Horrible experience from start to finish
I made a reservation Friday night at 7:30 to pass a quiet relaxing dinner at one of Montreal best steak houses. I had been to the older location so I expected an expensive menu. On the positive side I had a $100.00 gift certificate from the original restaurant to lessen the blow.
From the moment I walked inside, I was greeted by four hostesses and quickly ushered to a table. The loud disco music and the noise were the first things that hit me. We were placed in the narrow walkway between the front door and the main seating area. Both my wife and myself had an unsettling feeling with both the noise level and the location of our table. Our table got bumped a couple of times as the waiters were doing their business. We considered leaving but we wanted to use the gift certificate before it got too old.
We were greeted by an overly friendly waiter (friendly to the point of being annoying) and he proposed that we start our fine evening with a glass of champagne. Politely declining we asked for the wine menu and he brought us their wine folder. A quick scan of the pages indicated there was no bottle less than $120.00. It was only afterward that we realized the opposite side on the menu had a more reasonable selection. We also asked if our table could be changed.
When the waiter returned he indicated that they could move us, but his recommendation was that we were in a better place than the alternatives available. Another waiter filled our glasses with water, while another waiter presented us with the meat and seafood platter to assist us in making a selection. He identified the bone in rib as their signature selection. When I ordered the bone in rib, I was told it was not available. I dont understand how you do not have your signature cut of meat on a Friday at 7:30?
I then choose a 20 oz steak to share with my wife when I was told that there was a sharing charge of $15.00. I then upgraded my order to an $89.00 steak that would not be subject to a sharing charge. No longer wanting to dine but just wanting to eat and leave, we finished our steak, which was rather good. Upon presentation of the gift certificates to our waiter he excused himself to confirm that the certificates were no longer valid.
Asking for the manager, he reconfirmed that they could not accept the certificates. Although this was the Queue de Cheval with the same logo and same telephone number, because the certificates had the old address on it, they were not valid at this newer location. He discussed some sort of reorganization, however as a customer, someone paid $100 to provide me a future benefit. Yet no future benefit could be redeemed here. The manager also had the audacity to encourage us to visit the former location (the now Beer Market) and the manager would accept it there. At this point he left our table.
I paid the full bill and left vowing never to return
Pursuing with my latest touring of Montreal steakhouses. 2nd visit at QDC in 5 years, and the experience was as great as my last visit here. Of course, at those prices, it is easy to question value, but as far as I am concerned, the care and knowledge about treating their meat (aging it properly, the advices, the use of such a great meat like the usda prime, wagyu, etc) as well as the precise cooking keeps QDC among Montreal finest steakhouses. The ambience was this time different from my last visit here (I sat alone at their tiny marbled bar), the service as stellar as I remember it from last time (on this evening, my waiter, Thomas, offering a service of the standard of a grand house, indeed, with superb balance between formal and informal, professionalism and coolness). I do not agree with some suggestions that they push the bill: yes, they recommend things to you, as any great wait staff will guide their customer, but I never felt bad/ucomfortable turning down some of their suggestions. My Lou cut's rib eye had the expected enjoyable buttery flavor (successful, indeed, but only reason I keep it at 4/5 instead of 5/5 is because of some few top robust-flavored rib steaks I had in the US). Even the dessert, their take on the tiramisu, was tasty and well done (again, their take on the tiramisu, so do not expect it in its Italian versions). I hope I can go there next time and try the Porter House for 2 or the Wagyu (its is, as you would have guessed, not something that can be afforded on a regular basis). For sure, you do not go to such place for cuts you can get anywhere else or do at home (for eg a filet mignon), but for things within which they do invest care and expertise not found easily at other steakhouses (so the cuts they have aged, etc ) Picking the best among Montreal finest steakhouses will never be an easy task, but QDC is objectively among those few ones.

I love la queue de cheval and their food. The chefs put all their heart in what they do. Been going there since the age of 16 years old. You get what you pay for and the service is excellent. Cheers to Thomas, Jacky, Maxi, Omar & Peter for always doing a good job and making me feel at home!

I love this restaurant. For a classy dinner is the best place to go. Excellent steacks and sea food. Will always recomend it.
My mom surprised me here for my birthday a few years ago and recently my boyfriend and I went here for our one year anniversary, and it was truly a very special occasion!! The whole experience was awesome!! The waiters were friendly and cool, spoke both french and english perfectly. They answered all of our questions and we never had to ask for anything (except for the bill :) ). Super service.
The food was equally great. There are so many choices and the side dishes are all high quality, even the broccoli tasted high end! the steak was juicy, VERY juicy
and I strongly recommend the mashed potatoes, fabulous!
Pricey, but worth the experience!
Excellent steaks, nice dining room, cool cigar lounge / outdoor patio. Service could be better. Expensive. Also great drinks at the bar.
My wife and I had a taste for grilled steak with french fries last night. So, after years of bypassing this restaurant - on account of the mixed reviews coupled with expense - we finally decided to give it a try ... and can now return to bypassing it. In a nutshell: The fresh oysters from PEI and the arugula salad were outstanding, the french fries were a little too brown for our liking but still very good, my wife's petit mignon and my Kansas cut were both succulent pieces of meat but decidedly bland. I suppose, the addition of garlic butter or one of the sauces listed on the menu would have enhanced taste but we hadn't come for butter or sauce. We skipped dessert.
Our verdict: In our grand city of culinary delights, there are plenty of other restaurant choices that satisfy the taste buds and the senses without assaulting the wallet. The food still deserves high marks for quality and freshness. Service was ok but undifferentiated.
