I recently had the pleasure of dining at Gandhi Restaurant in Montreal's Old Port, & it was a truly memorable experience-especially since I brought my little cousins along, & it was their first time trying Indian cuisine. The restaurant offers a perfect blend of traditional Indian flavors with the charming atmosphere of the Old Port, making it ideal for both casual dining & special occasions.
From the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted by an inviting, warm ambiance that made us feel right at home. It felt like the kind of place where you could enjoy a comforting meal or celebrate a special moment, & it definitely added to the overall experience.
I started my meal with a crisp glass of Chardonnay, which was the perfect companion to the rich & aromatic spices that followed. To kick things off, we tried the Papadam-an irresistible, crispy lentil wafer served with three vibrant sauces: mint, tamarind, & mango chutney. Each sauce offered a unique balance of tangy sweetness that elevated the papadam, making it a delightful palate cleanser that melted in my mouth with every bite.
For appetizers, I went with a selection of traditional favorites, & each dish was nothing short of fantastic. The Chicken Tikka was tender, with a smoky, roasted flavor, & the marinated chicken was seasoned to perfection. The Onion Bhajee, fried in Indian butter, was crispy & rich, with just the right touch of sweetness from the onions. The Samosa had a flavorful vegetable filling, & the Pakora-seasoned vegetable fritters-was crunchy on the outside & soft on the inside, with a well-balanced spice profile.
When it came time for the main course, I decided to let the waiter surprise me with a variety of dishes to truly experience the diversity of Indian cuisine. The Mixed Vegetable Bhajee was a refreshing, light vegetarian dish with a wonderful combination of fresh vegetables & a perfect mix of spices. The Chicken Tikka Masala, a classic favorite, was comforting & creamy, with perfectly cooked chicken bathed in a rich, flavorful sauce.
However, it was the Shrimp Bhuna & Lamb Dhansak that truly left an impression. The Shrimp Bhuna had a subtle, yet satisfying heat, with shrimp cooked to perfection in a rich curry sauce full of layers of flavor. But the Lamb Dhansak… wow. That dish was the real standout for me. The lamb was so tender it practically melted in my mouth, & the curry itself had a perfect balance of sweetness & tanginess, with lentils & spices providing depth without overwhelming the palate.
What made this experience even more special was seeing my cousins-who were trying Indian food for the first time-so excited by the new flavors. Gandhi Restaurant not only gave us a chance to explore incredible dishes, but it also made us feel like we were sharing something truly special together.
Overall, Gandhi Restaurant delivers an exceptional dining experience, with high-quality food, attentive service, & authentic flavors. The balance of heat, sweetness, & richness in every dish is remarkable. Whether you're a seasoned lover of Indian cuisine or someone new to it (like my cousins), this restaurant offers a fantastic opportunity to dive into the vibrant world of Indian food in such an inviting setting.

Had an amazing experience at Gandhi! The butter chicken & chicken tikka masala were rich, flavorful, & perfectly spiced. The naan was warm, soft, & paired beautifully with the delicious dipping sauce. To top it off, the Kingfisher beer was a refreshing complement to the meal. The service was exceptionally friendly & impressively quick, making the entire experience even better. Highly recommend for a great Indian dining experience in Montreal.

One of the most over-priced & disappointing Indian restaurant I have been in a long time. The vegetable Biryani was just plain rice with peas, absolutely no aroma whatsoever!
The chicken Karahi was a catastrophy! They should visit Karahi Boys in Toronto to know what it should look & taste like.
Small portions, tasteless & flavorless food. The only good thing was that everything was at least hot.
& then was the Aloo Matar, it was acceptable at best.
Wouldn't recommend to anyone looking for authentic South Asian cuisine.
We chose to dine here as it was close to the Montreal Museum of Archaeology & History & it was on the way back to the Hotel that we were staying at. Seeing an Indian restaurant tugged at our heartstrings & the menu beckoned us to walk in. The lone gentleman doing duty greeted us warmly & promptly served us a papad each with three chutneys, each of which were good. The rest of the food, however, didn't quite live up to the same standards. We ordered the following: 1. Agneau (Lamb) Korahi 2. Poulet (Chicken) Tikka Rejalla 3. Naan à l'Ail (Garlic) 4. Biryani au Poulet Although we were super-hungry having spent a good 3 hrs exploring the museum, we left the restaurant feeling not quite satisfied, either with the portion sizes, nor with the taste.
Chicken in the butter chicken dish was overcooked & dry, & the potatoes were undercooked so they were slightly crunchy. The samosas were undercooked & doughy. The place is cute, the servers were pleasant & didn't rush us at the end of the meal.
This is a very good Indian restaurant. The atmosphere is relaxing & the tables nicely set. We enjoyed the beef somosas; so crispy & the dough was nice & light. Chicken korma & Naan were very good as well. Would go back.

we had such a great time at this restaurant! Farook & staff were so lovely -- very hospitable/family style. We had a delicious daal, naans, chicken kabob, & saag paneer. Enjoyed & would go back!
We were there in July 2024. The service was excellent. Wait staff was attentive, friendly. The food was very tasty & full of flavor. We all enjoyed our dishes. I forgot the names of the dishes we had because I don't often eat at Indian restaurants ( because there aren't any near where I live) My brother-in-law had a beef dish that was as flavorful as it was spicy. Beef biryani, I think. Yum! I had a butter chicken & we also ordered naan & a Bhaji. Everything was delicious & full of flavor. My daughter will be visiting Montréal in September & i have recommended this restaurant to her.
I went last week with my family & cousins. We had great time. Very family friendly restaurants, food was amazing, & staffs were great. We took butter chicken (10/10), mix ghandi plates (10/10) & tikka masala (10/10). dessert were good (8/10). Overall I highly recommend to everyone that goes to old port to experience 5stars service.

We were 15 people & it was my son birthday. I recommend Butter chicken ,Chicken Korai,Poulet Tikka & Nan Service was excellent as well, everything came fast & we enjoyed the food & our time!!
A great find on our first night in Montreal. Located on the gorgeous St Paul Street, the restaurant has a lovely feel, welcoming & friendly host & servers, & excellent food. We enjoyed a simple samosa entree followed by tandoori chicken & lamb korma. Great flavour, very decent portions - was more than enough for 2 pax. Highly recommend & having recently been in India, the food is authentic & reflective of Northern Indian cuisine. Thank you for having us!
The service was excellent & the staff was very attentive . The food was delicious we ordered chicken masala, lamb Tikka, & the vegetarian cauliflower dish. 😋😋😋
I had the chicken bhuna cari & mixed vegetable bajee with Palau rice in a beautiful & I can't to go back. If you like authentic Indian in a high end restaurant with a nice view & lot of privacy, this is the place. Thank you chef Ali!

I had the chicken cari & it came with a basmati rice & I was shocked by how tasty it was. By far the best elegant Indian restaurant in Montreal. AMAZING!!!!
During our visit to Restaurant Gandhi, we sampled the Chicken Tikka, Veg Rogan, & Veg Biryani. The overall experience was a mixed bag. The Chicken Tikka had a nice smoky flavor & was well-cooked, but it lacked the vibrant seasoning typically expected from this dish. It felt a bit underwhelming in terms of spices. The Veg Rogan was flavorful with a rich, aromatic gravy. The vegetables were cooked perfectly, retaining a slight crunch which added to the texture. The portion size was generous & satisfying. The Veg Biryani was decent, with fragrant rice & a good mix of vegetables. While it was enjoyable, it could have used a bit more seasoning to bring out the full array of spices that a biryani is known for. Service was excellent, with attentive & friendly staff who made sure we had everything we needed. The ambiance was cozy & inviting, making it a pleasant place to dine. Overall, Restaurant Gandhi offers a reasonable dining experience.
Amazing restaurant - aroma of spices fills the air, tantalizing your senses & preparing you for an unforgettable culinary journey. Each dish is a masterpiece, bursting with authentic flavors & made with the freshest ingredients. Whether you're craving a flaky, mouth watering garlic naan or the creamy richness of butter chicken, every bite is a symphony of taste.
