About

Brit & Chips delivers an authentic British-style culinary experience centered on traditional beer-battered fish alongside an inventive array of potato-based classics. The menu showcases diverse catches prepared with house-made batter, frequently paired with distinctive toppings that elevate the standard fare. Beyond the classic cod and haddock, the establishment integrates Quebecois influence by incorporating various poutine styles featuring rich gravies and fresh cheese curds. Diners encounter a focused selection of fried preparations that prioritize crisp, golden textures and high-quality ingredients sourced for consistency. The environment emphasizes a casual, no-nonsense approach to comfort food where the quality of the frying process remains the primary technical focus. Each serving reflects a commitment to the iconic pairing of seafood and potatoes while maintaining a distinct personality through curated flavor combinations that distinguish the brand within the local food landscape.

Review Summary

Brit & Chips is widely considered one of the best spots in Montreal for authentic fish and chips, praised for its fresh, crispy batter and generous portions. Guests frequently highlight the diverse menu options, including unique choices like maple syrup batter, gluten-free alternatives, and various fish types like cod, salmon, and haddock. While many visitors rave about the friendly, efficient staff and cozy atmosphere, some note that the venue can feel cramped during peak hours and that dishes can occasionally lean towards the greasier side. Whether dining on the outdoor terrace or grabbing a quick meal near the Old Port, most patrons enjoy a welcoming experience that pairs well with their selection of British-style sides and beverages.

I went in not knowing if the tofu & chips would be vegan or just vegetarian. I am here to confirm for the vegan community: the battered tofu & fries are vegan, so is the curry sauce. The mushy peas & tartare sauce aren't though. This was a yummy & filling lunch. I recommend getting the irn bru as a pairing :)

I ate here 6 years ago when I was here for a conference. I'm back & this is the first place I went after a long day of flights. If fish & chips are your thing, you won't be disappointed here. Try the fish with the maple batter. It's especially good.

Batter was underdone & soggy, & they used an unconventional seasoning for'British' fish & chips. Fries didn't have much flavor.

I love fish & chips & this place served me one of yhe best ones I ever had. The sole was just delicious & the batter flavor came through witch is rare. Generous amount of crispy fries. The dine in place is small, but cosy & the vibe is great. You know when a place is great when you have regular old costumers leaving nothing on their plates.❤

This was our first visit to Brit & Chips but won't be our last. We had lunch on their terrace. The food was delicious & the lovely weather made terrace dining fabulous. We had fish & chips made with cod……..light batter & delicious fish. Our server was Catherine who was extremely personable & attentive. All in all a great experience.

Will not be ordering again. Ordered 2pc Sole with a gluten-friendly batter (not sure if they have a dedicated fryer for the GF items).

The GF batter is crispy but quite greasy, & the batter to fish ratio seems lopsided (so much batter - chunks with zero fish inside).

The tartare sauce was incredibly salty.

Tastes like the frying oil needs to be changed.

Fries were bland.

Edible but woefully mediocre, especially for $25 a meal. Might be better as a dine-in experience?

Cozy little place with good service & delicious fish & chips. I got the maple syrup battered sole & it was absolutely delicious. I really loved the tartare sauce that came with it as well. The employees were kind & full of smiles. I'll definitely be back to try more :)

Another Montreal spot that cured my GF food grief for the weekend. We ordered one GF fish & chips & one regular. I've tried GF fish & chips in Dublin & Malta (Malta being the best yet) & this spot was up there both of the others. Crispy batter, flavorful & crunchy. Service was great, we were there when a big bus arrived but they got our food out very quick given the busy pace.
