Chez Mère Grand is described as a cozy, welcoming cafe in Old Montreal with excellent coffee and freshly baked pastries, with croissants, chocolatines, and lavender scone highlighted by many visitors. Friendly staff and a charming vibe make it a reliable spot for a morning coffee or a leisurely bite. Several reviews note a warm Parisian inspired atmosphere and in house baking, and the location near the lake and the Old Port is frequently praised. Some comments mention occasional busy times, mixed experiences with staff, and practical details such as cash payments and limited vegan or gluten free options. Overall, the place comes across as a beloved local gem with high quality coffee and pastries and a homey feel that invites return visits.
Chez Mère Grand is the kind of coffee shop you stumble into once & immediately vow to return.
The space itself is very cozy & offers a nice escape from the busy bustling streets outside. The baristas are genuinely knowledgeable & incredibly friendly. & the pastries? Made fresh in house daily & literally so so good. We were especially fond of the croissants & lavender & apricot scones, which struck a perfect balance of delicate flavor & melt-in-your-mouth texture.
Literally we loved this Cafe so much that we ended up visiting every single day we were in Montreal. Overall, this place is a true gem that we highly, highly recommend.
You must visit this exceptional place. If you are staying in the Old Port area, make it your own: It's several blocks up from the Clocktower Quai. You will feel like family, &--more soon--revel in the deliciousness. If you're not staying nearby, it's worth special trips. The pastries & sandwiches are out of this world--lavender scone, the best ever. Super high-quality condiments, drink mixes, & sweeteners are available. The ambiance is perfectly old-world charming. The owner & staff are the best. Can't give a high enough rating--thank you, all!

Eating breakfast & having our coffee here (3/30/2025) & this little café is absolutely exquisite.
For drinks, I had an iced latte with maple syrup & my husband had a long espresso. Both were excellent. My husband enjoyed that the espress was quite strong, & my latte had an excellent flavor.
For food we had ham & cheese croissants, I had a bostock, & my husband had a lavender scone. Again, everything was scrumptious! The ham & cheese croissants (homemade pastry at the café) were a revelation, & my bostock was the best sweet pastry I've had in a very long time. The lavender scone was amazing, with a lovely lavender scent that didn't become a soapy taste on the palate.
The ambience is lovely, with an old-fashioned vibe & an open bakery. The smells of the fresh baked goods wafts over you enticingly as soon as you open the door
To boot, the owner/proprietor is an absolute gem of a human! Funny, personable, helpful, & eager to provide excellent service.
Best coffee shop in Montreal!! Great coffee & food! Roman the owner gives excellent service, personable, & really fun to talk with! The lavender London fog & croissants are must trys!
Delicious croissants & wonderfully warm service. The owner was very sweet with my little ones & makes a superb lavender latte 👌🏽 We spent two days in Montreal & ate breakfast here both mornings because it was that incredible! Would highly recommend stopping by if in the area.
Partially eaten scone is proof we could help but scarf down the best croissants I've ever had an a delightful lavender scone. Cortado was smooth & perfectly balanced, & Romain has incredible vibes - it's like walking into the cafe of an old friend who became 10x too cool to know you but is still nice to you because they're just that chill of a person.

The cafe was across from our hotel & we were so happy that we stumbled upon it our first morning. The cafe is adorable & so inviting. The food was amazing. The drinks even better. The gentleman work possibly the owner was friendly & helpful with suggestions. I loved the London Fog with lavender. Should seek out if in the area.
Super cute cafe with a very friendly owner. Everything on the menu is good, but especially the lavender matcha. Google hours seem to be a bit inaccurate, though.
Cute cafe with the patisseries. We ordered ice matcha with lavender syrup & another one with maple syrup. The lavender one is aromatic. Both are nice but the sense of matcha is not that strong. The croissant with almond cream & apricot jam is so tasty. The outdoor seats are so chill, good for sitting & sipping.
Such a cute spot that's easy to access. Very clean & a good vibe - small seating areas but comfortable & very quaint. We were warmly greeted & helped when we walked in. The person at the counter took his time with us & made us feel liked valued customers, even though it was our first time in the cafe. The food & drinks were delicious! We had the matcha latte with almond milk & lavender syrup, the croissant sandwich, grilled cheese & the cheddar scone. We also received some of the peach ginger iced tea that was super refreshing. We'd come back & definitely recommend this little spot 🙂

A charming cafe with great food & lovely service. The lavender scone was particularly good. We also got the matcha oat milk latte with lavender syrup which was one of the best matcha lattes I've had in a while. Barista was welcoming & thoughtful & I also love the plates they use.
The London fog with lavender was outstanding. Great coffee although no pour over or bulletproof but this is a traditional French cafe so I wouldn't expect that. The barista was great & he makes the best hot chocolate in town!
