Review Summary

At Asie Moderne, a small, affordable, family-run spot, a mix of Cambodian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Lao flavors comes through in a variety of comforting dishes. Proho ketik, a pork dish with Krung spice, fermented fish and coconut milk, is a standout, and the papaya salad, with regular and seafood versions, gets frequent praise, along with beef citronelle skewers and satisfying noodle bowls like Phnom Penh khuy teav whose broth is highlighted. The prices are reasonable and the staff described as lovely, making the place a quick, welcoming hangout with a cozy vibe. Some reviews note changes under new ownership, with fried tofu no longer as crispy and beef lok Lak needing more work, and a saucy, thinly sliced beef stir fry not meeting expectations, though others still call the mee katang the best and the soup among the most delicious, underscoring a mix of high- and mid-range experiences. Overall, the restaurant remains a go-to for authentic flavors, a lively and affordable option in a tiny but gem-like setting.

I've been coming here for over 20 years. Definitely no longer the same. Was better before the new owners. Fried tofu used to be the crispiest & delicious, now no longer. Beef lok Lak needs a lot of work. I got a saucy, thinly sliced beef stir fry. Quite disappointed 😞

Love coming here for Phnom Penh (khuy teav) noodles. The broth you get on the side is delicious, & the prices are reasonable. Also had a great fried rice once! The staff is lovely.

2024 Update: We go here once in a while but it had been a long time since we went & not sure what happened but unfortunately our latest visit was extremely disappointing... I can no longer recommend this place. We ordered several dishes, ALL the ones that had "sauce" were made with way way wayyyy too much starch, the "sauce" was more like some very thick gelatinous opaque gravy thing? The fried calamari were also very very oily, I mean sure it's fried so oily is expected but this was too much, a lot more than usual... Idk, maybe it was just a bad night, but, not sure I will be going back it's far & not worth rolling the dice :( Original Review (2018): First experience was good, we had the fried calamari with saute spicy beef, both were delicious & would order again especially the fried calamari. We also had the general Tao & unfortunately that was a huge disappointment for me as I love gtao... The meat itself was fine, good chunks of clean white meat, but it was just completely drenched in a kinda sweetnsour sauce, didn't really taste like gtao sauce, but the main issue was just that it was wayyyyyyyyyy too much sauce, so the gtao was just super soggy... I guess gtao just isn't their thing at all unfortunately because everything else I've seen looked great, so I'll definitely go back to try more! If you order gtao there just do yourself a favor & ask for the sauce on the side!
