Review Summary

Overall, reviews portray Sésame as a stylish Asian fusion spot with tasty, well presented dishes, generous dumplings, and reliable service that helps guests enjoy a meal before a show. The menu covers favorites like General Tao, pad Thai and salmon tartare, with flavorful sauces, fresh ingredients and appealing cocktails, and the atmosphere is described as lively yet welcoming in a great downtown location. While the space can be loud when busy and service pace varies, the hospitality and quality keep guests returning and recommending Sésame for a satisfying, affordable dining experience before a show.

Made a reservation ahead of time. Walked in & was impressed by the decor & the the hip looking crowd. Walked past a table for two....Huh?....walked up the stairs & it began...

1) Sat down in the family section with babies & children, with a table glued to a wall that must have had a furnace on the other side because it was an oscillating vibrating feeling...like sitting on a clothes dryer. Moved the table off the wall & it was better. We're not picky, so we got over that by conversating.

2) Ordered the sharing meal for two & wanted a bottle of wine. No recommendations, just had to choose...know your wine menu much? Nope.

3) super salty edamames - Lick the tip of your finger & dunk it in a saltshaker then suck off the tip of your finger, thats what they tasted like. I asked the waitress if she could rinse them off a little bit, very laughingly cuz I know it was an awkward request...attitude: with the straightes face: "les rinser?... told thats how they taste (nope, that isn't at ALL what edamames are supposed to be BTW)

She took them & abided, but not without making us feel like picky twits...Im sorry but she would have gagged on those. They came back & were perfect!

Other than that FANTASTIC SOUP! Amazing!
I highly recommend the Thai Coco soup.

We ain't done yet.

4) A table of 2 sat down after us, ordered after us, got served first & paid & left...we finished our starters...soup & dumplings...in five minutes...two things usually premade & kept warm in any kitchen...we didn't stall on eating them BTW.

5) Add insult to injury, a table of TEN!! TEN PEOPLE! ordered maybe a minute before us, managed to eat, pay & walk out & we had just finished our starters.

6) Suddenly the entire section was almost empty with dish bins on the next table, waitress cleaning up...us & a table of three close by...just sitting there...each member just staring at each other having run out of conversation. while she wiped down the other tables. Hello! We're still here! Still hungry!

7) SO FAR...Sat at 7:10pm & by 8:45 we still hadn't received our main course. We asked the waitress what was going on & if the food was coming, she nodded unfazed & said yup. Told her we had a movie at 9:15 & our main course hadn't arrived yet...response? Tilted head with a lip to the side, eyes wider open, it looked like an "oh well" without saying the words.

Is it rude to ask for an update after 1.5 hours? Apparently.

At 8:50 we got our dishes. Very good! I can recommend the General Tao & the beef curry. The shrimp curry was a little strong but diluted with rice it was great!

8) Not ONCE ever did she check in to see how things are going & if everything is ok & never said thank you or goodbye. We weren't rude, we never raised our voices, always polite...

We had to skip the coffee & dessert we paid for to catch our movie.

*slow clap*

Don't spend your money here. As good as the food was, the service (or thorough lack of it!) & the fact that generally in Montreal better food can be had for cheaper killed the experience.
