Chez Anna pushes generous portions hard. Fish & chips come stacked: large fillets, light batter, & their battered fries hit the same crisp-satisfying note. The fish is fresh, which shows in both texture & flavor, & makes sense given the place doubles as a fish shop.
There is a strong Hungarian thread in the menu. Hearty stews, comforting sides, & seasoning profiles you don't often see in similar casual spots. That mix of a fish counter with Central European comfort food makes the place feel distinct.
Tucked away & easy to overlook, it fits the hidden gem label. Unpretentious, good value, & memorable for both portion size & the unexpected range of dishes.
Ambiance chaleureuse
Cuisine familiale simple,
Schnitzel was amazing. Family-owned resto, although service was a bit slow. Restaurant is inside a grocery, so it is not obvious for passer-by.
Got a Hungarian Auntie? If not, no worries - head over to Chez Anna! It's your go-to spot for that warm, homemade feel, just like visiting a friendly auntie's kitchen. The atmosphere is genuine & cozy, making it a perfect place to relax. While the menu isn't huge, every dish is worth the trip, & you're bound to run into plenty of locals, adding to the authentic vibe.
My first time at this place, Great place for a casual meal & the best schnitzel & apple strudel I have tasted in the city. Looking forward to bring my entire family here!!!
I really wanted to like this place because of the amazing reviews, but we just weren't impressed. Yes it's home style food, but it wasn't even salted & there was hardly any flavor. We had a cucumber salad, paprika chicken, & the stuffed crepe. The cucumber salad was the best thing we had but the other two dishes were very meh.
We love trying new cuisines from different countries & I'm eastern european so I know these kinds of comfort foods, but this place just didn't do it for us.
Service was fine, lady was nice, & I liked the casual feel of the seating.
Super delicious meal. It's home made, hearty & warm. Highly recommend this place for a good meal.
This was our first time at Chez Anna, & we were so impressed! The food was incredibly fresh, full of flavor, & had that comforting, home-cooked taste that's hard to find at restaurants. You can tell everything is prepared with care. The staff at Chez Anna were warm, accommodating, & genuinely friendly, which made us feel right at home.
My brother-in-law, who's a regular, brought us here while we were visiting from out of town, & now we understand why he loves it so much. The atmosphere is cozy & welcoming-perfect for sharing a meal with family. Chez Anna is the kind of place you instantly want to come back to. We'll definitely be making this a must-stop every time we're in town!
Wow. Chez Anna's is the real deal. The food here is next-level, pure comfort, pure flavour, pure love. It honestly feels like walking into someone's home & being served the kind of Hungarian cooking that you can't find anywhere else in Montreal.
Every dish was bursting with flavor, rich, hearty, & made from scratch. You can taste the care in every bite. It's the kind of food that makes you slow down & just enjoy the moment.
On top of that, Anna makes you feel like family the second you walk in. Warm, welcoming, & genuine, it's the perfect mix with the unbelievable food.
If you want something authentic, home-cooked, & unforgettable, Chez Anna's on St. Lawrence is a must.
Plus Anna has to be the sweetest person around!
This is definitely a place that I can see why it's easy to overlook, but it shouldn't be overlooked. The schnitzel was cooked to perfection, the spatzle was very nicely done, & the goulash was a celebration of savoury flavour. Also, our service was very attentive.
Excellent food & service. The price of the Schnitzel is high, but then the portion is enormous. Id suggest that they offer different sizes. Id gladly pay $12 - $14 for something half the size.
Absolutely amazing. I hear a lot from the media about Montreal having'2nd most restaurants per street after NY' or whatever. Before Chez Anna, they either fell into one of the two types: either trendy & overpriced, or generic & forgettable. I never encountered a hearty & homey restaurant until this. Clean & homey, amazing service. Great value/price. I would choose this over any other in Montreal, or even in Canada.
Update: 4 years later. Still good as before if not better.
My husband was longing for Hungarian food & we found Chez Anna & thought we would try it. We had Hortobágyi palacsinta, Tejfölös uborkasaláta & csirkepaprikás. It was delicious. Anna was very friendly, what a gem to find. We don't have any Hungarian restraunts in Vancouver, BC anymore so this was such a a delight.
Absolutely delicious! My Hungarian roots (but minimal to no knowledge of said culture) absolutely loved the meal!!!!
The Schnitzel (Becsi szelet) & the cucumber were fantastic. Reminds me of the Hungarian restaurants of old.
