Hotel dining is usually as predictable as a rainy Tuesday in the Cotswolds. You go in expecting'very okay' food, & at La Palma, that's exactly what you get. It's solid, dependable, & won't leave you questioning your life choices. But the real reason to go isn't the menu-it's the marvelous incompetence of the bar.
?I happen to like Port. It's the drink of kings, retired colonels, & people who have given up on the idea of waking up without a headache. I saw a Port-based cocktail on the menu &, using the flawless logic of a man who knows what he wants, I assumed that if they had it in a cocktail, they had it in a bottle. So, I asked for a Port.
?
?The bartender, however, clearly decided that my request was far too simple. In a magnificent display of linguistic confusion, he didn't bring me a glass of fortified wine; he brought me a Porto Sour.
?Normally, when a man asks for a drink & receives a science experiment in a glass, there is a scene. But this... this was different. It was the'best mistake ever.' It was as if the bartender had looked into my soul & realized I didn't actually want what I'd asked for. It was so good, in fact, that I immediately ordered another one.
So ?if you are in Montreal for business & need to impress someone without the risk of a disastrous meal, La Palma is a safe bet. But my advice? Don't bother with the menu. Just go to the bar, look confused, & hope the bartender makes another'mistake.'
Our bartender was Amy & she was very good. Very professional she answered everything we could ever ask & beyond. Would greatly recommend her as your server :)
As a person who's worked in the customer service industry for years, I really appreciate the incredible amounts of patience, care, & interest they show their every single customer. I've been at La Palma twice & both times I receive amazing food & drink recommendations from the staff who have taken the time to learn everything about their products & recommend items they personally believe in. Not only will I be coming back to this bar, I will be coming back to this hotel because of the incredible staff & quality of food/drinks at this bar.
I have stayed at the AC Marriott downtown Montréal over many years. I frequent the lounge bar, & I must say that the staff is exemplary in their service & knowledge of cocktails. I am a Tanqueray dirty martini afficionado, & it is always consistent & presented perfectly chilled. Dinner was the tuna steak. Beautiful presentation, perfectly cooked, & the portion was just right. I enjoyed the mango cheesecake for dessert. In all, I highly recommend the European flavor of the hotel & the congenial staff.
Spent a delightful evening with Theo at the bar with beautiful music & perfect cocktails!
Or dining experience at this restaurant was bad right from the start. We had a group reservation for 14 people. When we showed up, they said they didn't have it. Luckily, restaurant was almost empty (this was a Friday night) so we were seated anyway. When came time to order, I ordered the bavette. The waiter had to go check with the kitchen if they had it. The first three people in our group ordered meat dishes. & after that, they were out of meat. Early on a Friday night, they were out... They forgot to bring an appetizer, didn't ask if we needed another glass of wine. Waiters were spending time chatting with eachother in the other room near the bar... Just very average all night long. & then, when it came time to pay, they told us they were adding an 18% service charge because of the size of the group. That was stated on the menu so I guess they're allowed... But after such appalling service, to be charged that much left a bitter taste in my mouth. I felt in an episode of Fawlty towers.
