Review Summary

Chow's reviews show a mix of experiences, with some patrons saying quality has slipped to merely passable except for a tangy sour and spicy soup that stood out, while others describe a thick, overly vinegared profile lacking expected ingredients and express disappointment about not returning; on the other hand, many praise good tasting food at affordable prices, friendly service, and reliable takeout with generous portions and hot, fresh meals and fast online ordering; several comments note that the dining room and buffet have not reopened, leaving takeout as the main option, and a last minute order was handled with kindness and produced a plentiful and delicious two person dinner including chow mein; a common sentiment is that Chow's remains a classic Montreal area Chinese option worth supporting and that the chow mein is especially favored, though some regulars miss dining in and the buffet which were once available; overall the restaurant is seen as dependable for takeout and traditional dishes at good value, with experience depending on whether dine-in is possible.

We live in Dorval for over 40 years & have visited Chows at the self-serve Restaurant & ordered take-out food for several times. Today I have to write this review to warn other possible customers of how this establishment's food quality has deteriorated over the past months! Maybe there's another or new cook in the kitchen, who has been instructed to save as much money on the various ingrediences of their menu offerings. They may pass in an old age home or a hospital setting, where food is free & nobody complains - but not on paying customers - who know the difference between good Chinese food & unappetizing left-overs!
As a starter I have no complaints for the timely delivery after we ordered early in the afternoon for an evening delivery. But the food quality was much less than what we expected! Mushroom fried rice did hardly contain any mushroom at all! Then we tried the Hunan beef that was price at $17.75! There were some sliced beef strips with a huge amount of sliced onions on a brown sauce mix. Next was the Kung Poo shrimps. The 4-1/2' dia. x 3-1/2' high plastic container contained exactly 5 medium-sized shrimps & the rest was again all sliced onions & another thick brown & unappetizing sauce. I just bought an entire bag (400 grams) of larger shrimps from a delicatessen store for $12.00 that contained several times the quantity of 5-only shrimps!! & if you like onions - you can buy several bags from Maxi for less than Chows $17.25 offering. At the end a comment about the ordered egg rolls: I like them if they are crispy - but what we received was mushy & tasteless! The entire order w/ tax was close to $70.00 & went mostly to the garbage can!
We called Chow's order desk - but they had nothing to offer in compensation or solution. They basically don't care! & in the process lost us as a customer!!!!

Hadn't eaten there in a really long time & I went back lately. Still pretty good. It's still really surprisingly the same if you have a craving for some good old Chinese food in all the typical takeout or buffet food. Typical Chinese food that everyone's used to the egg rolls are awesome. Everything is good except maybe the chicken soup guy. Some of that great. It was a bit hard. We ordered it once. It was a great ordered it once. It was really terrible. Everything else was good. We had like a dinner with multiple items & we even added more & everything was good except for them. Like I said, chicken soup guy & I don't know the first time this chicken soupai was great. The second time the chicken soup guy was hard like rock & it was not edible. It's a little bit pricey but I mean when is Chinese food not expensive right? So I would say just order. It's been awhile. You've been there the craving Chinese food, the egg rolls, the chicken fried rice. Things like that are awesome. The egg rolls are really good. The chicken fried rice is really good. The pineapple chicken is really good. The chicken chow mein is very good & the garlic spare ribs are awesome but anyways I would say go try it get out of the house. It's been awhile since you've had it. Go try it. You have the craving for Chinese food. This will definitely get your craving to go away. Order some sauces. Don't forget the OD beef macaroni is very good too. & yeah everything is good except the chicken sugai so order call me. She's the owner there. She'll help you & write a review. It's indoor valve or Val circle. If you go to dorval circle, just take doraville avenue South & it's going to be on your left on the east side of the doraville avenue right across from the Maxi of the Walmart so you can't miss it. Go get it something there. It's worth it. Enjoy
