Review Summary

Dunn's Famous is widely regarded as a staple for traditional deli food in Montreal, particularly known for its generous smoked meat sandwiches, flavorful coleslaw, and famous pickles. While many patrons praise the speedy service, consistent quality, and late-night accessibility, experiences can be inconsistent, with some guests noting issues regarding portion sizes, pricing, and the texture of the meat or fries. The atmosphere is generally described as classic and family-friendly, though occasional service lapses and peak-hour noise are mentioned. Overall, the restaurant remains a popular choice for those craving authentic deli staples and classic desserts like cheesecake, despite varying opinions on value and specific dish preparation.

Great service tonight! My waitress Cassandra was so accommodating. She was there whenever i needed, & she kept checking up on us every so often. Very kind & helpful. I saw the comments before, & i got a bit scared when i heard cassandra was the one serving us. In the end, she managed to change my mind! Thank you for the service! I will be coming back for sure!

I have nothing bad to say about the food. This review is only about how we were treated.
We live 5 minutes away. We were rushing home to watch the game when my youngest, 4 years old, suddenly needed a bathroom. The way 4 year olds do, no warning, no negotiating. I spotted the restaurant, stepped in & asked politely. The look I got said more than any words could.
On our way out he noticed the TV. Game 7 was just starting. His eyes lit up. We'd been walking past crowds of people in red jerseys & he kept asking why everyone was dressed the same. I'm a fan. He's still 4, hockey is still new to him. So I crouched down & started explaining. That's our team. These are the playoffs. Whoever wins tonight moves on. He was locked in, pointing at the screen, asking questions. It was one of those two minute moments with a small kid you just don't want to cut short.
A server came over to ask for our order. I said one moment, we're just leaving. Before I could finish, a staff member named Cassandra told me this wasn't a public place for watching TV. I said I understood, just one more minute. She repeated it: order something or leave. I asked for a glass of water. Her answer was no. Water is free, doesn't count. You need to order something paid or you need to go.
5 minutes. Maybe 3 tables occupied. Two quiet kids.
We left.
Tonight Montreal won Game 7. The city lost its mind. People crying in the streets, hugging strangers, horns going everywhere. My 4 year old saw all of it.
But he almost understood what he was seeing. He was about 3 more minutes of explanation away from having that moment where hockey becomes something real for the first time.
Cassandra made sure that didn't happen.
There's a difference between running a business & just being a decent human being. Tonight you lost both a customer & a moment that can't be given back.
Montréal mérite mieux.

The mac & cheese I got was good but a bit watery as they didn't strain the water properly after boiling it. The service was great

Overpriced, but consistent. Better to buy the jar of pickles than to order extra.

Grabbed some take out as the hotel next door. We had the Soup, mac & cheese, poutine, & small sandwich (6oz) combo. The sandwich was ok, i would not order again, tasted ok, had to add more mustard, the bread was soggy, not sure if it's the location as others said the original location is the go to. Mac & cheese is amazing, the meat was chopped up & looked almost like a bacon crumble it was great & would def get it again. The soup was ok, barely warm, better with some pepper & a pinch of salt. The poutine wasn't that great, the famous pickle & coleslaw (tastes like its made with a B&B pickle brine) were excellent. The regular fries were good. I read the cheesecake is good but we didn't order it this visit.

Best smoked meat in Montreal, in my opinion.
Smoked meat wasn't salty, just enough fat for flavour, served hot & very quick.
Fries were very tasty as well.
Definitely a must to do in Montreal.

I went for a very depressing but necessary chore & was very well received. It gave me a moment of respite & the reason to use their washroom...which was only available to paying customers.

Cassandra is an amazing waitress. She is kind, gives excellent service & makes the dining experience worth it. Dunns is open until 2am with flexible hours & the service is great. Cassandra remembered the same meal I ordered the previous time I went there & she is very fast & clears everything & makes sure everything is okay. She is genuine & helps to give Dunns a great reputation. I am taking time out of my work day tomorrow to call the manager to tell him/her about her excellent service. Bon Appétit!
