Café Castel comes across as a bright, welcoming hub near the McGill area with large windows that lift the mood and a cozy vibe that suits studying or hanging out; the coffee is reliably good and the pastry selection is frequently fresh with crowd favorites like croissants, tiramisu and various loaves, while the ever friendly staff and occasional discounts for students add to the appeal; the space stays open later than many nearby spots and offers a lively, European feel that many visitors enjoy, though busy periods can lead to slower service and occasional lapses in table cleanliness, and a few reviews note temperature swings in the glassy sections and occasional inconsistency in desserts or drinks; overall it remains a popular go-to for a relaxed cafe experience with a strong emphasis on atmosphere and solid coffee.
I truly appreciate the atmosphere of this place - it has the charm of a small, cozy Italian café. My London Fog was delightful, though I found the food to be a bit too oily for my taste. However, my experience was somewhat overshadowed by the service. When I ordered the London Fog, I was informed that it would not be served in a cup to avoid extra cleaning, which I completely understood. The issue arose when I asked a senior staff member, kindly, if it would be possible to clean a table so I could sit with my friends. Instead of a polite response, he waved me off & said, "No, we are only two," before walking away. Thankfully, a younger staff member stepped in & assured me he would take care of it once he finished serving his current customers. While waiting, I overheard the senior staff member complaining to the younger staff about being too busy to accommodate us. The younger staff member reassured him that it wouldn't take long. I must admit, I was disappointed by the interaction. While I understand that staffing can be challenging, especially during busy hours, it seems unwise to have only two staff members available when it's clear there will be high traffic. This left the staff under significant pressure, which ultimately impacted their ability to provide basic customer service, such as keeping tables clean. I hope that, in the future, the senior staff will recognize that maturity & professionalism aren't solely defined by age, but by the way one handles situations & treats others.

Very average food, got the egg croissant & ham & cheese. The croissant itself was good; but the lettuce in the sandwhich is random & didn't pair well for flavour & texture. Flat white was too milky.
So good all the crosonts were amazing including the sandwiches I got a sandwich & butter coroosont highly recommend don't under stand why this place got low rating it is the best I had so far!!!!
J'ai fait un crochet à ce café lors de ma promenade sur le Mont Royal. L'endroit est très joli & lumineux. Parfait pour une pause café !! Par contre, je ne recommande pas pour la nourriture.
We visited this cafe in January 2024. The weather was very cold & the cafe was cozy & warm. The owner was very attentive & nice man. We came back here again in October with warm memories of a huge cake in January, & are happy to visit again. Really cozy cafe in the center of Montreal, with delicious coffee, cake & croissant. Will definitely come back again, your guests from Calgary, Germany & Ukraine ☺️
Super cute little cafe, with a great view & nice lighting. Food & drinks are always on point, & it's calm enough to study but also great for a conversation with friends. Very well located! I recommend when in downtown.
Although the atmosphere was very good, the quality of coffee was horrible! We got a latte & a Mocha, they barely had coffee taste in it, it was like we were having hot milk & milk chocolate! So disappointed! Never go again
The place is constantly crowded, there is no sense of where to go when ordering. Nothing's labeled. The food is borderline decent, but nothing extraordinary. The tables are worn out, the cutlery is dirty. I ordered a plain croissant with ham, cheese, & lettuce. & on another occasion, an egg bagel, which was plain with next to no extra ingredients. They place the sandwiches on a Forman type grill, the presentation is lackluster, I might as well make them at home for I'm paying for. Not to mention the coffee, nearly $4 for low quality coffee, in mugs that spill whenever you drink. I went twice because I was with a group but I would never willingly go again on my own.
Perfect coffee/breakfast place ive ever had in montreal. You can see the view of the montreal streets. I ordered the café mocha & it was perfect. Only bad thing was that 5 drinks, 5 danishes were 60 dollars total with tip. Although its pretty expensive you must try!
I love having cafe latte over there, it is strong, creamy, plus one of their workers if you be lucky & be his shift ,he does a beautiful graphic on lattes that you can enjoy your cold day with a nice coffee!
