About

Punjab Canteen serves a diverse selection of traditional Indian dishes with a distinct focus on vegetarian recipes and charcoal-grilled specialties. The menu highlights bold flavor profiles achieved through authentic spice blends and high-heat preparation techniques. Guests encounter a variety of protein alternatives crafted from paneer, lentils, and fresh vegetables seasoned to reflect classic regional standards. The open kitchen layout emphasizes the process of grilling skewers and preparing breads within traditional tandoor ovens. Each platter showcases intricate spice balance rather than relying solely on heat levels, providing a comprehensive view of subcontinent culinary practices. The environment prioritizes functional, no-frills service that maintains a consistent focus on ingredient quality. This establishment delivers straightforward preparations of staple recipes that cater to those seeking genuine aromatic profiles and traditional cooking methods.

Review Summary

Punjab Canteen is widely recognized for serving delicious, authentic Punjabi cuisine with fresh ingredients and generous portions. Many patrons praise the flavorful dishes, such as the butter chicken, various paranthas, and dal makhani, often highlighting the warm, homemade quality of the food. While the majority of guests have glowing remarks about the welcoming atmosphere and attentive, friendly service, some diners have noted occasional inconsistencies regarding wait times, menu accessibility via QR codes, and specific spice levels. Overall, the restaurant is frequently recommended as a top destination in Montreal for those seeking a genuine and comforting Indian dining experience.

I was really disappointed with my experience at Punjabi Canteen. The bread pakora was the only item I enjoyed-it was fresh & tasty. Unfortunately, the main course was not worth the price. I ordered the chicken curry, & it had a very unpleasant smell, which made it difficult to eat.

The customer service was also disappointing. The staff were not polite, friendly, or cooperative when we raised our concerns. Overall, the food quality & service did not meet expectations, & I don't think I'll be returning.

Always love to see a pani puri!

Thw chicken tikka masala was so tender & moist & quite spicy which I loved but my son couldn't eat, which the waitress did warn us about.

A little slow of service for a fairly dead restaurant.

Then ordered malai kofta & it was quite sweet almost like butternut squash soup but my son liked it.

My cocktail was sickenly sweet & I couldn't even finish it even watered down.

Also, rice not being included is 👎🏻.

Was not told we would need to go up to the counter to pat after given the check so we were just sitting there for 10+ minutes.

I had one of the worst experiences ordering from Punjab Canteen. I ordered the Butter Chicken & Chicken Masala, & both dishes arrived undercooked. The chicken was not cooked properly, making it completely unsafe & unpleasant to eat. Instead of enjoying the meal, I had to throw most of it away.

For the prices they charge, I expected fresh, properly cooked food. Food safety should be the absolute minimum standard, & this order failed badly. I would never risk ordering from this restaurant again.

I strongly recommend that others avoid ordering from Punjab Canteen until they improve their food quality & ensure that the chicken is fully cooked before serving. This was a complete waste of money & a very disappointing experience.

extremely disappointing in their food I was expecting more based off the 4000 reviews & the rating here on Google. The butter chicken was extremely watered down in cream & lacked any flavor. Look at the colour in the picture. The biryani had a very weird taste & also looked strange. Very disappointing.
