Review Summary

Brit & Chips is widely celebrated for serving some of the best fish and chips in Montreal, often noted for its authentic British-style batter, fresh ingredients, and flavorful options like the popular maple-battered fish. While the majority of diners praise the speedy service and welcoming atmosphere, particularly on the outdoor terrace during the summer, some visitors find the indoor seating to be cramped and the food occasionally too greasy or heavy. Consistency in service and oil quality is occasionally questioned, but the establishment remains a frequent recommendation for comfort food seekers who enjoy crispy batter, savory tartar sauce, and a variety of fish choices.

Very atmospheric fish & chips place. The staff are friendly & the maple syrup battered haddock was excellent!

Ordered Haddock Maple Syrup batter. Did not taste the maple syrup at all! & they changed the fries, used to be homefries thicker & sweet. Frozen fries are unappealing! No longer same since new ownership.

One of the things I always try to do is visit a chippy everywhere I go! I've had them almost everywhere I've been. The best ones tend to besmall but with a large fryer. Brit & Chips was no exception. Tables & seats inside are limited, as space is dedicated to producing delicious meals! We almost passed on the place due to lack of seating. Fortunately, one of the wait staff, Daní informed us that they had plenty of outdoor seating. I was dubious at first as the canopy on the outdoor seating area looked like it was designed for sun, not rain! As we'd brought umbrellas, problem solved! We'd dine seni al fresco under a combination of sun shade & umbrellas. The menu is not fancy, fish in various forms, freshly prepared & served hot. My wife & her niece were reticent about trying the maple syrup battered haddock but her boyfriend, being the adventurous type, ordered it with chips. Daní correctly informed us that while one could tell maple syrup was an ingredient, it wasn't sweet like eating pancakes. The rest of us ordered the cod, in burgundy ale batter. To get us started we had a couple of amazing Québec produced bitter beers & a couple of glasses of house wine. My wife commented that the wine was excellent. The food arrived promptly & the presentation was exactly what one would expect from a British style chippy. 2 pieces of crisp golden brown battered fish with a generous helping of crisp chips! The flavour was amazing for both fish & chips. My niece's boyfriend noted that as Danaí had predicted, the maple syrup in the batter helped enhance the flavour of the fish & definitely did not overpower it. Pricing was what one would expect for a quality fish & chip meal, with wine & domestic beer. All in all, a great meal served by the friendly & attentive Danaí in a convivial atmosphere. Definitely a must visit for a chippy aficionado (pun intended)!

Our first night in Montreal was Good Friday & my friend that I was traveling with said that his family always did fish & chips & really wanted to do that for dinner. Upon research, Brit & Chips was the restaurant that kept coming up. We knew since it was Good Friday there might be a wait but we didn't mind. When we got there they said it was 45 mins but we got in a lot quicker than that. We both got the maple battered haddock & it was absolutely delicious. It was just the right fish to batter ratio & it wasn't greasy at all. Wasn't super pricey & we got a lot of food. Will make this a stop again next time I come to Montreal!

Maybe good for some, but the batter was very thick (much thicker than a pogo) & soggy, with a maple syrup note that I personally was a fan of, but my partner was not. The fries were soft & they too had a sweet note which ultimately combined with the batter was too much sugar taste in a main course. The tartare sauce was very nice. We both had the haddock & fries & wished there was some contrast between all the mushy textures.

I loved the different choices of fish & batters. The maple batter was so light & just a tad sweet. Overall the fish, fries & coleslaw were delicious. However the price is pretty high considering the sides aren’t even included.
