Review Summary

Dondonya is widely regarded as a charming, cozy hole-in-the-wall in Montreal that offers authentic, flavorful Asian comfort food at an excellent value. Many patrons praise the generous portion sizes and consistent quality of popular dishes like the gyudon, tonkatsu, and yam fries, noting that the restaurant provides an intimate and welcoming atmosphere. While the space is notably small and can get crowded during peak hours, most diners find the tight seating adds to the establishment's unique, homey character. Although the service is frequently described as friendly and efficient, some reviewers have expressed concerns regarding the cleanliness of the facilities and occasional inconsistencies in food preparation, but overall, it remains a highly recommended spot for those seeking delicious, budget-friendly meals in the downtown area.

Super yummy, great atmosphere, & kind workers! I especially recommend the tonkatsu & curry katsu. It's unpretentious & cozy, a perfect spot for lunch with a friend, or on your own.

Only thing is that I could see clean freaks being a little put-off by this place, as the more eccentric decor lended itself to accumulating quite a bit of dust, especially by the window. It never bothered me, though, since the food is spectacular.

Great service & affordable. One of my favourite katsu places by far & portions are very reasonable

Not authentic. Curry is water down & lacks of favour. The katsu's batter is all wet & not cripsy, they falls straight off the pork... Seems like they just pan fried it instead of traditional way deep fried. don't recommend.

Chashu don: perfectly balanced bowl of tender meat, juicy egg, & crispy vegetables. Simple, but sometimes that's all you need! Curry katsu: curry was alright. Not much to say but the rest was great!

Small & cozy space to enjoy very solid japanese staples. Had such a serene time on a wednesday evening chilling with friends in an intimate space. Don't get me wrong though, the place could be severely packed from the limited space, but as long as you pick a calmer time, it's great or they'll try to accomodate you as soon as possible anyway. Food was good, fairly pricy, but not as much as Mai Sri's next door if you're looking for the same quality, just not the same cuisine. Just quality comfy japanese experience. 02/10/2024 Got chicken katsu; 19.84$ with taxes & tips.

I've tried katsus at several restaurants, & this one is really bland. It's crispy with a large amount of rice & a nice portion of vegetables, but it really needs salt as an optional add-on, especially for the curry sauce & the bland beef. The atmosphere is cozy & nice, despite the heavy smell of fumes.

The pork belly (chashu don) was absolutely amazing. Highly recommend it. The pancake is top notch. Tonkatsu curry was good but the curry flavourless. The Katsu itself was awesome

Very delicious food- we got the gyoza, curry tonkatsu, classic katsu & both miso & udon noodle soup. All was amazing. Super cute hole in the wall place. We would definitely return if back in the area.

Cute & cozy spot with tasty food! Took a group of six here for a friends' meetup & was looking for a casual place with delicious food that's not bougie or expensive. Our group tried a number of different dishes including the katsu & a number of appies including miso soups, gyozas, spicy cucumbers, & the deep fried yam. Everyone had a great time while eating a tasty meal. Thank you for accommodating us in your small space! The staff stayed late for us to finish our meal too 🙏🏻 Do note that a lot of the items on the menu are fried; if you're not okay with that, maybe take a second look at the menu.
