I never thought I would have to write such a negative review, but the experience we had at Mme de Bovary for our Christmas party was so disastrous that I feel obligated to warn others - especially businesses who, like us, want to offer a special evening to their team.
We've been organizing Christmas parties for 18 years in various restaurants across Laval. Never - & I truly mean never - have we been treated with such disrespect, arrogance, & indifference.
When we booked, everything was clearly discussed & approved by the owner, Benjamin:
• a specific section reserved for our group of 25 people,
• access to the karaoke room after dinner,
• the option to arrive early & wait in the back bar area,
• permission to bring our own Yule log.
We planned this evening with excitement, confident that we were offering a memorable experience to our employees.
On the night of the event, the exact opposite happened.
From the moment we arrived, things went wrong:
- Sudden refusal of our dessert, even though it had been approved. We were told we'd be charged per slice, with a condescending tone that set the mood immediately.
- No access to the back bar, despite being told beforehand that we could wait there.
- Our'reserved' section was not actually reserved. Other customers were seated there because, according to the owner, he wasn't going to'lose 5 seats.'
- Extremely slow service, with staff clearly unsure of how to handle the situation.
& the worst part:
The karaoke room - the surprise highlight I had planned for my team - was not available after all.
There was no communication. No warning.
We learned about it by accident from a server.
When we confronted the owner, he insisted he had told us - which is completely untrue - & then changed his story, saying he'might have forgotten.'
No apology. No real attempt to fix the situation.
Just a cold, arrogant attitude that showed a complete lack of respect.
At that moment, I felt the evening I had poured my heart into collapse. I'm not exaggerating when I say I was in tears from frustration & disappointment. We offer this moment to our employees once a year. It's supposed to be festive, memorable, joyful. Instead, it turned into stress & humiliation - something no customer should ever experience in a place that claims to offer hospitality.
The manager then tried to brush it off by saying,'What matters is being with your people.'
No. What matters is respecting your customers, honoring your commitments, & taking responsibility when you fail to deliver what you promised.
We left after dinner, took back our Yule logs, & finished our night… in our office.
That says it all.
After 18 years of corporate events, I can confidently say this was the worst experience we have ever had.
A mix of broken promises, bad faith, total disorganization, & blatant disrespect for customers.
I strongly advise against choosing this restaurant for any group event.
Merci!
