Known as a Montreal institution, Le Taj has been deeply entrenched in the downtown core for over 3 decades.
The decor at Le Taj represents a true synthesis of the complex, the colourful, the simple and the elegant. Carefully curated with handmade wooden carvings from the early 18th century, juxtaposed with the 12-foot mud wall adorning the backdrop of the dining room - which was in fact the central installation from the Indian Pavilion at Expo ‘67 - the decor often leaves our guests speechless while maintaining a certain feeling of warmth that mirrors the cuisine. At the rear end of the restaurant, our tandoor (traditional clay oven) is visible through a glass wall, leaving guests with a window into the world of our chefs, who can be seen cooking tandoori delicacies from fresh naan to our signature tandoori chicken.
Owner, Vinod Kapoor, opened the restaurant in 1985, with the idea of creating a space where Indian food could be devoured within the respected setting it deserved: white table clothes, fine wine and a decor that highlights the rich cultural and artistic history of his native India. Having previously been a collector and dealer of Indian art and antiques, his keen eye for interesting pieces has made its impression on the ambiance of the restaurant, where most of the artwork is one of a kind (including a piece from the Indian Pavilion at Expo ’67!).
It is with this same passion that Mr. Kapoor, who can still be seen buzzing around the dining room on a busy night, continues to maintain the high quality and exceptional service to old and new clients alike. Over the years, Le Taj has become a staple for many Montrealers and international clients, with a number of patrons having grown up dining with us and coming back over time with families of their own. In that respect, our own family of dedicated staff members - many of whom have been with us since the very beginning - are in large part how we have built our reputation of excellence for over 30 years. With a large number of our regular patrons making up a who's who, and having been as loyal to us as we have been to them and to our classical recipes, we hope to continue our journey in the mastery of culinary arts and service for many years to come.
Le Taj is described as an authentic, elegant Indian dining experience in Montreal with consistently flavorful dishes, generous portions, and attentive service in a warm, vintage inspired setting. The lunch buffet earns praise for taste, speed and value, with especially strong naan and a wide selection, while dinner is noted for a refined atmosphere and a solid tasting menu that keeps long time visitors returning. Takeout also delivers restaurant quality flavors at home, and overall the reviews portray Le Taj as a reliable staple known for quality ingredients, thoughtful service, and a welcoming vibe that suits family meals, date nights and groups alike.
The quality of the food does not justify its price, & the portion sizes were insufficient. Despite the pleasant ambiance & good service, the taste of the Indian dishes fell short compared to more affordable options elsewhere.
Le Taj Indian Restaurant, situated in downtown Montreal, provides a dining experience with both positives & areas for improvement. Its central location adds to its appeal, but there's room for enhancement in the overall dining experience. The Seek kebab starter impressed with its unique spice blend, offering a departure from the norm. However, the Tikka Masala main dish was underwhelming, failing to meet expectations. With some refinement in its main dishes, Le Taj could elevate its dining experience.
great naan bread & great butter chicken!! the staff are so sweet & the food is amazing!! i come & buy their fresh naan bread every week! totally worth it. thank you guys for the great work!
The food was good but not mind blowing by any means. This restaurant came highly recommended but fell short in my view. Also, the food was not as hot as it should have been when it arrived at the table & dare I say caused some digestive issues the next morning.
The service is great, & the food is good. Although you won't expect the hottest to be as reflective, it was still excellent quality. The mint naan was also an eye opener that I haven't tried before. Their assorted fried vegetable platter was also not too greasy as some samosas go.
What a great ambience of this restaurant. Fine dine in Indian restaurant in Montreal with very reasonable pricing. Food was descent & seevice was amazing.

Fantastic food, but won't go back! So here is the reason, I went to this restaurant as a planed outing with a bunch of coworkers to celebrate a holiday in India which my coworkers were missing while being in Canada. It was also a discovery meal to teach those of us unfamiliar with Indian cuisine. We were a large group, over 12 of us. The food was great, the garlic Naan was amazing! We spent approximately 2 hours at the restaurant & were raving about the experience. That is, until the bill came. We knew this evening wouldn't be cheap & when the bill came & it was nearly 700$, we weren't surprised. We asked for an equal split & were happy to all add gratuity. The restaurant brought out several de it machines to speed up payments, which we appreciated. However the last payment being made, the waiter was apparently unhappy with the amount of his gratuity & took it upon himself to throw the receipt in my coworker's face & berated her for the tip amount. This was the last possible minute of the meal experience & this waiter completely ruined an evening out with my coworkers. I have sat on my thumbs & waited a couple weeks to write my review to allow my anger to pass & so I could write more factually than emotionally. We called the manager over, made the situation clear & he said he would speak to his employees about this. I was quite dissatisfied with his response & his laidback attitude . He made no offer to have us back or offer a discount on the 700$ meal we just had. If he had offered us even an order of Naan to go it would have been something. A very sad end to what was a wonderful meal experience. I won't go back & will bring our work events elsewhere in future.
The vibe was great & food was delicious as well. Over 40 years of service. We ordered lamb chops, Naan, paneer masala, chicken Tikka tandoori. Lamb chops were amazingly marinated. Chicken was juicy & cooked to perfection. Naan was soft & buttery as well. BUT the paneer wasn't that good. Do book a reservation as it's always packed. The place was little cramped & the spicy is not spicy at all.
