Kiku Montreal Restaurant: Menu, Reviews & Reserve (2026)
JapaneseSushiFusionAsianCatering

Thy "Liem" Tran and Thinh Pham, better known as the one and only "Sushiman," have owned the restaurant since 2003. With their partner from Mikado Laurier going into semi-retirement, the timing was right to carve a new identity. All of the Mikado Monkland staples customers have grown to love and became loyal allies in our adventure. Through the years, Sushiman and his team have introduced some new sushi creations to go along with such favorites as the sushi pizza, salmon tartar, ebi gyoza, chicken/salmon/steak/shrimp teriyaki and rolls like the Happy, Relax, NDG, R-8, Paradise and Hampstead.

Japanese cuisine is an art in which aesthetics stem from product freshness and quality where preparation is as critical as presentation. The dishes must be pleasing both to the palate and the eye, making Japanese cuisine a truly sensual and sensory experience.

Review Summary

Overall, Kiku gets high marks for fresh, flavorful sushi with beautiful presentation and a welcoming, cozy atmosphere, with notes of attentive service and good value for the price. The menu is praised for variety, including favorites like the NDG roll and other classics, and many diners rave about the specials and the balance between tradition and creativity. Some experiences are less positive, including a report of insects found in the rice, a takeout order that fell short with similar California roll flavors and partially cooked sashimi, and concerns about value when the quality did not meet expectations. There are hints of upcoming changes with new ownership and new items, while others nevertheless say Kiku remains a standout and worth returning to for sushi lovers.

I am someone who eats & prepares sushi often. I decided to try Kiku while taking a walk on Monkland as other restaurants are closed on a Monday. To my surprise the prices on the outside display did not match the prices on the menu. I did mention this to the waitress. I ordered the combo platter with sushi, sashimi & maki. Yes I asked not to have shrimp or tamago. Received 2 very basic rolls...4 hosomakis to my surprise. Sushi & sashimi was cut so thin & small. Only 4 varieties of fish for a 28 piece platter.
