About

Restaurant Akwaba, which means Welcome, is located in the Rosemont-Petite-Patrie district of Montreal.

Akwaba proposes a culinary journey combining African and Greek treats with a modern and original touch within a pleasant, warm and welcoming atmosphere.

At Akwaba, we offer traditional African dishes such as Kédjénou (stewed chicken), variants of choukouya (beef, lamb, goat or chicken breast braised with a mix of African and Greek spices (kankankan) onions and peppers), Yassa (chicken or lamb cooked in an onion-lemon-mustard sauce), Mafé, Tiep bou dienn or yap, braised marinated fish, the unforgettable Alloko (fried plantains), attiéké (cassava couscous) and much more ..., traditional Greek dishes such as Moussaka, etc. and dishes resulting from the fusion of the two such as African Souvlaki etc ...

Indeed, the chef and owner is very knowledgeable in African and Greek cuisine. He was previously a restaurant owner and chef in Greece. He has worked closely with many great African and Greek chefs and has an excellent command of both cuisines.

The Akwaba concept aims, on the one hand, to increase awareness by promoting the true flavors of authentic African cuisine in all its dimensions and on the other hand, to introduce ingredients of African cuisine in a few Greek recipes: thus, the potato is replaced by the yam (sweet potato) in the Greek Moussaka, tuna is substituted by salmon in the Bassamoise Salad etc. The addition of cress to the ingredients of this salad brings out a special taste that is very appreciated (it is the Queen of our salads). Furthermore, all our salads are seasoned with home-made vinaigrettes made with extra virgin olive oil from Kalamata (Greece).

Dessert includes, among other things, Pineapple Chutney Crêpes cake with Pinacolada sauce, the comforting Akwaba pie served with lime sorbet, dêghê, Baklava (Greek) etc.

At Akwaba, the freshness of the food is essential. Come with your friends or family, many pleasant surprises are waiting for you.

I am Greek & my friend is Cameroonian so we thought, hey, this would be perfect for us to try together & try each other's culture. I'm so glad I found this on Insta from zai.eats because I would have missed this place cause it is small. My friend & I DEVOURED the food. I got to try alloko, jollof rice, DG chicken, & their bissap juice. DELICIOUS. For the Greek portion, we got bougatsa which was good & African Souvlaki platter which while not typical Souvlaki flavour, still made me feel nostalgic & was delicious too. Also served Fasolakia Lathera with an African sweet potato yam which was good. It was so cool to see Greek food with an African twist! I liked that the resto is also like a corner store as they sell African & Greek products. I would say the resto fusion is 70% African & Greek 30% influence which is still appreciated.
The lady was so sweet & she also speaks Greek!
I would say the only negatives were that its not a sit down resto but a take out, but they do have picnic tables outside. It was raining when we went but Louisa, the lady, let us use the small table inside.
Other than that, we had a really good time & Im glad that I visited this restaurant & look forward to coming again!

This food has aided in my conversion to african food. Fresh & just so tasty! You can call in advance to order as it does take a little time, but worth the wait. Staff is friendly

I like this place simply because the owner operators seem to be genuinely nice folks.

Some from my group looked beyond this fact & were not impressed with the service. It is molasses slow because food is not prepared in advance.

lesson learnt: If you are in a hurry & have traditional expectations on long it should take to get served...pick another restaurant.

Otherwise the food is prepared to order..so it is fresh, the ingredients are fresh. The spices are used judiciously. Overall the quality of the food justifies the prices.

If you are offered the soup as we were (I still don't know what it was) take it its delicious. I would tend to order the African dishes over the greek specialties but the moussaka was actually great other than being a small portion.

My wife & I came here for Valentines day & we were both pleasantly surprised. African / Greek fusion sounds a little wobbly, & admittedly they serve less of a fusion & more of an offer of Greek or African dishes. Please, don't let that out you off. This is a great culinary experience. I've never tasted some of the flavors I had that night ever before. Potions are very generous.
Sadly this restaurant has two critiques. First, the place looks a little ghetto. Second, the menu online features dishes that appear really, really underwhelming. I must admit I almost cancelled going once I say the pictures of the food. Presentation matters folks.
Needless to say all this pre-judgment was wrong. This place serves great food, 100 times more unique than you would gather from looking at the menu, & the service was all that can be desired.
Yes, it takes some time to get your dishes served, but it's worth the wait. Besides, it's BYOW, so have a glass of wine or two (or three) & chill.
We will return to this non-pretentious, focus on the food restaurant again soon. After all, what matters most is always the food.
