I reserved a table on a Wednesday for a Saturday night at 7pm. I confirmed the reservation twice through their online reservation platform. It was somewhat disappointing & shocking that when we showed up at 6:30pm to get told that they don't have a table for us & we needed to wait. What's the point of reserving then? The boss/owner had to be called to sort things out. Not a good way to start my mom's birthday celebration.
The place was packed full & parking was next to impossible to find, even in the massive parking lot. We ended up parking on the street. Once seated, there was barely any service. Either the place was under staffed (most probably) or they were just too busy that night. The poor waiter for us had to manage the whole 2nd floor on his own & he was doing his best. Prices went up a lot since the last time we were there too, which is fine, as everything went up post-COVID. It is unfortunate the the service level shot way down though.
Once we ordered, the appetizers came after an acceptable amount of time. However, the main dish took easily an hour to show up. During that time, one person came to fill our water glasses once. That's it. When the food finally showed up, we had to wait for our waiter to be freed up from dealing with other tables on the floor (again, not his fault as he was alone), before serving us our plates. Since it was sitting there waiting a good 5-10 minutes, my dish was just lukewarm at best. Flavor was ok. We never never served any bread either.
When we were done, the boss/owner had to come up & tell people to clear our table. I'm pretty sure there's just a lack of employees or something, because it really doesn't make sense to have so little employees for the 2nd floor.
In the end, the whole experience was somewhat disappointing & I doubt I would go back. The prices are just too high for the level of quality & service.
The food…awful. I had a linguini dish & my wife had duck. I've had better sauce out of a jar than what I was served. My wife couldn't eat the duck as it was almost entirely fat & gristle. It was supposed to come with a raspberry sauce, but was basically smothered with Dijon. The salad was more like a soup with all the dressing the put in it.
The atmosphere…it felt more like an all you can eat buffet than fine dining. It's lit up like a grocery store & it was so loud that it made conversation almost impossible.
The staff… most looked like they'd rather be walking on hot coals than here. We were lucky that our waitress was pleasant & the busboy was actually quite attentive & friendly.
The bill…the food, service & atmosphere was definitely not with the price we paid. For two meals & an appetizer, almost $200 with tip.
Overall, I've had worse, but I definitely won't be coming here again
The waiters were super good & nice,, only thing, when a restaurant with that much capacity has a owner or manager to cheap to pay staff agencies to make sure they have enough staff,, its ridiculous,, better to have 2 cooks & 2 servers from an staff agency to help out than run out of staff to end up a disaster like last night. You wanna run a restaurant this size for a long time without losing clients years after years,, stop beeing cheap on staff… it showed in the food & in the service to much.. it became a runing gag at the end & we ended up laughing about it, thanks to the nice staff that was there to try & save the mess that their owners put them into in the first place.. so much potential,, use it!
On 2025-11-08, my girlfriend & I decided to have supper at l'academie in Laval. It had been years since I had been there. We haven't been there in many years & upon our arrival we noticed the atmosphere & decor of the restaurant had changed. It looked like a fine dining restaurant. We were greeted immediately & waited max 2 minutes for our table. Our waiter was very knowledgeable & professional, his name was Harry & I encourage anyone to ask for him if dinning there. We started off with an entree of mussels in white wine sauce, there were so good that we asked for bread to dip inside the sauce because it was that delicious. For the main meal we had the sharing plate for 2 that had: 8 lamb chops, 2 lobster tails, 4-6 giant grilled shrimps, roasted potatoes & grilled vegetables. We've had this type of sharing plate at restaurants like'rib & reef & 40West' & it was better at l'academie, also at a fraction of the price. It also came with a salad each & coffee at the end. Our waiter suggested that plate & thank god we listened to him, because it didn't disappoint at all. The plate was so big that we took some of it home. We had no more room for dessert & our waiter brought us a piece of key lime pie to take home. Also, the best part it's a bring your own wine restaurant. No need to say we will definitely bring going back.
Beautiful restaurant, but a few things were disappointing. When we arrived, the manager was sitting at the entrance on his phone - & he remained there on his cell for the entire evening. The atmosphere felt flat, with no real ambience. Portions were quite small, & surprisingly, the place wasn't busy at all for a Friday night.
I ❤? this place, always staff are nice, friendly & professional, you can bring your own 🍷
Went here with family for dinner … We ordered pasta plates in which were very dissapointing! The plates arrived not even half full of pasta! For a 30$ plate of pasta , the least thats expected is a decent portion! Very dissapointing!
