Small, but the drinks were great, staff was friendly & quick. I loved the little food menu from the place upstairs. The special drinks were amazing & i ordered several. Fast forward to the new location. The bar looks amazing. Lot more open then the old place. The bouncers were friendly & joking with us while we waited for a place. This is where the slight disappointment started. Once seated we waiting almost 30 mins for a server to come see us. People seated after us got served their drinks before the even took our order. In 1 hour we saw our server once. I'll give them that it was a busy evening, but it was irritating. The drinks were ok, I am not sure if they changed the recipe or ingredients since the old location but Le Mal Necessaire tasted a lot different then the old one. Maybe the pineapple was from concentrate? Something didn't taste the same in it. Still good but I'd drop the rating a star of how it used to be. & they don't have the snack menu anymore. SO over all great looking place. But maybe a victim of its own success? I didn't have the rude experience that some seem to speak of but our server took even longer to bring our bill then to take the drinks. another server saw us getting annoyed & came to help us. So service was mixed, drinks were better at the old place. But they layout was great. Good atmosphere. Maybe it was an off day.View more
Was looking for a nice quiet bar - this was not it. I'm sure with friends it would be nice, but not what I was looking foView more
Bar caché très sympathique: bons cocktails & cadre agréable pour un moment entre amis !View more
Hidden bar in downtown montreal, no public signs outside, a bouncer greets you at the entrance. A cocktail drink costs around 20 cad, a pint of beer costs 9 cad. The bar is super classy & the ambiance reflects fancy music & clients.View more
Their new location is incredible. Just helpful advice you need to walk into a building & turn left to get to the front entrance of the bar.View more
Sipping on a cocktail in a trendy new downtown bar. If anyone needs me, I'll be busy pretending I'm a professional taste tester. #VacationLife #ResearchPurposes 🍹View more
Quel plaisir ce bar un peu caché & à l'ambiance parfaite. Peut être que le son est un peu trop fort, mais on a l'habitude à Montréal. L'un de mes endroits favoris de la ville.View more
My favorite bar! Cool atmosphere, very good service & omg, the drinks, sooo good, this is a must go to place!View more
Me & two friends only found this bar late on our last evening before heading home but I'm glad we did. You wouldn't know the bar is there to begin with. There are no signs & it is down a quiet street which I think adds to its speak easy vibe. It has a really chilled out cosy atmosphere with a DJ adding to it with some chilled out music. Our server Morgane was super attentive & helpful. Sat us at a table & we ordered some Old Fashioneds with her recommendation of bourbon. The drinks took a little longer to arrive but the bar was busy & we were happy just chatting. The Old Fashioned was really good! It's a shame we found this bar so late into our trip but I'm glad we found it eventually! Would absolutely return again next time we're in town.View more
My new fav MTL bar. Upscale cocktails with great service. Maybe the best negroni of all time. Not to be missed. Our server Jess was outstanding.View more
Le Mal Nécessaire is an absolute gem! My experience last night was nothing short of amazing. The bartenders here are incredibly passionate about their craft, & it's evident in every drink they prepare. A special shoutout to the bartender Jess, who made our night unforgettable with her humor, kindness, & exceptional service. She really knows how to make guests feel special. The lively environment, complete with a DJ spinning vinyl added to the vibe. This bar has definitely earned a spot in our regular rotation. Highly recommend.View more
This was our first bar in a series that night - & it was the perfect choice! The fantastic interiors, the well-balanced cocktails, the lighting - everything is tailor-made to transport you to the prohibition era! Definitely a must visit.View more
We decided to try this bar out after seeing it on instagram & it was PHENOMENAL. We had so much fun the first night, we came back with more friends the following evening. We loved the ambiance, the music was not so loud that we couldn't have a conversation with each other & the staff were outstanding, they really put on a show! The drinks are on another level - I highly recommend the fruit loop shots. We loved hearing the back stories behind the drinks we ordered & how they came to fruition it was also a treat to get shown the back room that had elements from the former bar location (bar top & tile) under renovation. We will be hitting up mal every time we are in the city & you should too!View more
Cool place that you wouldn't know it existed from the outside of the building as there are no signs. Great cocktails, cool detailed drink menu with lots of explanations to help choose, great music as there was a dj playing, cool vibe. Service seemed to be slow as I only noticed two servers. We sat down at the bar as there were no tables available, enjoyed the drinks while seeing all the bartender magic happening right in front of us. Bartender is great, but someone should be looking over cleaning the bar as the person beside me has spilled his drink, made bar dirty & nobody cleaned it while we were there. Overall good experience & would love to come back.View more
So I was just wandering around old port Montreal & I stumbled upon this cute hidden cocktail bar & I could not have been more welcomed by the Jess the bartender. Her knowledge of the menu & warmness made me feel right at home & part of the family here. Highly recommendView more
First visit to their new space (they just reopened & expanded) & I was blown away. Beautiful, sophisticated design, but still feels intimate & low key. Staff were fun & friendly; drinks were fresh, interesting/unique & stiff. Loved the vibe overall & definitely worth making a detour for - it's a great spot for a date, to hang with friends, or to entertain business colleagues/clients. They've completely upped their game even further & cemented its status as one of the best cocktail bars in the city.

Was a bit sceptic with the new location. It being bigger & more upscale made me wonder if the drinks would be as good as always. I was proven wrong. Every single cocktail was perfect. Le Mal Nécessaire is without a doubt the best cocktail bar in Montreal & probably Canada. It baffles me why they are not on the 50 best bar list.View more
The drinks are interesting but for the price seemed just okay. The interior design of the bar is amazing & ambiance is fantastic. Service, just not good at all. You wait outside for a spot, then when you get inside realize it's not even full but they had you wait outside to make it appear it's a waitlist only. Inside, the waiters & bartenders are chaotic. 30 minutes to get first drink when other patrons that arrived after us get theirs. & then try to pay the bill & no one is around (waitress disappeared). It could be a lot better place if they got more attentive staff.View more
Maybe the best cocktail bar in Montreal. Easily the best Negroni I've probably ever had. & the service & vibe is just as good as the drinks, thanks to Jess who made us feel at home & taken care of the entire time. Can't recommend enough🍹View more
If you're looking for the best cocktails in Montreal, you might have just found them here! All the ingredients are fresh, made from scratch including juices & syrups (except the liqueur of course). The Pina Fuego served inside an actual pineapple not only looks exotic, but also tastes delicious. If I didn't know how much alcohol was in it, I might have gulped it up as it was very yummy. My companion's Old Fashion surprised me with the range of flavors & depth of taste. The Coco Supremo was also delicious. I got a modified version as they were out of an ingredient. It was served in a carved out coconut which was pretty cool. The atmosphere is chick & the decor stylish. Beautiful ambiance completes the experience. I'd definitely choose this bar to impress a friend. I'm so lucky I chose this bar. The reviews were a little confusing & certainly don't do it justice. Most of the complains were actually about the service & not the drinks. Despite that, I'd highly recommend it. This is a rare gem in the heart of Montreal if not in Canada.View more
Perfect bar spot to finish the evening. We went fairly & upon exit we realized there was a bouncer & a waiting line so it's a popular spot. The bar seats were nice & the bartenders know exactly when to come by & check on you. We also saw them climb the alcohol shelves to grab a bottle for us. The drink menu is so much fun & we wanted to try every glass. The pina colada was slushy & stayed cold for almost an hour. Everything was on the expensive side so this is a once-in-a-while-only-for-special-occasions baView more
Had a great experience at Bar Le Mal Necessaire for our first night in Montreal. The service from start to finish was 100%. Bouncer was great at keeping everyone informed as to how long the wait would be to enter & let us wait inside for 10 minutes before out seats were ready. We sat at the bar & was served by Jess & Jackson. Both gave exceptional service, giving delicious recommendations of what cocktails to try based on our preferences - Jackson's recommendation of the housemate coconut cream (I believe) added to the espresso martini slush was delicious. Would definitely return on another trip to Montreal.View more
I just left this cocktail bar with my sister, & I just have to say that this place is officially one of the highlights of our 29th birthday trip! The drinks were amazing, as well as the staff (met a fellow Georgian (US)), & funky, soulful music from a DJ who you can tell loves what he does. This place was an experience we won't forget! Will certainly be a return customer.View more
Jess & Adri were the bees knees of service Jackson was very attractive & also VERY skilled at his job (I actually enjoyed his service the most) Love the strong water also, definitely crowd pleaser. The pineapples were excellent I was there on a Friday & had the best time of my entire life. I would live there if I could. Bathrooms are incredible & very spacious.... I live life only with necessities & this bar is Mal Nécessaire.View more
Not quite understand the drink as much. It is instagramable. Service is overwhelmed by numbers of customers even weekday. Hard to get their attention. However, they are friendly & the drink was ok. Location: great, close to China town Ambience: amazing Service: Meh Taste: Average Price: $$$ 1 drinks could cost about $30-40 at least the one that I ordered. I do not know what in the mix as the server did not explain, copied order from others. Speakeasy? Not quite Just another cool bar. Worth to visit if you come in a group Oh yeah, live DJView more
Hidden gem! This is a definite do not miss while in Montreal. We had the pleasure of stumbling upon this cocktail bar with amazing vibes, staff & cocktails. Jess the manager went above & beyond to make our experience top notch, so good we visited twice. Can't wait to get back to Montreal & our now fav spot, Le Mal Necessaire🥂View more
This place is fantastic with some of the best service in Montreal. I was in from Toronto & stopped in before heading out for the night. The DJ was spinning groovy vinyl & my server turned out to be the bar manager. Not only did she make recommendations based on my drink preferences but once she founded out I was looking to come back with friends she helped insure we could get a spot, then her & the bartender invented drinks for us based on our preferences & hand wrote us note to help us get into another hot spot. This place is a must stop for anyone coming from out of town & it puts most Toronto louges to shame.View more
