About

Poissonnerie Rayan specializes in a robust selection of fresh seafood and authentic Egyptian culinary traditions. Patrons encounter a direct focus on high-quality aquatic proteins prepared with traditional Mediterranean spices and cooking techniques. The menu highlights crispy, golden-battered fish and chips served alongside aromatic rice dishes and savory seasoned vegetables. Ingredients undergo rigorous quality checks to maintain consistent flavor profiles across every prepared plate. This establishment functions as a primary source for both raw premium fish and ready-to-eat maritime delicacies prepared with precise, time-honored methods. The surrounding atmosphere reflects a utilitarian approach to seafood preparation where the freshness of the catch dictates the daily selection. Diners benefit from a straightforward menu structure that prioritizes natural ocean flavors combined with distinct North African culinary influences for a cohesive gastronomic experience.

Review Summary

Poissonnerie Rayan is widely regarded as a top destination in Montreal for fresh, high-quality seafood that is prepared to order in a market-style format where patrons select their own fish and preparation method. Many diners praise the authentic Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors, particularly highlighting the calamari, tiger shrimp, grilled fish, and potato wedges as standout dishes. While the atmosphere is often described as welcoming and reminiscent of seaside dining, some customers have expressed frustration regarding a lack of clear pricing, the pressure to order large portions, and what they perceive as high costs. Although the majority of reviews celebrate the delicious food and helpful service, others have noted inconsistencies in the billing process and staff attentiveness, suggesting that while the culinary experience is consistently excellent for many, prospective visitors should remain mindful of their total order to ensure a smooth and budget-conscious experience.

Food tastes good but overpriced. Per piece lobster was $22. Tip was kind of mandatory for them. At the kitchen, the main chef in fish section didn't allow us time to choose fish & he was rushing which disappointed us.

Super nice seafood from middle east, fresh seafood market style, you select what you want & how it will be cooked. Very friendly staff. you must try the saute shrimps, it is out of this world, also grilled fish is very good, & their potatoes are fantastic

I had an outstanding experience at Poissonnerie Rayan. The freshness of the fish is undeniable, & being able to personally select exactly what you want from the display makes the whole experience feel authentic & reassuring. We tried the dorade & calamari, & everything was incredibly delicious, perfectly cooked, & full of flavor. I also appreciated that there's a convenient option to order to go without compromising on quality. The cozy, welcoming environment makes it a great spot to relax & enjoy top-notch seafood. Highly recommended!!!

Dont go to this place if you do not want to pay fortune for a finger size fish. Probably the most expensive restaurant in Montreal. Dont go there.

As you walk in, they direct you to the back where you choose the fresh fish & seafood you want & tell them if you want it grilled or fried. Then you go sit down & wait for them to bring it to you. We were pleasantly surprised there was no fresh fish/seafood or fried smells in the dining area, the food was excellent, perfectly seasoned & grilled/fried. It's a little pricey but it is fresh fish & seafood cooked on demand. Would definitely go back!

The food is good, it's not the first time we go to Rayan but the last time we came is a long time ago. They do not tell you how much you will pay before hand which is wrong. We paid $200 for 2 people we only got shrimps & calamari & 1 small red snapper fish…. If you want to charge this much include sides, offer alcohol drinks & turn the restaurant into a LUXURY restaurant. The place isn't nice looking & it's not an experience in order for you to charge an exorbitant amount of money. It's better you change your branding into a luxury restaurant make the inside looks appropriate for the amount of money you're charging. You can't charge 5 star restaurant for a place that looks like a fast food & also receive fast food service. C'mon. Won't be back ever again in my life.

There is no menu & price before hand !
3 people, we spend 210$, 2fish, one plate of calamari & shrimp.
Their dishes dont have sides & you have to order them separately & pay for them.
Even the fish didnt have fries!
It was delicious but expensive & confusing!
I prefer to know what im gonna order in advance & how much im gonna to pay.

I used to work in a seafood kitchen so my love i dear. I went for the fish & chips & the fish portion was horrible undercooked & also chewy. Bad portion as well. On top of this when I went to pickup for takeout they had a cash only which of course had an atm even though they had a debit machine. Charge me an extra 3$ to take out cash. Something they could have said on the phone. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Rayan is a favourite of mine, I am a regular. It reminds me of being in Egypt where fresh fish has been caught. You pick your fish & let them know how you would like it prepared & seasoned. Our favourites the smelt, shrimps, potatoe wedges & salad. There is bound to be left overs. Portions are generous. The seasoning, textures & freshness are unbeatable. They have sustainable take boxes & paper bags. We were three women & could not eat it all. Served family style. The owner is a delightful Egyptian Canadian gentlemen. The staff, team are helpful. Service is great. The flavours, freshness of our seafood & fish dishes are delicious. I feel as if I am by a seaside restaurant in Alexandria or the Red Sea. With Egyptian music playing in the background. Fun as I would recognise the music!
They have no beer, wine, alcohol nor is it a BYOW.( just like in Egypt). They do have Egyptian soft drinks.
Its always full after 20h00. The diners come diverse backgrounds, just like the neighbourhood & it is just beautiful.
