Was incredibly disappointed with both the quality of coffee & service my friend & I received here on Sunday, July 12th.

I was visiting Montreal & being a huge coffee lover, was excited to try Micro Espresso given their inclusion in the Top 100 Coffee Shops in the World list this year.

From the get go, we arrived to a barista who punched in our order, barely acknowledging us, & answering questions with one word answers (yes, no, etc.).

Fine, it's Sunday, we came late & you want to focus on the coffee itself, not a problem.

But the coffee itself, hugely disappointing. We ordered two flat whites which were prepared in less than two minutes. This sounds great but as all coffee lovers know, it takes time to pull a high quality shot & steam milk properly.

What we ended up getting was an awful ratio of mostly over steamed milk with a splash of barely noticeable coffee. The last picture I posted shows two important things:

1) the overly steamed milk (looks more like a cappuccino than a flat white)

2) a lack of latte art. it's become an unfortunate trend in coffee shops in North America that they tend to not care to add any art for to-go lattes. It's less about the art & more about the respect for the customer & the attention to detail in taking an extra 5-10 seconds to show the level of care the barista has. I have lots of respect for baristas as they not only have a hard job dealing with rushes of impatient customers but also having to lead a lot of difficult skills to serve a great cup of coffee. Lots of which goes, generally, under appreciated by the average customer.

All that's to say, for a coffee shop to have been featured in a global list, this was a massive disappointed in both coffee & service.

Service vraiment à revoir, zéro sourire à peine un bonjour & le café mais dégeulasse, honnêtement, pour un coffee shop qui se dit de spécialité, c'est décevant

Maybe not as super-high of a review as some of the others here. I tend to buy pretty high quality beans for my pour-over & I have been doing it for some time now. I felt the pour-over here was pretty lackluster to say the least. It took an inordinate amount of time, which never helps the taste profile. I know'espresso' is in the name of the shop, & the pour-over concept is sort of newer north of the border. Just 2 years ago I couldn't find a pour-over anywhere between Montreal & Tremblant. So this is a good step.

As mentioned, the service for the cup was slow. 2 people behind the counter were nice enough; the girl more than the guy. He made the cup & it just took a while.

The chocolate pastry we got was excellent.

Atmosphere was very nice, but small inside. There are a few spots at the counter but generally this is a takeaway shop. I do enjoy sitting & tasting the coffee. But that wasn't in the cards for this trip so we brought it with us.

Next time I'll try the espresso to see if it hits better.

This is truly a specialty coffee shop! It just opened, but it's worth visiting for the coffee alone - 100% recommended for specialty coffee lovers!

A cute little coffee shop hidden in a corner of Old Port. It's mostly for takeout but they do have a tiny seating area. Great coffee served by friendly & skilled baristas! I always go for an iced latte which is definitely one of the best I've ever had in Montreal. Also LOVE their small batch roasted beans for espresso & cold brew.

Update: still my fav place 2 years later!

Not once, not twice...but thrice. This was our favourite coffee shop & a frequent stop while visiting Montreal. The espresso was well rounded, smooth & flavourful. The barista's were consistent, with proper technique & skill. A must visit.

Tucked away at a building in the Old City, this coffee shop is small but quaint with a great atmosphere & service. The coffee itself is locally roasted. They have Cold Brew which is always a plus to me! The coffee itself tastes delicious & I highly recommend!
