I visited Portovino in Laval with a group over the weekend, having heard about the restaurant over the years & finding the menu promising. Unfortunately, the experience was mixed, & I apply my rule of giving the lowest star rating for overall, which brings this to a 3/5.
Service:
The service was hands down the best part of the experience. We were welcomed with a smile & shown to our section promptly. Our waiter was super friendly, helpful, & understanding throughout the night. When we mentioned not liking the mocktail sangria (which had an unpleasant aftertaste), he graciously removed it from the bill without hesitation. The staff truly elevated the evening.
Atmosphere:
The atmosphere was nice but nothing extraordinary. The space is modern with low lighting & higher ceilings, creating a comfortable setting. It was buzzing with people enjoying a night out, which added energy to the room.
Food:
This is where Portovino fell short. We ordered calamari, which was perfectly cooked & a highlight. The eggplant parm, however, was undercooked. The eggplant was hard to cut & had an overly crunchy texture that suggested it needed more time in the oven. Unfortunately, no one checked on us during this course, likely because the staff was busy with large groups.
The pizza was the biggest disappointment. While large in size & nicely presented, the flavor did not meet expectations. The sausage in particular felt undercooked, lacking any char that would indicate the high heat oven cooking you expect from a pizza. For the price point, the quality was simply not there.
Drinks were fine overall, but the mocktail sangria had a distinct bad aftertaste. As people who regularly enjoy non-alcoholic beverages, this was one of the rare instances where we could not finish a drink.
Verdict:
Portovino has a wonderful team & a pleasant atmosphere, but the food execution & pricing need attention. For the cost, I expected more from the dishes. I hope they address these kitchen inconsistencies, as the service alone deserves recognition.
Excellent service par tout le monde! Cuisine avec saveurs, mais un peu trop salée pour certains (les pizzas). Pour Le stationnement, il y en beaucoup, mais les soirs où la place Bell est occupée, il faut prévoir arriver plus tôt si vous réservez. Deux étages, donc prévoir si vous êtes handicapés de prendre le rdc.

We were a BIG group (over 30). One the rare occasion I experienced great service as part of a group. Thanks to our server, Sargio! . Both meals were good. I took the spaghetti con salsiccia. My husband got the Peperonita, pancetta E funghi Pizza. I tested the penne con pollo & the Ravioli con carne. Of all 4 the penne con polo was the best. Our desserts were good as well. Nothing negative to say! Thanks again.

Aujourd'hui on était un groupe de 18 personnes que j avais invitée à une brunch gastronomique comme vous lannoyet que j avais vécus déjà la dernière fois
Ont à bien mangé oui mais pour ce que le mots gastronomique je suis pas certain car les
Choix son beau mais assez limité & vous avez une réputation d'été reconnue pour vos plats de
Pâte & pizzas & bien d autre plat délicieux
Vous savez on a reçu un très bon services & l endroit est super mais pour l instant & la plupart des gens qui ont venue avec nous cela notre dernier fois

The prices on the menu on the website have not been updated wt new prices, which are extremely expensive now! A margarita pizza goes for $30, other types are more expensive. A plate of basic pasta 45$, calamari $26 plus tax & tip!! Food was ok, svc was slow (we went on a Thursday). I would not recommend it.

Excellent service de Victor. Prix très compétitif surtout pour un apportez votre vin ce qui diminue la facture totale. Autant les pâtes que pizzas, très bon
Très bruyant un vendredi soir , dérangeant.
La pizza même avec de bons ingrédients n'est pas réussi car la pâte est quelques part entre le pain & le gâteau. Un changement de pâte sera nécessaire, donc rapport qualité prix vraiment pas acceptable.
Honnêtement, ont allait aux hockey & pas appréciés se restaurant mais…… ce qu'ont a pris étais succulent & MON restau italien a pris le bord & je vais me précipiter pour aller juste relaxer & manger!!!!! Ont Etait assis en haut ♥️ calmars frits en entrée wow moi qui est hyper difficile (car j'ai mon restau pour La perfection ) mais honnêtement wow. Risottos fruits de mer♥️♥️♥️ & pizza miammm!!!! Des suggestions pour ma prochaine visites?
We were invited to celebrate a friend's birthday at this place - neither my wife nor I had ever been at one of these restaurants, & I have to say, that while it was far noisier & crowded than I would have liked, the service & the food was excellent. We were a table of 12 or more & everyone ordered something either slightly different or completely so. Our waiter was polite & high-spirited & he made the experience worthwhile. I had a Caesar Salad & a fancy pizza, while others had Ossu Bucco or other equally interesting dishes that required a good cook. They didn't disappoint! I took some of the pizza home, but everything was wonderful, everyone enjoyed themselves, & given that it is a BYOWine type of establishment, the orders didn't break the bank, despite that they were slightly higher priced than I am used to. Everything has gone up this last year about 3 fold, so I wasn't surprised. I don't mind paying for something which I can enjoy - it's paying for something that disappoints that gets me angry! No anger here - everything was delicious. Bring some earplugs if you are going at regular hours, & enjoy! soon, you will be tasting something wonderful & the sound will fade into the background as your tastebuds begin to celebrate!
Prix trop cher payer 5$de plus partager pizza avec mon époux & en plus charger la salade quand ma dit que compris dans prix rendue compte chez nous pas aime cela déçu de non dit pas sur de retourner aime pas le non franchise des gens
J'ai eu le plaisir de visiter ce restaurant samedi dernier pour célébrer l'anniversaire de ma femme, & nous avons passé un excellent moment. L'endroit est très propre, ce qui est toujours appréciable. Les pizzas & les pâtes étaient délicieuses, préparées avec soin. De plus, notre serveur était très aimable & a su rendre notre expérience encore plus agréable. Nous reviendrons avec plaisir !

Went here for a birthday party. We were nine people. first I must say the food is nothing special, & more than overpriced for the quantity & quality, $25.00 for Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce. lol. Before ordering, a glass of water accidentally spilled, we had to clean it up our selves, but they did supply the towels. The waiter came by & asked if there were any questions, after the first question was asked & answered he walked away, but there were more questions. We did bring our own wine, had to ask for a wine bucket & opened the bottles ourselves. I ordered the Mussels $33.00, which were very good (fries were the best part). With an appetizer of Fried Calamari which was 8 pieces, charge was $27.00 for the Calamari (see photo). Wife ordered a Margarita Pizza another over priced item at $23.00. For dessert we had our own BD cake, with coffee, never even asked if we wanted more coffee. & to top it off, they charge $3.00/slice to cut the birthday cake. Wouldn't mind if the service was good & the cake wasn't served on warm plates. This place is overpriced for the quality & amount of food on the plates. Definitely on the "no return" list for us.

Probably the fact that it is a byob makes it worse, but the food is highly over priced. Big quantities with only decent quality. The kid's pizza is not even the same as the adult pizza (it tastes like a cheap delivery pizza at best). Otherwise the place is nice & the staff is good.
Wonderful! Great food! Everything was delicious. Pizza, pasta, osso bucco & the steak was cooked to perfection. Reasonable price. Big portions. Great ambiance. Can't wait to come back!
Osso bucco supposedly their signature dish rice was awful meat eatable, sauce salty was not what I expected, pizza 5 people said it was 5 on 10 & 2 where sick overnight No service provided to open wine bottles The rest of the food 7 on 10 We reserved for 22 people Washroom are mixed & on second floor The place is extremely loud acoustics need a major improvement
