i order semi-frequently & when it's good, it's really good. i like the quality of the fish & the nigiri doesn't have too much rice. that being said, i ordered a chirashi one time that seemed like nothing more than scraps, & i ordered tonight & the rice was wildly underseasoned, which is completely unacceptable in my opinion. the hosomaki was also badly made tonight, it was mostly rice, when it usually has a good ratio.

Yen Cuisine Japonaise is a reliable downtown spot that sits between casual sushi joint & mid-range dining. The food is consistently solid-fresh fish, well-presented plates, & a menu that blends traditional Japanese dishes with slightly more modern, fusion-style options.

The atmosphere is warm & intimate, making it a good choice for a relaxed dinner or date, though it can get a bit noisy at peak hours. Service is generally friendly & efficient, but not always perfectly consistent.

Bottom line:
A dependable, well-executed Japanese restaurant with good quality & ambiance-worth it for a casual dinner downtown, even if it's not at the top tier of Montreal's sushi scene.

Cute spot, the food is delicious & honestly affordable for that level of quality! Servers were super sweet :) I recommend!

I was a regular customer for almost 4 years. I've seen the quality of the restaurant deteriorate severely over that period. The service is now a lot worse (today I came in after ordering online 40min prior & the food was nowhere near ready), the quality of the food is simply not as good, & the portions have become ridiculous for the price.

I am disappointed because this was my go-to sushi place for a long time, & I will find a new one after today.

We ordered quite a bit of food to share! Most of them were good.
Tempura was a bit over battered & the food was absolutely tasty!

The staff was good.
Ambience was good
Price was a bit pricey but the quality was good !

Cons :
Toilet can be cleaner than this , it's smell like pee everywhere.

There is annoying a few fruit flies while we were eating there.

Nice Japanese traditional restaurant. It is difficult to choose the favorite food when there is no idea about the proposed menu. Menu contains High quality basic ingredients

Awful quality sushi rice + mediocre quality fish cuts = very underwhelming
The tempura that we ordered was not even crispy (beside the shrimp, which makes us wonder if the shrimp was semi-precooked unlike the other vegetables, you can clearly see that the batter used are different)
The platting may seem nice but would not recommend.

I recently visited a Yen cuisine restaurant, & it was an absolute delight! The food was incredibly delicious, & you could really taste the authenticity in every dish. Everything was fresh & perfectly prepared. The restaurant itself has a cozy, intimate atmosphere, making it feel like a hidden gem tucked away from the hustle & bustle. It's the kind of place you'd want to keep to yourself, but definitely worth sharing with friends & family. If you're looking for real, high-quality Japanese food in a charming setting, this is the spot!

I brought my family here for my mom's birthday & we had an amazing time. We ordered a variety of salmon, unagi, & torched hamachi sushi rolls, along with a bowl of gyudon. The first thing I noticed - they're very generous with their portions. You really get your money's worth. Second, the staff made us feel like a priority; they tended to our every need (& promptly) despite the restaurant being pretty busy. Third, the service worked very quickly! We were served within 15 minutes of ordering, & the waitress who took care of us frequently cleared the table & came by to check up on us. Lastly, the atmosphere was super calming, yet there was a nice buzz you could feel through Yen. There was always mellow chatter surrounding you, it was cozy & warm. :) My mom thoroughly enjoyed herself… & she's usually a harsh critic! She said she'd bring her work friends here the next time for a lunch or dinner date, & she barely eats out. It was so refreshing to see her so happy. Come here for QUALITY food, great service, & a happy time! :DDDD

Probably one of the best Japanese cuisine you can have. Hot soba & their tartare were delicious! Meal size/quality definitely is worth the price ! The price is actually very reasonable.

Excellent japanese food, with many choices of great quality. I went on a date with my boyfriend. On my reservation, I asked for a nice table, which they provided! We ordered tempura & maki as appetizers, then individually soba & donburi, & a glass of plum wine. Everything was delicious! The staff were nice, the restaurant itself really gave off a japanese feel. I would definitely recommend it!

Yen, was in the past one of my favorite Japanese restaurants. I have found in my last several visits that the quality of the food offering has diminished!

I visited Yen with my friends tonight ☺️☺️☺️& yeas I want to say, I was thoroughly impressed. Every aspect, from the quality & taste of the dishes to the presentation & decor, was delightful. The ambiance of the restaurant perfectly complements its style, which is both chic & sophisticated, typical of a Japanese izakaya. If I were to recommend a Japanese restaurant, Yen would undoubtedly be my top choice. It seems I'm not alone in my opinion, as the restaurant was completely full. 🤓

I recently dined at Yen, & while my experience had its highlights, there were a few aspects that fell short of expectations. First & foremost, the food was fantastic. Each dish was meticulously prepared & bursting with flavor. From the fresh sushi to the sashimi, every bite was a testament to the chef's skill & dedication. The quality of the food alone would make me consider returning. The service was also commendable. The staff were attentive & courteous, going out of their way to help me figure out how to pay the parking fees-a gesture I greatly appreciated. Their willingness to assist with such a mundane task speaks volumes about their commitment to customer satisfaction. However, the environment left something to be desired. The noise level was quite high, largely due to the chatter from other patrons. This bustling atmosphere starkly contrasts with the serene & tranquil vibe typically associated with traditional Japanese restaurants. If you're looking for a quiet, intimate dining experience, this might not be the place for you. Another drawback was the behavior of one of the waiters. They seemed overly eager to clear the bill for the next table, which came across as somewhat pushy & detracted from the otherwise pleasant service. It wasn't a major issue, but it did leave a bit of a sour note on the overall experience. In summary, while Yen excels in food quality & generally good service, the noisy environment & the occasional pushiness of the staff might be off-putting for some. If you don't mind a lively atmosphere & are there primarily for the excellent food, it's still worth a visit.

The first place I recommend to everyone visiting or hungry in Montreal! Amazing staff, warm ambience & delicious food! Such good prices for incredible high-quality & generous dishes!

yen has been my favourite restaurant for so long for their quality. but this last visit left me kind of disappointed... my partner & i both love their foie gras & uni dons & have been ordering the same things for so long. i feel like this time, the uni portion was not represented accurately in the picture, nor was the foie gras. & the biggest let down was that the rice seemed very old & hard... almost microwaved day old rice? on a more positive note, we did enjoy the tako wasabi we ordered to share as well as the service!

Update: never coming back. This place went south. Seems like new management who doesn't care about the business. I got a stomach ache right after eating the tuna. Food USED to be so fresh & delicious. Proportion USED to be just right. So not only did they downsize, they're also giving you low quality food. Better take your money somewhere else. I went in April 2025 & noticed some difference. Came back in June, & it's just even worse. Old review: Went with friends & the food was fantasic 😍 We had the gyudon, niji chirashi, kaisen cappacio, salmon soba, foie gras salad, & some rolls but I forgot the name lol. Overall good!

One thing is certain, in this restaurant you get a good quality-price. The bowls are still generous too in portions but if you eat a lot you may need an appetizer. I wouldn't say it's the best sushi I ate. The rice lacked flavor, the fishes are all the cheapest cuts, etc. However, for the price I paid, this is very good. In Montreal, I'm happy about this find. I really enjoyed the ambiance too & the service was good. Overall, a good ratio for quality & price. With slightly more generous portions.
