About

Brit & Chips delivers an authentic British-style culinary experience centered on traditional beer-battered fish alongside an inventive array of potato-based classics. The menu showcases diverse catches prepared with house-made batter, frequently paired with distinctive toppings that elevate the standard fare. Beyond the classic cod and haddock, the establishment integrates Quebecois influence by incorporating various poutine styles featuring rich gravies and fresh cheese curds. Diners encounter a focused selection of fried preparations that prioritize crisp, golden textures and high-quality ingredients sourced for consistency. The environment emphasizes a casual, no-nonsense approach to comfort food where the quality of the frying process remains the primary technical focus. Each serving reflects a commitment to the iconic pairing of seafood and potatoes while maintaining a distinct personality through curated flavor combinations that distinguish the brand within the local food landscape.

Review Summary

Brit & Chips is widely celebrated for serving some of the best fish and chips in Montreal, often noted for its authentic British-style batter, fresh ingredients, and flavorful options like the popular maple-battered fish. While the majority of diners praise the speedy service and welcoming atmosphere, particularly on the outdoor terrace during the summer, some visitors find the indoor seating to be cramped and the food occasionally too greasy or heavy. Consistency in service and oil quality is occasionally questioned, but the establishment remains a frequent recommendation for comfort food seekers who enjoy crispy batter, savory tartar sauce, and a variety of fish choices.

Basic fish & chips menu... Cod, salmon, haddock, along with a tofu option, a couple chicken options & beef/lamb kabobs. My partner & I both had Cod burgers. The side of chips / fries was a generous portion. We also shared a green salad that was large & tasty with cucumber & tomatoe slices. My 5 stars is based on the staff, taste, & overall value, unrelated to fancy looks. Not fancy here, great little place. The staff was very friendly & watched over us to make sure everything was to our liking. They interacted with each other in a fun manner. Small indoor seating area. They have outdoor seating by the street in the summer. They also do take out.
Our compliments to the cook & servers!

I've tried fish & chips in London & this place truly matched the deliciousness of what I've eaten in the UK. They even import sodas from there (irn bru & Ben Shaw)! Plus the view is really good & the location isn't swarming with people. After eating peacefully, you can enter the Old Montreal area where's there's a lot more people.

Absolutely recommend!

PS: get the dandelion soda, was really good.

Montreal is not the city to come to for exceptional fish & chips, however, if you happen to find yourself craving it while you're in the city then this is a fine place to tide you over. Though if you're used to great fish n' chips, you'll have to keep looking. Great decor tho!

The tarter sauce was a bit stodgy, the vinegar lacked punch, & the fries were on the mushier side. The fish was cooked fairly well though & the batter they used was inoffensive. It'll be a perfectly palatable meal to most.

I will say our service was quite poor, we had to refill our own glasses with water we brought from a hike on numerous times, the server didn't come by even once. We even had to go to the front & ask for the bill at the end & that was the first we saw the staff after they gave us our food.

Just needed some fish. Had the cod, chips/ fries & mushy peas- never had them before but they were good. Nice little spot for some food. Staff was very nice.
