Review Summary

Reviews position Fami Li as a reliable go-to for regular Chinese eats in Villeray, with favorites like chop suey, fried rice, spareribs, egg rolls, wonton soup and beef with broccoli, and the Diner Deluxe for two is a common order. Portions are a mixed bag, sometimes generous but other times small for the price, with beef and broccoli sometimes short on beef. Some say there should be no extra charge for changing items within the same combo group, and others compare to places with different pricing and portions. Prices are generally seen as good value and the food is often ready quickly, though pineapple chicken is sometimes reported as mostly bread with little chicken. Egg rolls are praised as among the best in years and the service is fast and friendly, with on site dining available and quality described as consistently good over time. Overall experiences vary, with some loyal customers continuing to return for taste and value while others feel the portions and pricing don't meet expectations.

Not to many Mom & Pop Chinese restaurants left in the Villeray area. This is my go to place for regular Chinese food.(Chop Suey, Fried Rice, Spareribs, Egg roll, & Won-ton soup, & why not, Beef & Broccoli) The' Diner Deluxe' for two is what I usually order. Portions should be of equal sizes, I find some portions sizes to be small for 2 people, like their beef & broccoli,'where's the beef'? There should be no extra charge for changing items, as long as you are ordering food in the same combo group section, like at Fu-Lams on Jean-Talon east, where their portions are very generous.

To the owners of FamiLi, if you continue to penny pinch your customers with high prices, & small portions, you will not get my business anymore. Stop being cheap.

All in all, I give this Chinese Restaurant in Villeray a score of 6/10.

I've been ordering here for 4-5 years now & it always hits the spot. In a few dozen orders over the years, I've never had any bad surprises (taste, freshness, etc.)

To make one thing clear though, this is a very specific kind of "chinese" food - very americanized, 70's suburban strip mall. Some of the menu items should give it away (hot dogs in honey garlic sauce, beef macaroni..). Is it an authentic Chinese menu or fine dining? No. However, if you're looking for fried rice, classic egg rolls, bright red pineapple chicken, etc. then this really hits the spot. The won ton is very very doughy but I kind of like it this way. I also appreciate authentic regional Chinese cuisines, but I know what I'm getting when I order here so I'm not comparing the two.

Sure, they're cash only. Not the end of the world for me. When you order, they let you know so it's not a surprise. The prices are pretty low for the amount of food you get, & delivery is pretty quick & free. Can't complain.

This is a perhaps dated, old-school americanized Chinese restaurant in a quickly gentrifying neighbourhood. I think it's a staple & hope it sticks around some more.

Food was mediocre at best; my room temperature fried rice smelled like it had been left out a bit too long (within a minute later I heard another customer complain about exactly the same issue), the pineapple chicken was like a game of trying to find the chicken in all that dough. The wonton soup was as disappointing: again too doughy & not enough filling. My friend & I ended up leaving almost half of the food behind (we were forcing ourselves to eat because we hate wasting) & swore never to return there. A family of 3 walked in & I caught the eyes of the daughters & signaled them to not eat there; the girls immediately dragged their mom out & thanked me. Here's another tip: if you walk into a Chinese restaurant & they don't have chopsticks, leave immediately.
