I had a bad time, the food takes forever to be served!! & some dishes lacked flavor. The restaurant didnt even have that much clients in the dining room & i understand why now. However the decoration was still good.
Thank you to the chef(s) & service staff for an absolutely perfect dining experience. I loved the cozy atmosphere & I am sure that I speak for all of us when I say.....we'll be back!
Nous étions installés sur la terasse par une soirée oèu le resto n'étiat pas très occupé. La personne qui nous accueillait était chaleureuse. La carte inscrite sur un tableau est attrayante toutefois, quand les plats arrivèrent, les 4 avons été décus dès la 1èere bouchée.
Les prix sont toutefois assez élevés pour des plats qui semblaient avoir été réchauffés au micro-onde. Les fruits de mer trop cuits, donc caoutchouteux, ont eu raison de me faire éviter le dessert. Les pates étaient aussi trop cuites & la sauce manquait d'épices. L'emplacement est pourtant bien.
Bref, nous n'y retournerons pas. Je souhaite que les cuisines s'améliorent.
Quelle déception !
On partait des commentaires positif & nombreux sur Restomontréal pour l'essayer. Arrivés sur les lieux, l'ambiance était plutôt chaleureuse & conviviale. La salle est petite & déjà pleine. Le menu nous offre un choix très limités & les prix sont tout de même assez élevés pour la simplicité des plats & des produits présentés.On commande en entrée la soupe du jour (aux poireaux), le foie gras, & en plat le saumon avec sa croûte de pacanes, le médaillon de bison aux baies sauvages & la côte de boeuf. On fut réellement déçue par la qualité des plats, de l'assaisonnement trop poivré de la soupe à la cuisson du qui était fade caoutchouteux qui ressemblait plus à du contre-filet qu'une côte de boeuf servi sans l'os. Le bison était gorgé d'eau, trop cuit comme si qu'il avait été cuit au bouillon plutôt que s'il avait été saisi ou grillé. Le saumon était trop cuit également. Bref ! chacun des convives avait été déçus. Nous avons quand même passé une agréable soirée, mais nous n'y retournerons pas. L'Alex H est de ces restaurants prétentieux qui ne sont pas à la hauteur des plats simples qu'il proposent. Le genre d'où l'on ressort avec une sensation de s'être fait duper. Je ne le recommande pas.
Food is good. Service sometimes is not good. Outside terrace is really nice. A place to go.
Called aheead to check if they would be open on Monday night. Made reservations. Got there & they were closed. Not impressed.
Alex H Restaurant has been my favorite little place in NDG area.
They seem to only use the fresh ingredients Chef Alex picks each day, so there's no fixed dishes, & they write what they can serve you on the blackboard every day, just like a traditional Bistro!
The ambiance is great, & the service is very welcoming & attentive.
Only downside is (though I like that about this place) that the food takes longer to arrive when the place is a little crowded (like on Friday evening).
So be aware of that, bring your favorite bottle, & enjoy it while waiting for the delicious meal.
I bring my children & they are always welcomed there. (Note: they have a booster seat, but didn't have a high chair when I last went in 11/10).
They'd accommodate you with children's menu as well.
I'd recommend their Magret de canard, & they usually have it on the menu of the day.
Nous étions un groupe de 9 personnes & le restaurant était presque vide quand nous sommes arrivées. Mais il s'est rapidement rempli. Nous étions toutes déçues par le menu qui est inscrit au tableau. ll n'y avait pas un choix énorme (peut-être 6 plats au total) & les plus intéressant étaient plutôt dispendieux (25+$). Plusieurs d'entre nous avons opté pour l'option moins dispendieuse soit le duo de pasta (manicotti au fromage & penne). C'était le pire plat que j'ai mangé dans un resto! Les penne avait l'air d'avoir été arrosés d'une sauce campbell en conserve avec beaucoup d'eau rajoutée. Le manicotti était de loin supérieur, mais n'oublions pas que les penne étaient horribles, mais la pâte utilisée pour le faire était plutôt sèche. D'autres ont opté pour le saumon qui avait l'air très bon (enrobé de pacanes) mais qui était trop cuit par moment & pas très frais. Le porc était sec. La seule bonne assiette était le canard.
Suivi du dessert. Moi étant une grande fan de crème brulée avait hâte d'en commander une. Mais avant de le faire j'ai demandé à la serveuse son opinion sur la dite crème brulée "elle est très bonne" me répond-elle. Je lui ai ensuite demandé son opinion sur les pâtes "j'adore les penne" me dit-elle. Voila, pas de crème brulée pour moi! & j'ai bien fait parce qu'elle ne goutait rien (sauf pour la partie brulée).
La serveuse était très gentille & a même offert le dessert à une de nous parce qu'on fêtait son anniversaire. Mais le service est plutôt lent (ce qui peut être compréhensible vu la largeur de notre groupe & le fait que le resto était plein).
Je ne recommande pas ce resto & n'y retournerais jamais.
Average food in an average atmosphere. I had high expectations but was disappointed. The Montreal restaurant scene has better to offer.
Not a horrible restaurant by any means, just, ordinary.
Fabulous!! Everything about it was wonderful. The service was about the best one could hope for as was the dinner. I recommend this above most other Montreal restaurants. Bring your own wine & your friends. What a treasure.
BYOB in NDG which is great & one of the reasons that I had chosen this place. Restaurant is a nice quaint size & you don't feel like you're jammed in sitting next to another table. Food was good, I had the Filet de Porc as the main course & the portions were a good size. Not too little, not too much.
There are a couple of caveats though. Service was slow & I had seen that in a few reviews on this site & was prepared for that. For a small restaurant I would figure the food service to be a bit quicker. I do not mean rushing us but somewhere in between so as we are not left wondering what happened to our order.
The other caveat is the noise. Although that could be just that night, the noise level was so loud we were almost shouting to be heard across the table at some points. I would not recommend this place for a romantic evening for two if you have to shout across the table to be heard.
I would recommend this place for group encounters.
I doubt that we will go back but it was certainly good food.
I've been to Alex H for many, many years & it's still my favorite. The food is just simply delicious, & the service is impeccable. Alex & Noel are just fabulous hosts, always ready to please & very honest, hard working people. You just feel at home when you dine in this little restaurant. & the decor is nice too!
A few friends of mine decided to try this restauarant in our neighbourhood since it was bring your own wine & within walking distance. The decor was modern & simple with black & white photos & white linens. The food was exceptional. The waitress recommended the bison & scallop dishes, which a few of us chose, as well one friend ordered the fish of the day. We all couldn;t believe the flavour in the sauces with our meals. It was very nice to have food to compliment our wine selection so well. The creme brule was also very nice. The staff were pleasant & accomodating. I will definately return here for a nice evening out with friends!
The restaurant seemed quaint & popular, so we decided to give it a try.
We were promptly seated & soups arrived soon after. Almost an hour & a half later, still no main course in sight.. or anything coming out of the kitchen for that matter. Waiters completely ignored us the whole time: no updates, explanations, water or even a bread refill to hold us over.
Put down a twenty on the table for the soups & the bread: we left hungry, mad & disappointed.
No matter how good the food *might* be, nothing warrants bad service & unreasonable waiting time for the food.
If you are looking for something a little different bring your own wine & settle in for a cozy meal. Good menu, great sauces, & seafood is very good. My favorite, & I think one of their specialties, is the duck. Prices are reasonable for the quality of the food. I come here occasionally for a nice, relaxing supper out.

Overall good experience. Nicely prepared dishes coupled with a nice ambiance made the evening memorable. I recommend this place for a romantic dinner.
A small, family-run, bring your own wine restaurant in NDG. While the ambience or service isn't anything to write home about, the food coming from the kitchen is flavourful & perfectly cooked. The chef makes delicious sauces as well. I've been there three times, I've had Chicken, Veal & Fish dishes, & each one has been very good. Stuffed chicken breast is exceptional. Cream of carrot soup is superb. Salad definetely could use some work though.
I've only been there for lunches, can't comment on the dinner service.
