Review Summary

Reviewers consistently praise Brit & Chips for an authentic British style fish and chips, with a light golden batter that stays crisp and fish that is tender inside, and hand cut fries that are cooked well. A range of fish options including cod, haddock, salmon, and monthly specials are noted as flavorful, with gluten free batter options available. Tartar sauce, mushy peas, curry sauce, and pickles appear as frequent favorites. Service is described as fast and friendly, with attentive staff and good value, though a few experiences mention uneven service, higher prices, and noise when busy. The venue is seen as convenient for visitors to Montreal, with takeout and outdoor seating options, and many say it is a go to spot for traditional fish and chips. Overall, Brit & Chips is depicted as a reliable destination for hearty comfort food, substantial portions, and a distinctive British style in the city.

A Massive Letdown 0 out of 100 at Brit & Chips
?
?As someone who lived in England for seven years, I have been raving to my wife & kids about the authentic taste of British fish & chips. I've shared so many stories about the crispy batter & fresh fish that we finally decided to visit Brit & Chips to give them a taste of the real thing. Unfortunately, it was a complete disaster.
?The food was, quite frankly, oily crap. It looked like the fish & chips had been fried in old, degraded oil that had turned black, leaving everything looking unappetizing & tasting even worse. In the world of'English style' food, this was a 0 out of 100.
?The only saving grace was the staff. The waiters were very nice & attentive, but when the food is inedible, great customer service simply isn't enough to save the experience. If you are looking for an authentic British chippy experience, this definitely isn't it.

Good fish & chips & dessert the apple fritters best I got so far in my life, moist & bouncy with just the perfect crust around it & it comes with a caramel sauce so good don't forget to add the ice cream help cleanse the palate & go back to the fritters, service friendly & there is an ambiance of music but doesn't prevent you from earring people around your table.

Yeah it's good! But the shrimp popcorn was a joke, such small amount & not worth it at all!!!!! Wish the fish batter stayed crispy! The fries are ight. The coleslaw is amazing! The tartare sauce is good! They have vinegar, mayo & ketchup on the side, thanks !

It has changed since I went 5 years ago. I feel the fries are a little more basic than before, but the fish was still nice & crispy.

Great service, friendly staff, amazing food & drinks.
Despite the sauce on top of fish, it was still crispy. It was amazingly soft inside & goes well with coleslaw.
My server was very sweet & friendly, it was very nice to talk to her.
Definitely will come back if I visit Montreal again.

I used a credit from Passeport MTL & ordered the cod fish & chips, adding a beer on the side. The service was speedy, & the staff were genuinely friendly, & fully bilingual. The food arrived hot, fresh, & delicious. The batter was light, golden, & perfectly crispy, giving way to flaky, tender cod inside. The fries looked like fresh hand-cut potatoes, double-fried to be fluffy on the inside & crisp on the outside. Simple, comforting, & done very well.

Came in on a weekly night & easily found a table.

Tried the fish of the month (sole fish) which was lightly drizzled with sweet soy sauce & comes with kimchi mayo. If I disregard the attempt to add Asian flavours, I would say it's a crunchy & well cooked fish. As an Asian, I would prefer the kimchi mayo to have real kimchi kick so that it can balance the greasiness. The fish my friends ordered was darker than brown (slightly burnt) but the fish itself is ok.

Poutine was good, cheesy & nicely savoury.

I would say this taste pretty much like the ones I had in London 👍🏻

Service was great, the female staff attending to us (sorry didn't catch her name) was attentive & helpful.

Fish was burned. Weird spice in the batter. Oil needed to be changed- even the fries tasted off.

We had a wonderful lunch experience - it truly felt like we were in the Maritimes. The two generous pieces of cod with fries were delicious, & Gabriella, our server, was warm, attentive, & charming. Highly recommend!

Hands down the best fish & chips in downtown Montréal! I've tried almost all their options, & while everything is fresh & tasty, the salmon is by far the best - perfectly crispy on the outside & tender, juicy inside. The batter is light & golden, never greasy, & the fries are perfectly seasoned. The portion size is generous, & everything tastes super fresh.

The atmosphere is cozy & welcoming, & the staff are always friendly & attentive. If you love seafood, this place is a must-visit - I've tried many around the city, & nothing comes close!

This is the Real McCoy, British fish & chips. I ordered the Classic Ale Battered Cod with an extra fillet. Very fresh, hot & tasty. I thought I was on Piccadilly Square. Highly recommend this great little Fish & Chips restaurant. Ask for Alexa because she'll greet you with a great smile & friendly service.

Ordered trio of'morue style poulet chaud sandwich' (special of the month).
Fish was tasty but there was only one small piece - really disappointing for the price $$
The sandwich was mostly two huge slices of thick bread with sauce & green peas.
Fries were delicious & salad was good.

We stopped by this fish & chip shop in Montreal because they offer gluten free battered fish, & it was such a great find. The portions were huge, two big pieces of fish, & you'd never be able to tell the gluten free one from the regular.

The fries were homemade & perfectly done, & both the tartare sauce & curry sauce were spot on. It does get super busy for dinner, so we went right when they opened for lunch, which worked out perfectly. Classic fish & chips done right, with the bonus of being gluten free friendly without sacrificing taste.

I can't sat enough good things about this restaurant. The fish is always cooked perfectly, never soggy, nice & fluffy with just the right amount of crispy batter. The maple syrup batter is a must, & try the mushy peas to go with the crispy fries!

fish n chips here are so good. highly recommend getting extra pickles, i was capable of gobbling them up whole because of how gluttonous i am (it helps cut the heaviness of fried food)

As the name implies, be ready for a fried experience. Fish (cod) was a little overdone for me. Wife loved the kabob
. Guinness 0 was a new.

Basic fish & chips menu... Cod, salmon, haddock, along with a tofu option, a couple chicken options & beef/lamb kabobs. My partner & I both had Cod burgers. The side of chips / fries was a generous portion. We also shared a green salad that was large & tasty with cucumber & tomatoe slices. My 5 stars is based on the staff, taste, & overall value, unrelated to fancy looks. Not fancy here, great little place. The staff was very friendly & watched over us to make sure everything was to our liking. They interacted with each other in a fun manner. Small indoor seating area. They have outdoor seating by the street in the summer. They also do take out.
Our compliments to the cook & servers!

Montreal is not the city to come to for exceptional fish & chips, however, if you happen to find yourself craving it while you're in the city then this is a fine place to tide you over. Though if you're used to great fish n' chips, you'll have to keep looking. Great decor tho!

The tarter sauce was a bit stodgy, the vinegar lacked punch, & the fries were on the mushier side. The fish was cooked fairly well though & the batter they used was inoffensive. It'll be a perfectly palatable meal to most.

I will say our service was quite poor, we had to refill our own glasses with water we brought from a hike on numerous times, the server didn't come by even once. We even had to go to the front & ask for the bill at the end & that was the first we saw the staff after they gave us our food.
