontons themselves were plentiful & savory. Went perfectly well with the broth & chili oil.

But our favorite was the cold noodle, I think they called it Haricot Noir, it had roasted peanuts, diced carrots, & minced pork in a sauce that once mixed, was so good!

This is spectacular.

Perhaps the best won ton soup I had, it genuinely is THAT delicious 5/5.

Definitely worth a wait (around 20 minutes).

I lived in China for 1.5 years & coming to this place threw me back there. This place is so genuine, & its flavors beat every pretentious competitor out there. Give this lovely couple a chance to take care of your palate. I had the Shanghai original spicy soup - tasty, comforting, & authentic. Great quality & quantity for the price. If you're super hungry, get a couple of items from the menu. It's still gonna be very cheap.
Oh, & the Chinese music is the ultimate touch.

The soup is delicious, & the chef want to redo the wonton I ordered because it is a little overcooked, but I'm fine with it, so the chef give us five dollars discount. Such a nice experience.

Food was served cold & water was extra charge. Very good won tons, just make sure you order them in soup.
