We went to L'Académie on January 29, 2026 for a birthday with 10 people, 8 adults & 2 kids. What should have been a joyful celebration turned into a four-hour ordeal where most of us left barely eating anything.
Parking was easy, & at first glance, the restaurant looked clean & quiet. We were seated quickly, the menu is expensive, & the waiter was friendly, answering our questions & explaining the specials. Most of us ordered from the menu; I chose the special. The kids ordered spaghetti & chicken.
We arrived at 5:30 PM.
At 7:30 PM, two hours later was when I finally received my Caesar salad. The lettuce was ok & the dressing fine, but more than half of the leaves had turned rusty red. I had to remove most of it & ended up leaving the majority untouched.
The kids got their meals shortly afterward. The rest of us were finally brought our entrees around 8:00 PM.
Our table had ragu pasta, black olive pasta, medallions with pasta, & cheese gnocchi.
My ragu pasta was so salty it was almost inedible. I even asked others to taste it. The ocean was sweeter.
The gnocchi was like a soup, the medallions were tough & salty, & the pasta sauce was acidic.
The kids' chicken was dry she barely ate her favorite meat, & his spaghetti sauce was also acidic, that a little later the waiter offered him a pizza instead.
I called the waiter over & asked him to taste it my dish. He said he would get me another plate. The owner came & explained the sauce had been made earlier but'shouldn't be salty' & also offered a replacement.
When the new plate arrived, it was identically salty. I took one bite & left it. Completely inedible.
The waiter was polite, but we had waited two hours in a mostly empty restaurant only to get food we couldn't eat. Almost no one at our table finished their meal, including the kids. Other tables were leaving plates unfinished too.
The owner came back again, repeating that the sauce had been made earlier & trying to convince us it was normal. My mother then also pointed out that her black olive pasta had only TWO kalamata olives in the entire dish & mostly mushroom & eggplant.
Finally, we had the birthday cake at 9:00 PM. By then, most of us including the kids had barely eaten. A few people resorted to plain pasta & bread just to have something. BTW the cake was good & the coffee the waiter made was also very good.
We paid the full bill, more than the cost of a trip to Cuba for all of us & yet, after four hours, we ate almost nothing.
The only positive: our waiter was incredibly friendly & patient.
What should have been a happy birthday dinner became one of the most disappointing, frustrating, & inedible experiences we've ever had. We will never return.
The food…awful. I had a linguini dish & my wife had duck. I've had better sauce out of a jar than what I was served. My wife couldn't eat the duck as it was almost entirely fat & gristle. It was supposed to come with a raspberry sauce, but was basically smothered with Dijon. The salad was more like a soup with all the dressing the put in it.
The atmosphere…it felt more like an all you can eat buffet than fine dining. It's lit up like a grocery store & it was so loud that it made conversation almost impossible.
The staff… most looked like they'd rather be walking on hot coals than here. We were lucky that our waitress was pleasant & the busboy was actually quite attentive & friendly.
The bill…the food, service & atmosphere was definitely not with the price we paid. For two meals & an appetizer, almost $200 with tip.
Overall, I've had worse, but I definitely won't be coming here again
On 2025-11-08, my girlfriend & I decided to have supper at l'academie in Laval. It had been years since I had been there. We haven't been there in many years & upon our arrival we noticed the atmosphere & decor of the restaurant had changed. It looked like a fine dining restaurant. We were greeted immediately & waited max 2 minutes for our table. Our waiter was very knowledgeable & professional, his name was Harry & I encourage anyone to ask for him if dinning there. We started off with an entree of mussels in white wine sauce, there were so good that we asked for bread to dip inside the sauce because it was that delicious. For the main meal we had the sharing plate for 2 that had: 8 lamb chops, 2 lobster tails, 4-6 giant grilled shrimps, roasted potatoes & grilled vegetables. We've had this type of sharing plate at restaurants like'rib & reef & 40West' & it was better at l'academie, also at a fraction of the price. It also came with a salad each & coffee at the end. Our waiter suggested that plate & thank god we listened to him, because it didn't disappoint at all. The plate was so big that we took some of it home. We had no more room for dessert & our waiter brought us a piece of key lime pie to take home. Also, the best part it's a bring your own wine restaurant. No need to say we will definitely bring going back.
We went there because we had a gift card- & in the end, were happy we didn't have to put out very much money for this meal. Our waiter was very friendly, even though we received our salads before we got cutlery or napkins. Both salads had way too much dressing & the arugula salad for $21 was overpriced, consisting of a few shards of Parmesan, one or two grape tomatoes & some arugula. The price point was a mystery to us. I ordered the salmon tartare which came with fries. The fries were delicious. Unfortunately, the salmon tartare was mushy & didn't taste like salmon at all. There was as much avocado as there was tiny bits of very light pink salmon. It looked more like pâté, & the flavour was not very appetizing. The waiter, seeing my unfinished plate, inquired about the meal & wanted to know what I didn't like; he did offer to exchange it for me, but by then we were already ready to pay our bill. My husband had the veal with wild mushrooms, which he ate, but declared not to be restaurant- quality. Unfortunately, we will not be returning to this restaurant. years ago, we had been to the restaurant located in Pointe- Claire & had a similarly disappointing experience -it has since closed.
