Paris may be an ocean away, but the art of casual French bistro dining is not lost at Le Pois Penché in the heart of downtown Montréal.
The menu reads like a who’s-who of Parisian comfort food favourites, with beloved classics the likes of steak tartare and duck confit in mustard sauce alongside an array of spectacular seafood platters. Boasting one of the most interesting wine collections in the city, Le Pois Penché offers an impressive selection of imported bottles and wines by the glass.
This authentic French brasserie delivers fine cuisine in simple opulence: plush red velvet, checkerboard floor tile, crystal chandeliers, large paintings and a blackboard listing the daily specials on the wall. In the middle, a large bar; around it, busy waiters flitting to and from, outfitted in the traditional white shirt, black vest and apron. French bistro, through and through.
Le Pois Penché’s terrasse buzzes with animated conversation while its private banquet rooms reserve their splendour for group functions. Le Cellier, in particular, offers a sumptuous venue for events up to 70 guests, with vibrant Parisian settings by artist Pierre Pivet, a vaulted brick ceiling, and the restaurant’s prized wine cellars displayed behind sleek glass panels. Connected to the brasserie, Salon Chez Swann, in the boutique hotel of the same name, is ideal for groups of 24 guests or less.

What an amazing dinner & service. The night started with a cheerful greeting by India. She went out of her way to get us the perfect table ( not an easy feat ). Then our server Guillaume gave us the best service by showing up on time every time for every course. We asked Guillaume to select our menu based on some criteria & he absolutely killed it. Every course & wine was perfectly paired. He did this on his own & in other places you have to pay double for this! My daughter called this place a 10 out of 10 & I could not agree more! Excellent night, amazing first time at Le Pois Penche. I asked our waiter his name, & of course, it slips my mind now (Francois maybe, oh he was so knowledgeable about the wines, was friendly enough to talk about his home in Monaco, & was wonderfully warm about all of our menu selections. We had a beautiful champagne with dinner, oysters, starters, & Brittany had the canard confit, & I had the Atlantic salmon with leeks for mains. Insanely good. Truly fine french cuisine (I have been to Paris, & this takes me there.) Would go back in a heartbeat. Make that, half a heartbeat. Merci beaucoup!View more

My experience at Le Pois Penché was nothing short of spectacular, thanks to the incredible service provided by Mehdi & his team. I had an amazing time hosting my engagement party there! Despite managing our large group of 27, Mehdi was the epitome of attentiveness & professionalism. He ensured every detail was perfect & made me feel completely at ease. Everything from service to food was perfect. We were a table of 2 & got a quaint table near the door. The onion soup was delicious & so was the burrata with carrots. I asked the waiter if I could get the homemade cavatelli with an extra onglet de boeuf on top & he had a blast going to the kitchen & making the request for me. Gorgeous place, yummy seafood, attentive staff, in a great location. Me & my partner went for lunch, we got the seafood platter & it was so yummy & a great value. Especially for the place. The salmon tar tar was yummy & fresh. Get it spicy, it's not super hot but its soo flavorful. & the creme brulee is creamy & well balanced, not at all sweet & the caramelization on top is perfect. This place is a must stoo on a culinary tour of Montreal. The staff the open kitchen & the food was amazing. Our server Guillaume was very helpful in choosing entres & wine. They have sourced out a farm that has certified Wagu cows limited to only 14 animals.a year. Although didn't have time to try will definitely partake next time. I have been to many Michelin Star establishments as you can see from my posts & this place is by far one of the top 5 restaurants I have been to. The flavor was outstanding in everything & you can feel the passion in the food that is prepared. The oysters were perfect. The grilled octopus is comparable to Octopus I have had in Rome.
