This increasingly popular Portuguese grill, restaurant Jano, for many years has been offering a refreshing sanctuary in the most animated section of the Main. Serving the same country cuisine and earning a reputation for their charcoal grilling and features a top-secret marinade that keeps people coming back. Sample menu at Jano: Portuguese green cabbage soup (Caldo Verde), grilled sardines, sweet peppers, grilled trout and red seabream, grilled lamb cutlets, grilled Portuguese sausages, crème caramel (pudim flan), etc...
Jano delivers comforting Portuguese flavors with generous portions at reasonable prices, creating a welcoming family friendly vibe that keeps diners coming back. The menu shines with well executed items such as grilled chicken, sardines, calamari, pork steak and Pastel de Nata served warm with cinnamon, all backed by a reliable friendly service that makes guests feel at home and even shares little stories from Portugal. The homemade chips are a standout, as are the sauces and carefully prepared meats that can be ordered to suit the appetite. The atmosphere is casual and authentic, with simple decor and a sense of being part of the neighborhood. This combination of hearty food, attentive service, and value makes Jano a dependable choice for meals with family or friends.
Delicious chicken! Their homemade spicy oil is incredible 🤩 I also highly recommend you try their shrimp entrée (we ate it so fast that we forgot to take pictures haha)
We didn't want to brave line up for Schwartz's & we were so glad that we stopped in. The food was excellent & the portions were quite generous. If you are in the area it might be a key move to skip the line at Schwartz's & get quick friendly service here at Jano. Our meal was less than $20 per person for chicken, salad & a generous serving of fries.
Literally the best Portuguese chicken I have ever had. Nelson was the most informative & friendly waiter. Very personable & honest & funny. The sauce for the chicken was delicious, the chicken was really tender & the chip potatoes they give you are great too. A must try. Thank you for a wonderful expensive
Very nice decor & ambiance, & the food was really good. Rich flavours & good meats, the chicken was delicious
I loved how the two young servers who greeted us at the door were very smiley & friendly, although the one who took our order could've been a bit more patient
Overall very pleasant experience I definitely recommend 👌
We love Portuguese food & we have visited many restaurants but for chicken, hands down the best place in Montreal for Portuguese chicken. Their friend chips are outstanding & not sure where they get their Pasteis de Nata from but they are outstanding of this world. Our good friends introduced us to this family restaurant so now we will go back with our family 💖
I was a regular in the 90s. I returned in September 2024, after 22 years. TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT. The grilled calamari has nothing to do with what was served in the past. Tasteless slices of seafood. Tasteless. The same happened with the grilled chicken: zero taste. Jano's glorious past is down the toilet today. Bye Jano! Never again.
My friend reccomended this place while my visit Montreal! Food was amazing their salad, bread, fries, chicken & ribs are so so so fresh & so delicious. Ordered the food after my routine workout. the gentleman at the phone was super nice, also went to pick up & everyone was really welcoming, & the atmosphere looked cozy , however when I open the food to eat at home the chicken outer layer was burned.
Really loved this restaurant. Service was quick & great. Price is good & offers big portions. Fries were delicious & chicken was juicy. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the grilled calmari. Other than that everything was great. Will definitely come again!
We didn't feel like waiting in line at a neighbouring restaurant, so we picked this restaurant right next door. It was after the lunch rush. As soon as we walked it, an employee loudly complained about it never ending. I found it quite rude & shocking but said nothing in the hopes he wasn't referring to more customers arriving. I did check the restaurant's opening hours online just in case they were closed from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., but it said they were open. I even asked an employee if they were open to be extra sure. I hope we weren't intruding. If we were, they could have just pretended they were closed. The restaurant was almost empty save for a table of customers & 4 employees. An employee seated us right away,... next to a container that was catching water from the dripping air conditioner. An odd choice considering that all the other tables were free. After a few minutes, the employee from the beginning came to take our order. He & 2 other employees brought the entrées, main meal, drinks & dessert. The wait staff checked in & made sure we had everything we needed. The chicken was crispy & perfectly seasoned on the outside & tender & juicy on the inside. It paired perfectly with the soft bread from the table basket. I couldn't get enough of the thick, crispy-&-soft homemade potato chips with skins on the edges (portuguese potatoes). They're addictive. The pastel de nata (egg tart) was rich & flaky, & fresh custard oozed out with every bite. The flan was okay, but we were expecting a fully intact wedge like in the picture, & instead it looked as though someone had taken a big bite out of the tip. The kitchen should consider cutting it in a different shape. The decor, music & nature scenes were calming. I think we just caught the staff on an off moment.
