Review Summary

Reviewers describe Restaurant El Amigo as a cozy, homey spot with generous portions and a Salvadoran leaning menu centered on pupusas. Some meals disappoint, with pupusas described as lacking filling and the curtido days old while the salsa felt too liquid, but other dishes earn praise, including a highly regarded quesadilla and the fish soup. Portions are consistently large and meals are often cooked to order, though some items may have been frozen and reheated and not served hot in the center. Service is described as friendly and strong for groups, yet at times staff feel overwhelmed and tap water is not provided. The atmosphere feels like a family kitchen, with dated decor and a TV showing Spanish programs, offering a warm, grandparents' home vibe. Bring your own wine or beer, and reservations by phone are common; accessibility for wheelchairs is limited. Overall, Restaurant El Amigo provides hearty Salvadoran fare and a memorable dining experience, with a mix of hits and misses that diners weigh as part of the charm.

Great cozy restaurant just don't understand why it says Mexican ! It's more Salvadoran food Home of Pupusas !

This is my favorite mexican/salvadorean restaurant in Mtl. The food is always amazing. The portions are big & the prize is very fair. I always go there at least twice a year for the last 5 years. It never went down in quality throughout the years.

We walked pass & decided to try this restaurant. Great portion of food. Its my first time trying Mexican-Salvadoran dishes. Tastes are good for every dish, i just feel like its not that flavorful for me. Theres only one uncle took the order, prepared the food, friendly service. The atmosphere is old fashioned, not fancy but overall is ok for a quick stop.

The food here brings back the memories of when i was an exchange student in the states! My host family cooked me mexican food almost everyday. When i had my first bite of the black bean, it really remind me of my host family. They cooked me the beat mexcian food that i have ever had in my life. The chef is the server too. He is really lovely & helpful.

What a gem of a place! Lacking in atmosphere but the food more than compensates. Staffed by a single elderly man who both took & prepared our order. His service was pretty satisfactory, but his cooking was great! Menu had a nice variety of dishes spread between Salvadoran & Mexican cuisine. The prices blew me away with how good they were, I ended up ordering 2 pupusas as well as an entire platter. If it wasn't so out of the way for me, I'd come here on the regular & ensure he stays in business.

As a mexican costumer.. this food feels like home. The atmosphere is boring but that's okay so you don't feel like rushing while eating, the owner is friendly.
