About us

Yann Bris, owner and chef, originally from Brittany in France, more precisely from the city of Paimpol, a small fishing port in the Cotes d'Armor, settled in Quebec in 2005. After earning his degree in hotel and restaurant management, he worked for the Accor Group as director of hotel-restaurant in the southwest of France, a bastion of French gastronomy. He opened his first crêperie in Fort Lauderdale, on the coast of Florida, in the United States.

This success and some leisure travel to the beautiful city of Montreal, prompted him to return and try the Quebec experience. He opened a decoration boutique in downtown Montreal, on Amherst Street, which he calls Karactère with a "K". Despite the success of this enterprise, he misses restauration. He decides to close the shop and starts a project that is closer to his love of gastronomy by opening a crêperie in the now trendy district known as Griffintown.

He sets his sights on a former hairdressing studio that he completely transforms to create Spanel, the Breton word for "spatula" Spatula for turning pancakes. Spanel's philosophy is based on a cuisine made exclusively with fresh, quality products. Thanks to the proximity of the Atwater Market, Yann can fulfill his wish to serve his customers crepes and gourmet dishes. Spanel is also committed to offering its customers a warm and friendly atmosphere.

The choice of a shady terrace, surrounded by trees and equipped with heaters, allows them to make the most of outdoor dining, from the first days of summer until the arrival of winter. The chef hopes you'll enjoy discovering Spanel and come back often to spend pleasant moments.

Correct mais je m'attendais à mieux en ayant lu les avis. Les ingrédients de la crêpe salée étaient de bonne qualité mais la salade en bien trop grande quantité, ça masquait les autres ingrédients qui étaient en faibles quantités. La crêpe sucrée au dessert & le smoothie étaient eux très bons !

What a hidden gem in Montreal! The crepes here are truly amazing…one of the best we had so far (highly recommend the Martiniquaise). We also tried two savoury crepes for breakfast, & everything was fresh, flavourful, & beautifully prepared.

You can feel the care & hard work in every detail. The service was warm & attentive. The owner was very kind, honest, & offered us great recommendations from their menu, & made us feel welcome.

A wonderful experience all around for me & my partner! Highly recommend stopping by if you're in Montreal

We went to Spanel several years ago & we really loved it! But we came again last Saturday & were quite disappointed. The French Onion soup was not how we remembered it, it tasted like the caramelized onions were really sweet, which imparted a strange flavor to the soup. We also had a Tatine crepe ( crepe with apple & ice cream) & it really lacked apples! It's a shame, but it seems like it has gone down hill.

It was my first time having breakfast with my friends. The food was great, the place was cute, & the atmosphere was lovely. What really made the experience special, though, was the waiter, Vong, who was so professional, welcoming, & friendly. The positive energy & attention to detail added an extra layer to the whole experience. Vong's kindness really made us feel comfortable, & it was a special touch to our morning. Having Vong there was definitely a highlight!

Third & last time we go sadly, barely any ingredients in the crepes, prosciutto was literally the butt end, what's left of it after trying to eat the tough & stringy meat part. I've never seen anyone serve prosciutto that bad. One waitress was in our face the whole time, another looked like she didn't want to be there, we really wanted to like this place, too bad

I come & sit almost everyday, whether I just have coffee or try something new on the menu, because this family owned business is a true gem in Montreal. The owners are the nicest, most helpful people, who give from their hearts. Their crepes are delicious & fresh. The aroma & atmosphere are like home. If you haven't experienced Spanel, you definitely should. They are genuinely amazing people.

Restaurant sutué dans un quartier propre & bien embourgeoisé Endroit très intime, terrasse arrière bien protégée par des parasols. Service excellent, portion très soutenant, personnel accueillant & attentif aux besoins particuliers. Personné.a mobilité réduite peuvent trouver l'endroit difficile d'accès mais uil y a une.petite terrasse sur ?ue accessible. Réservation suggérée. Statîonnement sur rue. Memu varier en crêpes. Pour certains choix de mets le restaurateur s'engager à remettre une contribution financière à un organisme de bienfaisance (belle & rare initiative).

They have an incredible selection of stuffed crepes & almost all can be done gluten free! The staff/owners are the most lovely human beings & treated us like we were long lost friends, helping me to sit in the most comfortable spot while super pregnant. Delicious latte bowls too!

Awesome experience! Light & flavourful dough, well seasoned fillings, fair price & cozy environment. Didn't even photographed the salty crêpe because was so delicious I ate it all at once! I'll be back surely to try some of the other options in the menu.

The best mushroom, cheese & shredded duck Crepes, the Westmount one! Wow! Amazing & spectacular taste & service!
I definitely will be back with my family. I meet a couple of friends at the place, we had a great talked, have fun & eat a brunch from 10:30am to noon. My friends ordered 1. the V.L.S a Crêpe with grilled chicken, Emmental cheese green pepper & tomatoes...Uff so good! The 2nd. The I.D.S very good plate with eggs & avocado salsa..delicious! Finally we shared a Nutella & Banana Crêpe... It was just a perfect time, food & environment!😉💯🎯

The crepe au sarrasin was very good, the service was also very good. I removed a star because the interior of the restaurant could use a bit of attention. Between the blackened floors, the worn tables, & abundance of flies, the experience was less enjoyable. The flies were really relentless though, there were a dozen of them, & on top of that the fruit flies…

Delicious buckwheat crepes, satisfying portions with a large selection at great prices. Our server was wonderfully attentive. If you're around, don't hesitate to go in- we came in on a hot day, & the back terrace was wonderful.
