Coming from overseas, I had never tried poutine before, so traveling to Québec made it only a matter of time. While driving through the Cantons-de-l'Est, I stayed one night in Magog & discovered this small roadside spot, Cantine Chez Paul, filled with local customers - always a great sign.
I decided to try the smoked meat poutine & wow, I was not disappointed! Absolutely delicious. The friendly service & the sweet elderly cooks made the experience even more authentic & memorable. A true Québec gem off the beaten path.
Cantine classique comme on les aime ! Ambiance normale, sans prétention, mais un service vraiment chaleureux qui fait la différence.

A tiny little cantine (aptly named) on the Main Street in Magog. Not sure why it is so highly reviewed. Food is basic & underwhelming although portions are huge (if you are into stuffing your face with poutine). We ordered a smoked meat sandwich with fries & a hot dog. Again, nothing to write home about. I guess it is worth a visit because it is such a landmark in Magog with the tourists lined up around the corner (it caught our attention). Prices are quite cheap. It is very small with only a few tables, so take out might be more recommended. Note: they don't take credit cards so bring cash or debit.
Malheureusement avec un nouveau propriétaire, la quantité a diminué un peu mais les prix sont restés les mêmes. Le rapport qualité prix a baissé un peu.

Quelle magnifique découverte que la Cantine Chez Paul ce soir! En entrant, on est immédiatement charmé par l'atmosphère qui nous transporte directement dans le style chaleureux & authentique d'une cantine des années 50. On sent tout de suite que cet endroit est empreint d'une longue tradition & qu'il a une véritable âme, bien loin des chaînes de restauration rapide sans personnalité.
L'accueil a été à l'image des lieux : incroyablement chaleureux & souriant. On se sent immédiatement le bienvenu, comme si on était un habitué de longue date. C'est un plaisir de voir une équipe aussi sympathique & efficace.
& que dire de la nourriture... C'est là que la magie opère. J'ai commandé un burger & des frites, & je peux dire sans hésiter que la qualité était incroyable. Le burger était juteux, savoureux, avec des ingrédients frais & un pain parfait. Chaque bouchée était un délice. Quant aux frites, elles méritent une mention toute spéciale : elles étaient très, très bonnes ! De vraies frites de cantine comme on en rêve.
En plus de cette qualité irréprochable, j'ai été agréablement surpris par les prix, qui sont plus qu'excellents. Le rapport qualité-prix est tout simplement imbattable. J'ai aussi remarqué que l'endroit était très propre, des tables aux comptoirs, ce qui est toujours très apprécié.
En résumé, mon expérience Chez Paul a été un sans-faute. C'est le genre d'établissement qui réchauffe le coeur & régale les papilles. Je le recommande sans la moindre hésitation à quiconque cherche une expérience culinaire authentique, délicieuse & abordable à Magog. J'ai déjà hâte d'y retourner! Un gros 5 étoiles bien mérité.
