So I have eaten here many times over the years including take out & eat in. I honestly don't know how they stay open for so many years as every time I pass by there are very few people inside.
Food. Below average & not consistent nor fresh.
Service. Generally slow unless you're a regular or a larger party spending a lot of money I suppose.
Atmosphere. Old, dated & original but at the same time classic Italian cosy.
So take out pizza, what they are famous for. Dough is very very chewy & taste is nothing to write home about. Sauce is barely noticeable & what little you can taste is disappointing. Cheese is limited & thin as well as not covering the entire pizza properly. It was somewhere between a thin crust & slightly more. Pepperoni coverage was poor & overall price was very high for what they serve.
Eating in the restaurant during the week on a Wednesday & a Thursday evening proved to be poor. The bread on table was ok, but salad was a shame a total let down. Other foods orders were not even worth writing about as I haven't anything good to say so I will leave it there.
In summary I suspect that this area has such a limited number of restaurants this place have a built in audience by default & not by choice if they want something close by.
I would certainly not return as it's definitely worth while to drive a little further & have some quality food - Italian or otherwise.
I ordered the tortellini soup & it was extremely disappointing. The broth tasted like dishwater, the pasta was heavy & unpleasant, & I ended up with a stomachache afterwards. For the price, I expected much better quality. Definitely not a place I would recommend or return to.
If you have watched the Office When Michael Scott Bought from the Wrong Pizza Place this would be worse!
The service & ambiance were great. There was something a little lacking in the pizza, if I'm very honest, but I think it's more the style of pizza rather than a lack of quality. Altogether a pleasant experience.
Absolutely delicious pizza. Incredibly it still tastes the same as it did 44 years ago when it first became a weekly treat for me as a kid. The consistency of taste & texture over generations is a mark of care & quality that's rare. Bravo Mama Mia Pizzeria!
