We had crab risotto, cauliflower, winter salad , crab toast & roasted chicken. All were good, risotto was the best among these. So food is good, atmosphere is great but the prices were too high l m afraid.View more
Food is ordinary, not worth the $$$ Good service Very nice space & atmosphereView more
Ate here for NYE & the food was phenomenal! Service was excellent too, & the atmosphere was, as expected, fun a vibrant. The stand-out dishes for our party were the steak, key lime pie & bread pudding. Would recommend to anyone staying in the Montreal area.View more
Excellent service! Excellent food! The kind of place where you are family on your first visit & will have you coming back again & again!View more
La nourriture était bonne (salade de radicchio & le saumon), mais le cocktail était fade & dilué. Le service était décevant. Peu attentif, ni proactif pour un groupe de 10 personnes.View more
Tavern on the Square was a delightful experience. The food was delicious, the staff was exceptionally courteous, with a very warm dining ambiance. Looking forward to returning soon.View more
Nice place with good food although it is a bit overpriced. I had the duck breast & it was cooked perfectly but it was very salty. There is a full bar with a very nice drink selection. The service was good & the waitress was friendly.View more
Great food with great service. The salmon was good but a bit small.View more

Really good food, the duck was amazing & so were the mashed potatoes!View more
Jon & his crew have the perfect balance of attentive & casual service. One of our favorite go-to spots for a special occasion or an impromptu night out. Their "specials of the day" menu tends to have some gems, especially when it comes to local & in season food.View more
We had my son's wedding reception there, & I must say, they far exceeded our expectations. We started out with hors d'oeuvres that were phenomenal & plentiful with the staff seeing that no one was missed, then on to the dinner that was amazing & on time. Everything seemed to move like clockwork, leaving our guests not waiting for anything. I can honestly say that I have never had attentive waiters & waitresses (Napkins were folded as soon as someone got up from the table & no one's glass was empty for long), no to mention the staff behind the bar who kept drinks flowing. I wouldn't hesitate to book them again. My compliments to the chef & all the staff. ABSOLUTELY SUPERB!!!
The food & the staff were amazing... i had the caesar salad & the beef carpaccio & they were delicious, though on the pricey side. The portions were large (i had two appetizers instead of a main meal & i couldn't finish them). The only downside for the food was that the menu was quite limited.
As for the service, it was great. Every time my water was finished, a waiter appeared & they were very curious to know if I was enjoying my meal. Also, they were very nice.
It was quite noisy though & it is supposedly always busy. It is not a place to go if you are looking for quiet, on the other side, it felt quite private (we were in a banquette, which was nice)
EDIT: I took my parents to Taverne for their anniversary this year, & was just as impressed as the first time I dined there in 2008 (& again last year with a friend). All 3 visits have been impeccable from beginning to end.
I want to stress that I am on a student budget - I don't have millions to throw around, & I'm not usually to be found in very pricey restaurants. However, Taverne is WELL worth a little saving. Their ingredients are truly top-notch & I have never had a single thing to eat there that wasn't totally scrumptious, from the bread to the desserts.
The service is always warm & competent. The wine list is full of great picks, & the ambiance is so lively! This is absolutely my favourite resto in Montreal.
On the anniversary visit, my father was floored by the liver - something he was tempted to order but dubious about any restaurant preparation (expecting a leathery, sad strip). It far, far exceeded his expectations, served with sugar-cured bacon & delicious spinach & potatoes. He said it was better than any filet mignon he's had in recent years - high praise from a true carnivore. My mother had roast chicken, which doesn't sound exciting but was mouth-watering; same for my porcini pasta dish. Everything we ate was just stunning.

(2008 Review) I was taken to Taverne on the Square for my birthday last night - the experience was unforgettable.
My meal was perfect from beginning to end - it helped that we happened to know two of the staff, so we got some great recommendations.
I started with a bellini & a beautiful salad with warm goat's cheese & poached pears - outstanding! Light but bursting with flavour.
Continued with a pasta dish I'll be remembering for years; made with porcini stock which kicked the complexity of the dish up considerably from a simple mushroom pasta to something that could stand shoulder to shoulder with any meat dish.
Was graciously offered port & a birthday dessert (a decadent, melting, freshly baked cookie with ice cream; sinful!) complete with a candle.
Overall I felt completely spoiled & very welcome. The food far exceeded my expectations & the service was perfect (& not just because of the friends working there).
The atmosphere was lively & warm, & the prices reflected the quality of the ingredients (only the best) & the highly professional ambience. Don't go for a cheap meal; go for a treat & forget about the numbers! You will not be disappointed.
Delicious. I'm always impressed when I dine at the Tavern on the Square. The food is wonderful & the staff are knowledgeable. Great place to impress future clients.
I work close by so I have eaten here many times, mostly because it's convenient , it's expensive & the food/choice is not great... the menu has not changed in years....the best part for me is the wait staff, they are knowledgeable & very friendly. Resto is in an office complex, which is also connected to the Westmount condos....may explain why it's usually full.
Food is not bad but way over priced. $25 for the mac & cheese is outrageous. Although besides the price I saw something tonight that really angered me. I was sitting with my family when an older gentleman came in the front entrance. He somehow fell down the stairs & bumped his head. One of the waiters screamed to one of the waitresses to lock the front door for some reason. Then someone brought ice a & that was it. The gentleman was left to his own with the 2 women from his party to take care of him. No other care was provided by the staff. I can't believe the manager never did anything. At one point he walked over glanced over & when he saw the man was not seriously hurt, he just walked away. He never approached to ask if he was ok or if he needed anything. I couldn't believe it! I was so angry that nothing else was done to take care of this poor man. All kinds of complications could have happened. He could have had a concussion, a subdural bleed, a seizure from the trauma. That manager is comletely useless. He walks around, never smiling, trying to look important. I hope nothing like this ever happens again. Don't count on getting any help from the staff.
