Review Summary

La Retenue comes across as a friendly, dependable dive bar with a warm neighborhood vibe, offering a large basement space for events, gaming machines, and good music, all paired with reasonably priced beer. Reviewers note courteous service from arrival and a lively yet relaxed atmosphere that invites conversation, while the drinks, including a notably good Negroni, receive high praise. Overall it’s considered an essential local stop with regular events and a welcoming, social environment that makes it a standout choice in the area.

?I had a deeply disturbing & discriminatory experience at La Retenue on Jan 3rd around 10:40 - 10 :50 PM. I went in to politely inquire about a job, something I have done at many other local establishments & pubs without issue. However, I was immediately targeted & blocked at the door by a man who appeared to be acting as security guard (Black male with glasses). I believe he was not staff as they were inside. Even if he was staff or manager he cannot racially profile me like this. I will still make a complaint.
?He did not ask how he could help; instead, he physically blocked my entry & stared at me with extreme aggression. When I explained I wanted to speak to staff about work, he dismissively snapped'no job' & gestured for me to leave while continuing to behave in a threatening, hostile manner.
?I felt clearly profiled & targeted because of my appearance as a South Asian Muslim man. It is unacceptable for a business in Côte-des-Neiges, a inclusive neighborhood , to allow individuals to act as'gatekeepers' who use intimidation to keep certain people out. I am taking formal action with the Quebec Human Rights Commission. I strongly advise others who value equality & safety to avoid this establishment.

This was a nice discovery! I had walked by it many times but finally went in to give it a try. It's a nice little place with an upstairs & downstairs portion. They most likely open up the lower section when it gets full upstairs. They have a good selection of beers on tap & can make you any kind of liquor drinking they have the ingredients. The staff was friendly too. Nice little deck outside if you don't mind the traffic on Cote des Neiges. 👍😎

Good service, the staff was friendly & professional. Prices were ok for the beers, & particularly interesting on event nights.

Tiny terrasse, close to Côte-des-neiges street, so very noisy (3-4 fire trucks, 2-3 ambulances, & big trucks). A lot of people smoking cigarettes right besides also, less than 1m away.

No food is served, but you can bring your own to eat there.

Un chouette pub situé à Côte des neiges avec de bons choix de bieres; je suis tombé en amour avec la petite terrasse qui donne sur la rue Côte des neiges 😊. Je recommande vivement!
