About

Place Carmin centers its culinary identity on traditional French techniques applied to an extensive selection of fresh maritime ingredients and flame-grilled meats. The menu emphasizes precise preparation methods that highlight the inherent quality of sustainably sourced fish and shellfish alongside robust cuts of beef. Patrons encounter a focused culinary approach where the natural flavors of seafood take precedence, supported by rich, reduction-based sauces and seasonal vegetable accompaniments. The interior environment prioritizes functional simplicity, allowing the direct connection between the open grill station and the dining floor to define the atmosphere. Each plate demonstrates a commitment to classic continental preparation styles, ensuring that charred proteins and delicate aquatic elements remain the primary focus throughout the experience. This establishment maintains a rigorous standard for consistent execution of foundational French culinary arts.

Review Summary

Place Carmin is widely recognized as a standout destination in Montreal, celebrated for its elegant atmosphere, sophisticated decor, and high-quality French cuisine. Many patrons praise the restaurant for its exceptional service, noting the professional and attentive staff, while others highlight specific dishes like the duck, tartare, and various brunch offerings as culinary highlights. The venue is frequently recommended for both intimate meals and larger private events due to its beautiful dining spaces and well-organized event coordination. While the majority of guests have glowing experiences, some feedback indicates occasional inconsistencies regarding portion sizes, pricing, and service demeanor during busier times. Overall, it remains a highly regarded establishment that captures a refined dining experience.

We had been looking forward to this dinner for quite a while, which is why it's especially disappointing to leave with such a mixed experience.

First of all, the food was genuinely excellent.
Both the savory dishes & desserts showed a great amount of care, creativity, & attention to detail from the kitchen team. The chocolate cake, in particular, was honestly one of the best desserts I've had in a long time.

& that is exactly why I feel so sorry for the rest of the team.

From the moment we ordered, our server came across as noticeably impatient, with a very different attitude compared to the way other tables were being treated. What should have been an enjoyable evening kept feeling interrupted by uncomfortable interactions.

At one point, the daily dessert was incorrectly introduced to us. We only found out it had actually been changed after another staff member mentioned it when the dessert arrived. When we politely tried to confirm the mistake, instead of checking first, the server pointed at the dessert on the table & insisted she was correct, until a colleague informed her that the menu had indeed changed.

Later, we ordered a chocolate cake to share between four people, following the server's recommendation. However, while we were still eating, two of our friends had their utensils taken away without any warning or question, leaving them to continue sharing the same fork with the rest of us.

What surprised us most was being asked, almost immediately after finishing dessert, whether we wanted to split the bill. If the restaurant had been full & needed to turn tables over quickly, I would completely understand. But with more than half the restaurant still empty, it was difficult not to feel rushed throughout the evening.

Eventually, the server noticed I seemed unhappy & asked what was wrong. At first, I honestly did not plan on saying anything. I assumed perhaps it had been a busy day & she was simply tired. But after she insisted on wanting to know, I tried to calmly explain how we felt, only to be interrupted before I could even finish, as she quickly explained that she thought we were done eating, which was why the utensils had been cleared.

She offered to bring us a new piece of cake as compensation, which seemed to be the restaurant's way of trying to make up for the situation. While I appreciated the gesture, I gently declined, because the issue was never about receiving another dessert or compensation.

What disappointed us was about how an experience we had genuinely been excited for was gradually overshadowed by the feeling of being unwelcome & rushed.

I still want to express my respect to the kitchen team for the care & effort behind the food, & I also appreciate the kindness shown by some of the other staff members afterward.

I sincerely hope this server is able to find more ease & happiness in her work someday.

Because the food here truly deserves service that matches its quality.

Fantastique! One of us got the host menu & the ham app, shrimp linguine & dessert were all incredible. My wife got the duck main & it was phenomenal too. Good beer list of locally crafted ales for their restaurant, & of course a solid wine list.

I ordered an Amaro NOA but it was too sour to my liking but the food was very good. We ordered the bone marrow & it was really generous just like what I saw from other reviews. I have the duck for main dish. They smelled so good when they came & some of our parties ordered the flank steak & they said it was very very good. We pretty much cleaned up all the food. For desserts we have the Paris Brest & crepe sucette. Although the crêpes are served in a Parisienne style that they made a flame with the Grand Marnier, I still enjoyed so much more of the Paris Brest in hazelnut cream, not too sweet & it's just right.

It was Meh! The fries were super salty & overcooked.
The desserts were good though.

The food tastes good, but the amount of protein is ridiculously tiny, as is the desserts. The current trend of not raising prices any further (which have already increased a lot over the past five years) but instead reducing portion sizes-especially for meat, fish, & even desserts-is unpleasant.

Trevor was a great server & the gin martini was on point. Food was delicious. Scallop ceviche, deviled eggs, leek puff pastry, & the cod are all great. Peach crepe for dessert. The facade of the restaurant is equally as beautiful as the interior.

Top quality food, service & ambiance. We ordered the deviled egg(image), salmon tartare (image), foie gras, scallop ceviche, & sea bream(image), finishing with the maple creme brulee for dessert. Absolutely fantastic, leaving us wanting more of each dish minus the sea bream which was an ample serving size. The wait staff was kind, informative, & welcoming. All for a respectable price. A place we will definitely return to on our next trip to Montreal.
