About

Punjab Canteen serves a diverse selection of traditional Indian dishes with a distinct focus on vegetarian recipes and charcoal-grilled specialties. The menu highlights bold flavor profiles achieved through authentic spice blends and high-heat preparation techniques. Guests encounter a variety of protein alternatives crafted from paneer, lentils, and fresh vegetables seasoned to reflect classic regional standards. The open kitchen layout emphasizes the process of grilling skewers and preparing breads within traditional tandoor ovens. Each platter showcases intricate spice balance rather than relying solely on heat levels, providing a comprehensive view of subcontinent culinary practices. The environment prioritizes functional, no-frills service that maintains a consistent focus on ingredient quality. This establishment delivers straightforward preparations of staple recipes that cater to those seeking genuine aromatic profiles and traditional cooking methods.

Review Summary

Punjab Canteen is widely recognized for serving delicious, authentic Punjabi cuisine with fresh ingredients and generous portions. Many patrons praise the flavorful dishes, such as the butter chicken, various paranthas, and dal makhani, often highlighting the warm, homemade quality of the food. While the majority of guests have glowing remarks about the welcoming atmosphere and attentive, friendly service, some diners have noted occasional inconsistencies regarding wait times, menu accessibility via QR codes, and specific spice levels. Overall, the restaurant is frequently recommended as a top destination in Montreal for those seeking a genuine and comforting Indian dining experience.

I recently visited this restaurant & had an amazing dining experience! The food was absolutely delicious, with authentic Indian flavors that felt like a warm hug for the soul. Every dish was perfectly spiced & beautifully presented.

The staff were incredibly friendly & attentive, making sure we felt welcomed & taken care of throughout the meal. Their recommendations were spot-on, & they genuinely seemed passionate about ensuring we enjoyed our time.

The cozy atmosphere added to the charm, with a warm & inviting decor that made it feel like the perfect spot for a relaxed evening.

I highly recommend this place for anyone craving delicious Indian food in a welcoming & comfortable setting!

Punjab Canteen holds a special place for us - Montreal trips aren't complete without it. The food always feels like home, which is why this visit genuinely hurt to experience.

We were one of only two tables in the restaurant, yet our food took 45 minutes to arrive. When it finally did, the jeera rice was completely raw & the jeera itself was burnt. We had to show the server a video of us pressing the rice to prove it. She was kind, apologized, & replaced it .By that point, nearly an hour had passed & the mood was ruined.

The bhindi masala & dal tadka were fine, but the paneer bhurji was another disappointment - no seasoning, no masala, just plain onion. Barely edible.

The server was genuinely sweet & didn't charge us for the rice, & we appreciate that. But the kitchen clearly had an off day, & unfortunately it affected everything on our table.

Not sure if we will visit again 🙁Unfortunately also I cannot upload the video I took but trying my best to attach for reference

I wish I could give 0 stars, we ordered
Noodles which were average, malai chaap which was just chaap dipped in mayo, malai kofta which was too sweet, dal makhani which was just pathetic, jeera rice in which jeera was burnt.

For drinks, mango lassi which was ok & salty lassi which had no salt.

Never gonna come back

extremely disappointing in their food I was expecting more based off the 4000 reviews & the rating here on Google. The butter chicken was extremely watered down in cream & lacked any flavor. Look at the colour in the picture. The biryani had a very weird taste & also looked strange. Very disappointing.

Worst staff experience. They are very rude to customers & completely ignore Uber drivers. No proper communication or respectful treatment at all.

The food packaging is very poor quality, clearly done to save money, & the food often does not feel fresh. This place seriously needs to improve its hygiene, service, & professionalism. Food inspectors should do an inspection here.

Highly recommend because food taste great, very reasonable pricing. Super nice & clean environment.
However, missing paper towels in bathroom. Service could be better, took a bit long to get some of our dishes & service person wasn't too'happy'.
