Hidden in the rear of Waldman's fish market is a hidden gem. With a few tables to eat at, this Hungarian restaurant serves all the delights. From Cucumber & Beet salads to Veal Paprikash & Beef Goulash, all is made to order.
The menu is small. Explanations of the dishes are clear.
If you are in the area & are looking for something new, different, & delicious, this is the place to stop.
Chez Anna pushes generous portions hard. Fish & chips come stacked: large fillets, light batter, & their battered fries hit the same crisp-satisfying note. The fish is fresh, which shows in both texture & flavor, & makes sense given the place doubles as a fish shop.
There is a strong Hungarian thread in the menu. Hearty stews, comforting sides, & seasoning profiles you don't often see in similar casual spots. That mix of a fish counter with Central European comfort food makes the place feel distinct.
Tucked away & easy to overlook, it fits the hidden gem label. Unpretentious, good value, & memorable for both portion size & the unexpected range of dishes.
A small diamond in the ruff hidden in the back of the small grocery store Étoile Waldmans, those who like homemade Hungarian schnitzels , spetzel & goulash, will like Chez Anna, also fish specials & daily specials everyday. Fast ,warm & friendly. Food is made to order & delicious.
I'll start with the phone call for making the reservation. What Anna told me describes the restaurant perfectly:'we got good food & we got alcohol. The only thing you need to bring is your appetite'
You want good authentic hungarian food? That is your spot. Most generous portions I have seen in MTL for a while!
So far you understand you come to a mom-&-pops type restaurant, you'll have a great time. The menu is one page, & each meal they make they make well!!
Anna is a great host & Lili was a very good waitress, it felt like we were at home.
We took the salads, soups & the crepe appetizer. The crepe is like nothijg you had before, definitely would recommend as an introduction to hungarian food.
Then the schnitzel, cordon bleu & rabbit for main dishes. All of them delicious.
The desserts are either an apple or cherry strudel. both are equally delicious! Anna really knows her craft.
I cannot believe it is still a hidden gem, you must visit!
It's exactly like visiting your grandmas house but in a grocery store setting! We got big glasses of wine on arrival & ordered the pork schnitzel which was absolutely divine! So happy we found this hidden spot! Best schnitzel in town ♥️
What a great hidden gem- so hard to spot, we almost thought it didn't exist! Such a wonderful home cooked meal quality. The lamb goulash was tender & just what was needed on a cold winter night. Excellent & friendly service! Can't wait to go back & try more
A small hidden gem in a small grocery store! Delicious! We took the cordon bleu & the schnitzel with the crepe as a starter. It was a very nice experience, specially dining in a supermarket! We will definitely come back!
Excellent cuisine. A true hidden gem to say the least. It is inside the Waldmans' on St Laurent blvd near Rachel. Looks like a fruit & veg depanneur from the outside. Don't let that away you. Nice little tables set up.in the back. Worth the search. Anna cooks everything from scratch. So fresh & tasty! An the apple strudel!!!! Delicious Will definitely return. They have take out also. You have to try it.
