Taverne on the Square in Westmount is a small restaurant focused on steaks and fries. The lighting and decor make this place ideal for a romantic setting.
Reviewers describe Taverne Sur Le Square as a warm, welcoming spot with a cozy atmosphere and consistently strong service, where courses like pappardelle with mushrooms, the house mac and cheese, and rib eye steak are praised for flavor and presentation. The wine list is noted as extensive with good value and a large cellar, and the menu offers something for everyone with seasonal specials and superb desserts. While the majority of feedback is positive and guests say they plan to return, a few mention the loud dining room and one steak dish arriving undercooked and lacking flavor. Many highlight attentive staff and a memorable overall experience that feels consistent over the years. The ambiance and service are repeatedly cited as key strengths, with some reviews enjoying a livelier atmosphere and others a more relaxed vibe. Overall the impression is that Taverne Sur Le Square provides a high quality, wine friendly experience that makes it a Montreal staple for many diners.
The pastas are delicious (mac & cheese, mushrooms tagliatelle) ! Great selection of wines. Our waiter & the staff were very attentive. That was our first time, a wonderful find !

Pros: the service was great, extremely attentive, & welcoming. The salmon tartare was great, & so was the kouing-amann was excellent as well.
Con: the only negative, was that we ordered the steak & aligot, which was not great; we ordered medium rare, & it was still mooing when it came to the table. Even after it came back, it was still lacking in flavour. Would not recommend this dish
Excellent food & great service. This place has been around for a while & has remained consistent. Little less lively than I remembered it. Keep up the great work.
My daughter's first-ever'fancy dinner'. She was a bit nervous at first, but the warm welcome & easy service we received helped her relax. She had a great time!
Glad I tried this institution, but was left a bit underwhelmed by the food. We tried the cacio e pepe brussels sprouts & the steak & aligots. Both were fine, but nothing special. Would have liked a bit more texture in both dishes personally. I'd only go back for a drink & dessert. The bread pudding is the best I've had in Montreal. The Manhattan with the homemade cherries was great too.
Best bartender ever I was traveling alone through Montreal & was recommended this place. I sat at the bar & had one of the best dinners of my life. I'm only 29 so my palette may not be all there yet but this dinner was off the hook. Mac n cheese was divine to put it simply. Filet mignon went crazy with the red wine sauce. Do yourself a favor & get the cheesy whipped potatoes with the steak. Down a bottle of cab throughout the meal. Better than any other restaurant in Montreal.
Celebrated our mum's 85th birthday at The Tavern. The team made the event amazing. They were keenly aware of people's unique needs & attended to them remarkably well. Thank you for making the evening extra special.

We sat outside which was nice. The service was pretty good. The food just didn't live up to the price. Tiny wings very overcooked. Jerky wings? Rigatoni with meatballs were uninspired. I would not go back.
Server Anthony was very professional & knowledgeable. The food was something a child could do better...overcooked rigatoni with a watery tomato "sauce", tagliatelle mushroom had 1 mushroom in it & no taste. Those frozen chicken wings were embarrassing. The roasted chicken was the only dish that was a success & very good. Nonetheless the server & the ambience compensated a big part.

What's wrong with some places? Even if the food is ok, the snobby attitude & the way over prices makes it ridiculous... It's a tavern not a Michelin star restaurant ... I had the audacity to ask if the ribeye was grassed because it was 8$ per once with a minimum of 13 onces per serving... the answer from our waitress : I think it is... There so much better places in Montreal that you do t have to east your time there.
Ordered prosciutto & focaccia. It was delicious extravagant Explosion of flavours in your mouth if you order it with the focaccia it is enough for someone's full dinner! I adored how to focaccia was crispy on the outside, but was soft on the inside! The french fries were delicious & crispy & are enough for two people! My bubby ordered the mushroom pasta we loved how creamy it was! The swordfish was light & delicate, & it was the perf ect size for one person's dinner! Mike was our waiter. He was 😆 hilarious, nice & very handsome Quoted my bubby. In conclusion this evening & restaurant experience was five star experience & had delicious food incredible service, & wonderful company!!! five out of five
Amazing food & great wine selection. The flavors were excellent. The Wagyu steak was butt, & cooked to perfection the interior is tastefully decorated. The bar is well stocked. The owner who is a trained chef in French cooking techniques stopped by to make sure we were taken care of.
We had crab risotto, cauliflower, winter salad , crab toast & roasted chicken. All were good, risotto was the best among these. So food is good, atmosphere is great but the prices were too high l m afraid.
